Place OC and AOP on Sundays at 8pm Place GU and ROE on Wednesdays at 8pm Launch a new comedy at 8:30 on Mondays.
I will never understand the reasoning that putting comedies on Sundays at 8:00 p.m. will magically transform CBS's mediocre performance into something successful.
"Rules of Engagement" is the only comedy that I know of that CBS has in reserve. It is likely too far into the season to get a comedy in the pipeline ready for midseason.
A more plausible scenario is that one of the Wednesday comedies or "Accidentally on Purpose" will go on hiatus to keep from airing reruns, allowing "Engagement" to fill in for the benched comedy.
Comedies on Sundays at 8:00 p.m. is a pipe dream, at least for this season, and maybe beyond.
I believe this was a season high for the CBS comedies last night. This was especially good news for Gary Unmarried, which was up a million viewers and .4 in the demo from last week. I think this is a good sign for Old Christine - airing against Modern Family repeats, which IMO is a show that will not repeat very well, will be very beneficial. ABC just needs to hope that the comedy audience returns to The Middle next week, and not Gary Unmarried.
And for anyone who says Old Christine is a better show than Gary Unmarried is insane - Julia Louis-Dreyfus, after 5 years, is still amazingly funny in every single episode. Her delivery is something you just don't see from sitcom actresses nowadays. Jay Mohr, meanwhile, has one of the worst comedic timings on television. His delivery of lines is just not good, which is the main thing that continues to turn me off from the show.
Meanwhile, after being off the air for 3 weeks, Glee came back to solid numbers. The demo is good, the total viewers is very respectable, and continues to produce high-quality episodes every week. CSI:NY was also up bigtime this week, especially in the demo - seems like the cross-over is working its magic afterall.

This is a totally artificial bump for the CBS sitcoms. It reminds of the bump AOP got three Mondays in a row when House was out of the time slot, only to coming crashing down last week. As soon as ABC starts running their sitcoms again Christine and Gary go down again. These two shows are really down from last year's already low numbers.
Just my opinion but, I like Gary much more than Christine. I loved Julia in Seinfeld, but Christine is just not a funny show. Gary at least holds my interest.
Good job for Gary Unmarried! That is only the 7th time it has done a 2.4 demo or better. Definetly a season hgih IIRC.

I think she's saying Julia is great, Old Christine is not, and Joy Mohr sucks, but Gary Unmarried doesn't?

Have we really lowered our expectations that low that we are praising 2.4 demos ? Let's be honest, these two sitcoms are so unlike any CBS sitcoms seen before. Their numbers are so low it is just not like any other CBS shows. I'll make a bet next week when The Middle returns Gary drops about .2 in the demo.

I don't want to put words in people mouths, but I think the names of the two sitcoms got reversed.
What Julie most likely meant to say is that "...anyone who says Gary Unmarried is a better show than Old Christine is insane..." due to her praise of "Christine" star Julia Louis-Dreyfus and jeering of "Gary" star Jay Mohr.
Last night was the first episode of "Gary" that I've watched this season. I wasn't really a fan of the revamp that transformed Gary into a wanna-be radio personality, but last night's episode didn't spend anytime in the radio station and was more comparable to the first season episodes.
ITA.....these numbers are very similar to the Friday dramas. Nothing to celebrate at all. If these are indeed season highs, that reinforces the fact that celebrating these numbers is totally out of order.

This sums up my main gripe about those who advocate moving sitcoms to Sundays at 8:00 p.m.
"The Amazing Race" has attracted more than 10 million viewers for all but one of its episodes this season. I don't think any comedy series - with the exception of "Two and a Half Men" and "The Big Bang Theory" - attract more viewers than that on a regular basis.
By replacing "Race" with any comedy other than the two I mentioned would see CBS going the wrong direction on Sundays: backwards.

Yes, that's exactly what I meant to say. Amazing how a simple mistake can throw so many people off, lol.
But back to the numbers, if you think about it, Old Christine was only averaging 7.5 million viewers or so when it was airing back on Mondays at 8:30 a few years ago. Many years have passed, and now its airing on Wednesdays, and its still pulling in the 7 million range (with a lower demo, however). So, you can't exactly say Old Christine is off from what it was doing. Gary Unmarried . . . you can only compare it to last season's numbers. Although last night's numbers were very close to some of its numbers from last season, the entire hour remains down considerably from last year.
Like I said before, I think with Hank gone, we could see Christine pull in these numbers regularly from now on. I bet the audience will return to The Middle next week, though, which will hurt Gary.
ABC: 8:00pm CMA Awards: 15.87 million viewers, 5.0 A 18-49
CBS: 8:00pm The New Adventures of Old Christine: 6.88, 2.0 8:30pm Gary Unmarried: 6.71, 2.1 9:00pm Criminal Minds: 14.80, 3.8 10:00pm CSI: NY: 11.62, 3.0

First time this season its over 7 million viewers, and the first time this season it hit a 2.4 demo. Also, I was mistaken, this is only the 6th time it has done a 2.4 demo. That doesn't include the repeats with a 2.9 and 2.8 demo behind Two and a Half Men. In my mind, the numbers are a reason to be happy. Look at the Wednesday 8pm hour, and everything is pretty low. Sure CBS could do better, but why change it when Gary Unmarried hit a season high?
Justin, thanks for posting the ratings history! I love looking back to 2003 to see the ratings!

Given this time slot and the way TV has fallen, its not totally out of the picture to say a 2.4 is an alright number. Its not great by any means though, especially on CBS. If it were ABC, I'd say good, given their comedy history as of late. Ditto for Fox. For NBC it would be a monster hit lol.
