I'm glad you brought this up. I was pretty sure of that BONES-AI pairing but I do screw up every now and then and didn't want to mispost. Bottom line, BONES has been tried everywhere. Again, decent nicely done show, that could stay on for a good while, helping FOX through a period where drama development is hard for them to do. quote: Originally posted by mushu_jj: Actually, in its first season, Bones aired after Idol for about a month or so and then Fox moved it to 8pm because it was doing very poorly in terms of retention. Ironically, it did as well at 8pm as it did after Idol. quote: Originally posted by TV-aholic: As a Bones fan, its not a HIT. thats reservved for shows like Grey's, CSI, DWtS, and AI.
But Bones is a success. It pulls strong numbers despite never having a lead in to help it. It may be one of the only/few shows to never have AI lead in to it, ever.

Its only been on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. This past summer, it was used as filler on Fridays, but was not intended as a regular spot.

And I don't think House is going to find a whole lot more viewers long-term than it has in years after Idol. An animated show may be a post-Super Bowl option, but I think those are fairly established as well. Just goes to show what a perfect situation ABC was in two years ago with Grey's. Second year show that's a pretty big hit already, looking strong creatively, and it has a home run post-SB episode that helps it completely break out. Not many nets will have all that stuff line up in a Super Bowl year. Bones would probably drop below 6 mil on Friday.
I wonder what difference it makes any more--especially in the East--what they put on after the Superbowl--what with DVR penetration increasingly almost exponentially.

Thats a pretty good point. I bet a lot of people will just DVR it and get to bed a little earlier.

Well, a lead-in of 90 million viewers does help. Honestly, I think this DVR penetration is a bit overhyped. Yeah, it is an easier way to view TV, but for many people, it's just replacing the more old-fashioned VCR.

Not really. The DVR is sooooo much easier to use and is more able to record more shows. You don't have a stack of tapes, poor quality or remember to record it each week. And, you can record more than 6 hours at a time and multiple channels at the same time. Saying that the DVR is similar to the VCR is like saying a cell phone is being used just like a land line phone.

I hate to tell you this, but most people don't record 6 hours/night of TV on a regular basis. Most people aren't recording 2-4 shows at a time while watching another. What passes for 'normal' for some folks around here is anything but normal for the average TV viewer. In the real world, a DVR will get playback much like a VCR. The only big difference is that the DVR will record a whole bunch of other stuff that the user will never get around to watching.

I have a routine. If its not online, it gets the DVDRecorder set. If it is, I may record it to watch that evening, but chances are I have other stuff to view or can view stuff online. For instance, I may watch some Desperate Housewives from last night in a bit and catch Big Bang tomorrow. quote: Originally posted by TV-aholic: I know I am the extreme, but everyone I know that has a DVR, set all of their favorites up just in case they are out and were to miss it live.

Sure, which means that people with DVRs record a lot more stuff than people with VCRs. However, the DVR people only playback/watch the shows that they miss (and that are 'really important' to them) which are generally close to the same number of recorded shows that the VCR users watch.

Everywhere as in everywhere it could obtain benefit or wouldn't interfere with other priorities. Airing it on Monday at 8 or 9 wouldn't help, 8pm on Thursday wouldn't, and Friday would be a step down. I think they're locked into what they are doing on Sundays. It has been associated with both AI and HOUSE on Tues and Wed. I don't think the fans of this show have anything to worry about. This can stay on the air for quite a while at these modest levels. It will be a long time before FOX has the drama depth to force this off the schedule.

I didn't say it was similar to the VCR, but that it replaced it. And obviously it replaced it because it's easier to use.

Sorry if I misunderstood you, but I got the impression that you were saying that... the DVR is not a big deal since it is just an upgrade from a VCR
