With the new news list to the right, I see that MNTV has it's first BIG event... An Elton John Concert.

Any predicition on what type of ratings it will get?

How did such a nothing network get something this big? Is Elton a closet Wicked Wicked Games fan????

Hey, the CW better start better start searching for contracts for their own real specials as well before MNTV beats them in 8 years the same way UPN ended up beating WB. It's his 60th birthday. I bet it pulls in 3-4 million. It does have the potential to do more, and if it's not promoted well it would probably do less.

Promotion is key. Since MNTV barely registers on people's TV minds, this special has a long way to go. However, I think the special could draw a network high. And as for the comment on UPN beating the WB, didn't the WB beat UPN last year when it was all said and done. I would think 7th Heaven's then series finale along with decent ends for the other programs on the WB would've put it ahead of UPN, which sunk badly in the second half of the year.

This will probably send MNTV soaring over the 1.0 HH level. Big Grin

How much promotion will be done On FOX?
Heck, just one 30 second promo on Idol would give it at least couple million more viewers.

I'll predict that it will beat at least half of the CW programs that week.

I am looking forward to this Elton John 60th Birthday special (the Bowie 50th at MSG was a high point of concert television), and I think it will deliver decent HH (1.5/2%) and A25-54 (1.7+) numbers to MyNetworkTV.

However, it will be the International Fight League series of bouts that will set a ratings high for MNT with its debut on Mondays in early March. I'm predicting SPIKEish numbers, with a HH/%/A18-49 of 1.8/23%/1.1 for its debut. If it's compelling, I think those debut numbers will go into a slow build. The IFL adverts I've seen so far certainly are compelling - they are focussing viewers on the everyday real-life heroes who step into the international fighting arena, in contrast to their more theatrical, it's-all-pretend counterparts of professional wrestling.

It may take time to validate my predictions as MNT ratings are not readily available on a nightly basis.

With 12 new primetime hours of new serials, movie nights, fight nights and specials in the mix, an uptick in MNT numbers is just around the corner.

If MNT manages to double their ratings to the 1.2HH range, from who's column will those viewers come? Easiest to see is FOX losing some of its M18-49 from Mondays and Saturdays. The Tuesday / Wednesday serials numbers will improve marginally, but not cause waves on those nights. The theatrical films on Thursday and Friday will probably pull mostly from CBS in A18-49 and A25-54.

The turnaround begins, with Mr. Meidel steady at the helm.

That's still bad for UPN becuase they only had two regularly scheduled repeats on their schedule a week (Wed. post-Top Model at the end of the year and Tue. 8pm Top Model repeats). WB, on the other hand, had 2 repeats on Sundays and for the majority of the year had a repeat on Wednesday at 9pm. Friday Night's comedies also did very poorly last year, with Reba the only one doing decently. From about the end of October til January, there were What I Like About You reruns at 8:30 on Friday. UPN had a solid lead, only to blow it after the announcement of the new network and the bombing of the horrible South Beach and Get this Party Started.

I don't think MNTV will be pulling audiences away from necessarily anybody, but they will probably get slight upticks from some of these programs. I think they should put the IFC on Tuesday or Wednesday against Idol. It could pull in males 18-34, a demo that Idol doesn't really appeal to, but probably still wins because its the death star. The movies are unlikely to do any better than the soaps. In fact, I'd use a soaps (air them 2 eps a week each instead of 2 hour blocks) on Monday and Tuesday. Then give up Thursday/Friday to the movies for now, or give us some reality programming.
