At the risk of going off the board, here...Has anyone been checking out the reruns of Dick Cavett's old ABC talk show on TCM?
I like what Cavett was doing back in the day. It was...well...it was, for lack of a better word, quiet. Just a good interviewer with a sense of humor talking to somebody for an hour, without a band or a sidekick or a bunch of crazy stuff.
Seems like there's an opening for someone to do that kind of a show today. Someone like....maybe, Dick Cavett? If not him, David Letterman doing a Charlie Rose-type show on PBS on the side, independent of his CBS Late Show.
Don't get me wrong, I love Charlie Rose, but Cavett added the humor and walked the line between Charlie and Letterman, to me anyway.
I love watching the old Dick Cavett shows on TCM. Last week I caught the episode where Dick interviewed Alfred Hitchcock, and it was superb. Being an aspiring broadcast journalist, I look up to Dick Cavett. He ran a classy interview show without the need to denigrate his guests. Bill O'Reilly sure could take a few pointers from Dick Cavett!
In terms of modern hosts, I too like Charlie Rose. He is a likeable host, and his shows are often intriguing. I also watch Larry King occasionally, but I hate it whenever he gets stuck doing tabloid trash. I also think Bob Costas is great.
Being just 20 years-old, all my friends think I'm crazy for watching Dick Cavett. They don't know what they're missing out on. Instead, they watch people like Sean Hannity and Bill O'Reilly. Somehow, their styles have become the new standard (or lack thereof) in broadcasting. God help us.
