For the second time since April, The CW has scheduled a news special set to air in the daytime schedule.

"America's Invisible Children: The Homeless Educational Crisis in America" is skedded for Monday October 8th at 3-4:00 pm, pre-empting All of Us and What I Like About You that day.

The CW last skedded a news special during daytime back on Good Friday, April 6, 2007 titled "Life Below the Line: The World Poverty Crisis" which was hosted by Bryant Gumbel. I still remember how powerful this first news special was paralleling the poverty crisis in America to that of developing countries. I don't recall seeing ratings for that first special, but I'm sure The CW is airing these specials as part of a noble sense of civic duty, and for that they are to be commended.

Maybe they should consider airing this show on a Sunday night at 7PM (in place of CW Now and Online Nation) or Sunday at 9PM (instead of a repeat of something). I guess this does not fit in to their desired demographic for primetime. Better they air a show that delivers under a million viewers.

I bet its more of meeting the minimum FCC Requirements for community/educational/childrens programming.

Well it can't be kids stuff. The CW has as much if not more kids shows on Saturday than the other nets. I know they have more than CBS and I think they now surpass ABC and Fox too with the added hour due to the dropping of the afternoon kids block.

How come FOX and MyNetworkTV never have to do any community / educational type programming? Did the FCC give them a bye?

I'm not 100% sure on this, but I think the Small nets (FOX, CW, MyTVm etc...) get some exceptions that the other 3 nets don't. Community/Education programming minimums may be one of those exceptions.

Just a reminder that The CW has scheduled their second news documentary, "America's Invisible Children: The Homeless Educational Crisis in America" during The CW Daytime on Monday October 8th at 3-4:00 pm, pre-empting "All of Us" and "What I Like About You".

The ZAPit listing credits Ms. Joan Lunden as host, and describes the episode as follows:
quote:

quote:
"The plight of homeless children in America; singer Jewel, actor Steve Guttenberg, educator Stedman Graham, teachers and social workers offer insight on what can be done about the growing homelessness problem."

The CW has scheduled their third news documentary, "Who's Who of World Giving", which is scheduled for Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, November 22, at 3-4:00 PM replacing "All of Us" and "What I Like About You" on The CW Daytime sked.

The special is hosted by Mr. Bryant Gumbel and it takes a look at charitable giving, with a focus on donations by well known celebrities including Miss Joan Collins.

I am curious as to how the first two CW News specials did in the daytime ratings, so if anyone has the numbers, could you please post:

1. "Life Below the Line: The World Poverty Crisis", Good Friday, April 6, 2007 at 3-4:00 pm (hosted by Bryant Gumbel).

2. "America's Invisible Children: The Homeless Educational Crisis in America" aired Monday October 8, 2007 at 3-4:00 pm (hosted by Ms. Joan Lunden).

Given the holiday, I think this special will do better in the ratings than if they stuck to their normal programming. It still looks like a throw away, though. Why waste the 'news' special on daytime?

With the writer's strike, this show looks like it would be the perfect thing to slot in on Sunday in place of one of those Life is Wild episodes. It couldn't do any worse in the ratings and if it was strategicaly placed to go up against a rerun of EM:HE, it could easily triple Life is Wild's numbers.

this special will be lucky to get 250,000 viewers, nationally.

During the 3pm hour, most will be sitting down giving thanks and eating turkey and ham. A TV special will be the furthest thing from their minds.

Triple? I highly doubt that.

So, you are saying that this special could get about 3.3 million viewers... leading out of CW Now.... correct?

The CW currently only has 4 shows right now that can draw over 3 million viewers (per the last weekly ratings info). I don't think it could perform at the level of say a Supernatural or Smallville. Roll Eyes

Look at the ratings for EM:HE. The audience for that sort of 'feel good drivel' is sitting in front of the TV at that time. If EM:HE was a rerun that week, the CW should be able to pull over some of them with the right advertising push. Even if it only gets twice what Life is Wild gets, why waste it in daytime programming on Thanksgiving (where almost no one will watch it) instead of primetime? With the strike going on, networks shouldn't be 'wasting' a first run episode/special of anything.
