I'm amazed at how shows like The Hills got so popular... There is no substance to them at all or any interesting aspect within the people/actors or story lines. There has to be something out there worth watching out of the 1 million poop reality shows out there. Someone enlighten me please.

I watched a few minutes of The Hills one time and I honestly couldn't tell if it was a reality show or a scripted show. All of the dialog seemed very scripted and the camera coverage /style seemed just like an episode of The Office. I agree with you in wondering why anyone watches it.

I totally agree... what happened to the music in MTV? We need more shows about music!

Is the show scripted? Every time I watch I wonder.

the hills make me want to throw up. i agree with the music comment too. there's actually a show though premiering sunday at 8 on the MSG Network called NYC Soundtracks. It's a show in search of the best subway performer. don't think this one is scripted Smiler

NYC Soundtracks was pretty entertaining... definitely NOT the hills!

I'm sure if you have been to NYC then you've seen this lady playing the saw... she's the last one.

Yeah its a pretty show right? I think the saw lady is so good. I see her in the subway on the way to work all the time, just voted for her to move on to the next round of the show because they are letting viewers pick their faves today: http://www.msg.com/votesoundtracks/

There are lots of great programs on television. You just have to plow through all the junk to find them. It also depends on which channels you get and what types of programs you like. Personally, I like serialized dramas, so most of my list will be comprised of them.

In no particular order.

Dexter (SHO/CBS) - This is a creepy drama starring Michael C. Hall (Six Feet Under) as a blood spatter expert who works for the police; he also happens to be a serial killer. It's very intriguing stuff, being inside the mind of a self-proclaimed monster. The writing is stellar and the cast is first rate, especially Hall, who can actually make you root for a killer. Note: episodes on CBS are probably edited for content.

Breaking Bad (AMC) - A very, very dark dramady about an under-employed scientist who is working two jobs to support his pregnant wife and disabled child. Already in the midst of a mid-life crisis, he discovers that he has terminal cancer. Desperate to leave some money for his family he uses his chemistry skills to cook crystal meth with a young drug-addled loser. Bryan Cranston does a sensational job with this character. The supporting players are all good and the characterizations are spot on. The show never shies away from the very dark side of the drug world and yet manages a good balance of humour to offset the darkness.

Chuck (NBC) - My favourite of last year's crop. Chuck is a light comedy/action/drama about a an intelligent young man who was kicked out of a prestigious college and ended up working a dead end job in retail. He also ended up as a part time spy because of a computer loaded into his head (it's not as bad as it sounds). The characters are all enjoyable and the acting is solid all around. The show keeps a nice balance between the spy stories, Chuck's personal life and his work life at the "Buy More" working with a bunch of social misfits.

Battlestar Galactica (SciFi Channel) - A great political drama and commentary on current events and the human race in general. It happens to take place in outer space but it's not really a sci-fi show at it's heart. Great acting, intriguing plots and when it's firing on all cylinders it's probably the best show on tv. It does have some consistancy issues though and puts out a dog every now and then. At this point you would need to catch up on DVD. The last dozen episodes will air starting in January 2009.

If you haven't already seen them, be sure to check out Rome, Deadwood and Dead Like Me on DVD.

Non-scripted stuff:

Top Gear (BBC-America) - I have zero interest in cars (outside motor racing) and I don't even have a driving license, but I love this car show. I think it's funnier than most of the sitcoms airing at the moment (not really a difficult feat). Cars are reviewed and test driven and all the usual stuff, but the heart of the show is the interaction between the three hosts and the ridiculous "challenges" they partake in. Things like turning a crappy car into a boat and then attempting to sail across the English Channel. These things all go predictably and hilariously wrong.

Long Way Down/Round (FOX-Reality) - An interesting travel documentary featuring Ewan McGregor, his best pal Charlie and their camera-man Claudio, on long distance motorcycle trips. I'm not one for this kind of stuff but I found it very interesting, especially the episodes in Mongolia and Easter Russia. Compelling stuff.
