The Big Bang Theory just got a great review from the Couch Potato. 4 1/2 out of 5 stars, and he said it is the best new sitcom he saw. See the review here :
Well, our host Marc Berman had some really nice things to say about this show :
quote:
Surprisingly, I was blown away by the pilot for CBS sitcom The Big Bang Theory because what may sound like a generic bore (two nerdy roommates befriend their hot new neighbor—blah, blah, blah…) was actually a laugh-out-loud riot. The casting (Johnny Galecki, Jim Parsons and Kaley Cuoco) is flawless, the chemistry is surprisingly strong and the potential for long-term storytelling is obvious.
If The Big Bang Theory can build on the lead-in audience from the modest How I Met Your Mother (not a difficult task by any means), CBS could be looking at its first breakout comedy since Two and a Half Men. (Certainly, Men's Jon Cryer is a card-carrying member of nerd nation as well. Remember Duckie?)
Big Bang Theory is hilarious. I think the majority of you who have followed my television tastes, know that I am generally not a big comedy fan. But when you take two nerds and have them living beside a really hot blonde girl, I guess my tastes change (perhaps I identify with the situation or something). I have high hopes for this show. The pilot was very funny and the dialogue was brilliant. It starts off with the two lead characters, Leonard (Johnny Galecki) and Sheldon (Jim Parsons) making donations at a sperm bank. They soon have a change of heart and demand that they get their deposits back. The show only gets funnier as they return home to find a stunning new neighbor, Penny, moving in. It's definitely worth a laugh or two when the pair invite her over to eat and she ends up asking if she can use their shower. We find out that Sheldon measures his social superiority with the number of 'friends' he has on Myspace and that the pair like to party by playing Klingon Boggle until 1:00 a.m. The comedy only gets better when Leonard and Sheldon's actual friends show up. The show is smart and funny and I loved it. It is a significant improvement over the comedies that I saw last year and I think that with the network securing the rights to creator Chuck Lorre's other show (Two And A Half Men and pairing it alongside established hits like Corner Gas and Robson Arms, the Big Bang Theory is that this show is destined for success.
"The Big Bang Theory" Who's in it: Kaley Cuoco, Johnny Galecki, Jim Parsons What it's about: "Beauty and the Geek: The Sitcom," in which two Cal Tech nerds befriend the blonde hottie who moves in across the hall. Pluses: The traditional setup-joke paradigm is on its last legs, but co-creator Chuck Lorre (of "Two and a Half Men" and "Dharma & Greg" fame) is one of the few working sitcom writers who can occasionally breathe a little life into it. I laughed a few times, particularly at the odd line readings of Parsons. Minuses: A major plot point of the pilot: the hot blonde's shower breaks, so she has to shower (and parade around in a towel) in the nerds' apartment. This is an actual plot in a sitcom being made in 2007. In general, the show threatens to make "Two and a Half Men" seem like a model of subtlety.
Show: "Big Bang Theory" (CBS comedy) The Pitch: "Weird Science" if the geeks lived next door to Kelly LeBrock and hadn't actually created her. Quick Response: First off, Kaley Cuoco is no Kelly LeBrock, though she plays the one-note role of curvy-dumb-blonde with all of the subtlety it requires (which is to say none). The biggest problem with the pilot is that creators Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady have written a dumb comedy about smart people rather than a smart comedy about smart people. Every joke is telegraphed and they all have the exact same theme -- nerds can't talk to girls and they drink juice-boxes, but at least they're less pathetic than stupid people. The contempt with which the writers treat Cuoco's character (and anybody with a less-than-genius IQ) verges on offensive, at least compared to the pity and mockery of the nerds. The central device of the pilot -- hot new neighbor's shower is broken, so she has to use the geeks' shower -- is vintage '70s sitcom tripe. Oh and this is yet another CBS Monday comedy with as little diversity as possible. Is there a whiter two-hour block on TV than CBS' Monday comedies? I know she was doing "Football Wives," but tell me this same sitcom with the same premise wouldn't have automatically become better if Gabrielle Union had been cast in the female lead. Desire to Watch Again: Low. And I say that as somebody who watched every episode of "The Class" simply because it was paired with "HIMYM." Yup. CBS cancelled "The Class" and actually found something *worse* to take its place.
Premise of the screener: Leonard (Johnny Galecki) and Sheldon (Jim Parsons) are geeks, to the extreme. The two scientists manage to get through life mostly insulated in their own little academic world, until Penny (Kaley Cuoco) moves in next door. She's a waitress at the Cheesecake Factory coming out of a bad break up, and she turns their world upside down.
Brett says: CBS has had great success with their procedural shows, but their comedy lineup has been fairly hit and miss. Their Monday night comedy lineup has seen some success with Two and a Half Men consistently coming in as the highest rated comedy on TV and How I Met Your Mother garnering much critical praise. The other slots seem to be a revolving door of comedies that never quite fit. Big Bang Theory could be the one to bridge that gap at 8:30. Leonard is very likable and you want to root for him, while Sheldon steals scene after scene as his lack of social skills has him saying anything that pops into his head. The premise is a good one, and offers the opportunity for a lot of laughs if they don't go too far overboard with the geek angle. I don't expect this one to be a break out smash, but it's a good show in the right spot.
You can totally dismiss this guys review. HE wrote that stuff a couple days after the CBS upfront. He is an idiot blogger who I doubt even saw the pilot. He wrote it literally a couple of days after the upfront. I think he has a hatred for Kaley Cuoco so he wrote it. Dismiss that one, but the other two are very valid. Personally, other than that idiot I have not seen a bad review of this show by a valid reviewer yet.

Are you kidding? You really shouldnt be that biased... It's okay for a show to have one or two negative reviews, not everyone's going to like a series. So just because you disagree with it, you cant claim that the reviewer didnt even watch it, when he obviously did. One bad review isnt that big of a deal.

You are absolutely right, but I happend to see this guys review literally two days after the upfront. He reviewed the show and hated it based on the clips. I remember reading it and saying that this show is probably going to be no good, but then all the other reviewers who saw the pilot loved it. This guy was on Kaley Cuoco and comparing the show to Stacked on FOX, and this was two days after the upfront. He has no credibility. I bet he has not seen any more than just clips for most of his reviewed shows. You at least must see the pilot, and not have a pre existing opinion before reviewing any show.

But he did see the pilot. The review came out May 29th, CBS's upfront was May 17 (Almost two weeks apart). The person at the other blog, sepinwall, only reviewed his CBS shows a day or two after, because CBS mailed out their DVD screeners immediately. So you can't say that he didnt see the pilot because the review is negative. He did, and this show has just one negative review now.
