In case you were wondering, here are the initial overnight results for CBS' The Rules of Engagement:

In series-premiere news, CBS sitcom The Rules of Engagement got sampled, with a third-place 9.2/13 in the overnights at 9:30 p.m. Comparably, retention out of lead-in Two and a Half Men (#1, 10.8/15 at 9 p.m.) was 85 percent -- similar to recent occupant The New Adventures of Old Christine. Like Old Christine, Courting Alex and Out of Practice, any comedy that airs out of Two and a Half Men tends to have retention in the mid-80 percent range.

As for the premiere episode of The Rules of Engagement, here are a few observations:
1. The main apartment building the sitcom is set in looks like Will & Grace’s old address.
2. The apartment that Megyn Price and Patrick Warburton occupy looks like Paul and Jamie Buchman’s old digs on Mad About You. The only thing missing is Murray.
3. The show would be considerably better if it dumped smarmy David Spade. Heather Locklear – what am I missing here?

David was the rebound man for Heather...for a lot of us that is not a bad person to be.

As for the show, are all of the original ideas really gone? I can't believe that we keep rehashing so much stuff. Somebody please give us something new and exciting to watch on the Comedy front.

I am not a huge fan of David Spade, but I think he was cast simply because of his "smarminess." That's how the character is supposed to be - though whether that represents the average single guy, I don't know.
What I thought stank was Patrick Warburton's mechanical performance. He spoke like a robot, or like he was reading his lines off a cue card. I know he was the "fabulous" Puddy, but where is the appeal for this guy?
One of my co-workers described the show as laugh-out-loud funny. I thought it was all right, but nothing to get excited about.

I've always loved Puddy, but I can see why people don't.

Of all the comedies CBS has tried over the last few seasons (Out of Practice, Courting Alex, Chrisitne...) this is the better show. A good fit for Two and a Half Men. I can see this as a good "Couples" sitcom. both Men & Women can relate to it.

If they dump David Spade CBS could have something here.

I was pleasantly surprised by the show. I have some trepidation as to how they'll keep the engaged couple 'gimmick' going for y-e-a-rs, but maybe that will be the joke--that they'll have the world's longest engagement! As for Warburton, his robotic delivery was deliberate,I think, and I found him funny as the caveman-esque married guy. As for Spade,I agree that he was cast in part because that is his persona (smarmy), but dont forget he starred in successful sitcom JUST SHOOT ME for 6 years, too, so maybe the producers figured why not? I agree that it's a better lead-out for MEN (a very funny episode last night) than CHRISTINE, too. Bottom line: I'll come back next week.
