Nielsen sent out this list (among others) today.

There is some heartening news (though not too heartening perhaps) for some struggling shows:

Rank Programs Network in Viewership
1 STUDIO 60 NBC 10.9

3 GILMORE GIRLS CW 7.9
4 NEXT TOP MODEL CW 7.7
5 30 ROCK NBC 7.5
5 FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS NBC 7.5
7 NINE, THE ABC 6.7
7 SUPERNATURAL CW 6.7
9 KIDNAPPED NBC 6.6

The numbers represent the added percentage of viewers who watched the programs within seven days of its original showing -- and who weren't counted in the original ratings.

Those people should watch the shows live. Might've helped Kidnapped and The Nine stay on the air and they could certainly help 30 Rock, Studio 60, FNL and the CW shows, most of them struggle for viewers each week.

What, if any effect, will numbers like this have when it comes time to renew these shows? I should hope they would be taken into consideration and would help a show that is on the fence.

But see do they take it into consideration? Advertisers are very against these ratings and the network cares about making them happy. These numbers might be worthless to them. Its a shame.

i thought that the new commercial ratings that would be out in april would count the tivoed items into thier total. This would really help NBC and the CW. NBC please dont do your upfronts first. Take some time to look at the other scheduels PLEASE

Excuse my ignorance, but I dont see how time shifted viewing would or should be counted. Ratings are essentially a scoring system for advertisers. I think its fairly safe to assume people watching programs on Tivo are skipping thru commercials. Why would the advertising community care about viewship of shows where their ads are obviously not being seen? And, therefore, why would these figures impact on whether show lives or dies? Just a question.

This is why network television is worthless and Nielsens are outdated. It's all advertising rates. There are too many choices and channels now. Some day, it will all be pay tv for scripted programming.

There's no question that the business model for network television is antiquated will go the way of the dinosaur. But while it is based on advertising revenue, it is the number of people that watch the live broadcast that's important.

Oh I quite believe you. I know it's the advertising rates--and a question of who watches live that counts. Unfortunately, as you said it is antiquated. So many shows (especially shows like my favorit show on Thursday, SPN) get recorded a great deal. The number of viewers is higher, but Nielsens aren't about the shows. They're about who watches the commercials.

Time shifted viewing to commercials will be added into commercial ratings. If the commercials are skipped in a HH, they won't be added in.
