But really if you look back at Fox's now almost 30yrs on the air (pretty sure Fox came into existence in the 80s), 90210 and Melrose Place were two of the defining shows for the network. It exploded into pop culture phenomenon and with it bringing the attention Fox needed to break out of that unknown territory The CW, The WB (later yrs), and UPN have/had fallen into. Before House or Idol, you could not read anything on the network itself without a tiny mention of 90210 or Melrose in someway.

You're right. Thanks for putting that into a better context than I did.

RE: 90210 on DVD, a big part of the delay was music rights. They have changed almost all the music in the first three seasons. The same music rights struggle that is keeping Ally McBeal from being released on DVD.

Ally McBeal: the complete series has been released on DVD in Australia and I don't think it's one of those Chinese bootlegs. I'm not sure about the music. I know that Dawson's Creek got destroyed by music fees. They had to cut out scenes and they even lost their signature Paula Cole "I Don't Wanna Wait" theme song!

With this focus, Reaper is really a long shot now. I would have asked what they were on to greenlight Styledome but sadly that question wasn't asked. Comedy toward young women? What? Again, men like comedy too. Why cut out half of your audience?

Is she SEXIST or something, coz I watch The CW too. And I don't watch GG, OTH, and The CW's 100% female shows. I watch SMALLVILLE and SMACKDOWN! and an episode or 2 of REAPER.

She's sort of DISCRIMINATING men from TV.

Are you sure Smallville is a guy show?

What makes you think Dawn Ostroff is really the person that made 18-34 female the target demo? CW is half owned by CBS. CBS skews old and male so maybe they wanted CW to be as non-competing, just complimenting as possible?

Its defintely helps that Ostroff has Les Moonves in her corner.

But at what point is he going to admit the network needs a change...

Eh, he already knows it won't work long term. So he's probably just letting her have some fun. At ABC they call this chimpin around. Wink

My point above was that the CW's target demo was decided upon by CBS/Moonves, not Dawn Ostroff.

I don't understand why the CW was so determined to kill the ratings golden goose Reba. Reba pretty much kept the entire WB Friday comedy block alive and it shot life back into 7th Heaven after it was exiled to Sundays. Reba was setting record time period highs and they canceled it because what large portions of the shows fans were over 35 or under 18 and the shows star character was *gasp* over 22. I think that possibly a Reba-Veronica Mars Sunday could have done the CW very well. Veronica brings the younger more desired viewers and Reba brings in the ratings. Even Summer repeats of Reba and Veronica did better than the CW's new shows. The CW is just shooting itself in the foot saying they only want female viewers of a certain age. A 43 year old viewer's money is just as green as a 25 year old's. Weren't Golden Girls, Designing Women, Murder She Wrote, and Diagnosis Murder all big hit shows?

Why don't you understand? Reba had a guaranteed contract (because the people that ran WB made a poor decision) that paid her far more than her show was worth. So, as soon as the network was no longer forced to air the show, they stopped doing so.

Apparently contract negotiations are something the CW doesn't get involved in, because they could've used another half season of Reba this year to help the other comedies out a bit.

That's the problem. I think even Dawn would expand a bit if she was allowed to. I still think the WB folks would've done a better job with what was available.

I liked Reba and the ratings (#1 comedy and like 4th of 5th over all) were there for renewal compared to what else got picked up. I THINK that Reba's unprompted repeats after being off the air for months ended up being the CW's top rated program that summer--a major slap in the face. Plus, Reba was syndicated on the CW daytime and on Lifetime. So, I don't see the logic how it was poor decision on the part of the Warner Brothers.

I totally agree. The WB had a MUCH better track record at developing original shows and having them run longer and sell better on DVD.

The CW needs to get its act together next season and judging by the pilots they're moving forward with, I don't think they'll have a fall 2009 upfront.

Warner Bros. signed her to a guaranteed contract that paid her more than the show could generate in revenue. bad contract. Worse yet, the contract forced Warner Bros. to keep paying her even if they cancelled the show, so CW was forced to take another year of Reba under their wing at a loss as well. Bad contract.

What sort of 'judgement' are you using to determine that a ensemble cast medical show won't work or that a 90210 spinoff won't work?
