The Sarah Connor Chronicles Gets Big Push from Fox

45-Second Trailer for Midseason Rookie to Air During Game Three of World Series

By Ben Grossman -- Broadcasting & Cable, 10/21/2007 8:00:00 AM

Fox will unveil the first 45-second trailer for midseason rookie The Sarah Connor Chronicles during game three of the World Series as the network ramps up a massive promotional push for its top freshman hopeful this year.

“This is the biggest campaign for a new midseason show in years,” Fox executive vice president of marketing and communications Joe Earley said. “And I can’t remember when we’ve started a campaign so early.”

Fox is backing the Jan. 14 premiere with a giant push after making the decision to hold it until midseason. But for Fox, a midseason debut isn’t the back-burner it is at other networks.

Fox basically starts its season in January every year when American Idol returns with its promotional power. Additionally, the network can heavily push the new show to a compatible sports-fan audience before and after its debut with high-profile events, including the Super Bowl, the World Series and college football’s Bowl Championship Series.

The trailer, which will airs Saturday, Oct. 27, will kick into high gear a campaign that very quietly began back in September.

A first phase of on-air teases launched Sept. 17 with a series of graphics popping up on the lower third of the screen during shows. The image was just two red dots that would disappear after only four seconds.

The dots were actually superimposed over a show as it aired, so network executives had to find a time in each show when there was a dark backdrop at the bottom of the screen during a noncrucial time in the show’s story arc.

The network gave no other information to viewers, such as the fact that the dots were supposed to be eyes of the Terminator robots from the show. According to Earley, some viewers wondered if it was some kind of new anti-piracy technique.

A second phase rolled out two weeks later with an image more recognizable as a Terminator’s face.

A third phase of on-air promos will now include the premiere date or the show’s URL, and will also incorporate full-screen graphics.

A final phase next month will add full tune-in information.

While the campaign will include a major off-network spend, Fox is also paying close attention to the online world, which can virally boost a science-fiction show, a la Lost or Heroes.

With that in mind, Fox had show creator Josh Friedman leak the show’s premiere date to the online world the day before the network made it public.

“We are making sure from the outset that we have that relationship going,” Earley said.

A promotional push will be needed, as the network will ask the show to lead off Monday at 8 p.m., where it will be followed by 24.

While conventional wisdom says networks use an established show to launch a rookie behind it, Fox doesn’t want to mess with the time slot for its successful serialized drama, nor would it want to put The Sarah Connor Chronicles up against Heroes and make TiVo-less science-fiction fans choose.

Those red eyes are annoying while trying to watch shows. They just randomly pop up and flash on screen. That idea should have been canned.

I think there are perfect.

I finally saw the promo (or at least the last part of it) during this sunday night during either the football game or baseball pre game. All I saw was the glowing red eyes. I instantly new what they were and what it was for, even though I missed most of the actuall commercial.

The red eyes are instant product recognition.

Speaking of which, did they really need to add the word 'Terminator' to the title of this TV series in order to get likely viewers to know what it was?

Well aside from major Terminator fans, a lot of people probably don't know who Sarah Connor is. I think it will only help them. In fact, I would've just called it Terminator.

Aside from people that have watched the Terminator films, do you really think anyone will be interested in T:SCC?

Well, I do think you can get new fans, but there are a lot of people familiar with the movies. The last 2 movies took about $350 million in ticket sales, most of which were in 1991 dollars. Plus, I Think, Universal Studios still has a Terminator show at their parks.

It will be like any other TV show, spun off from a theatrical movie, if it is done well, people will watch it. If not, it will tank.

The Premiere will doe very well, after that it will all depend on the quality of the show itself.

I have a feeling that there will be very little, if any, actual terminators in the show. The time fram of SCC is just after the T2 movie, so there has not been Judgement Day or any cyborgs yet made.

As I stated in the previous post, this is a well known franchise that is know by a wide range of people. Unless you are 10 and under, you should be aware of the character and the backstory.

I agree. The Terminator franchise should have a 'huge' enough following that this show will debut well. However, the last minute name change to put the word 'Terminator' in the title smacks of worry from the network more than a vote of confidence in the show reaching that 'built in' audience.

Don't forget that a 4th Terminator movie is in production.

The concern I have for the TV series is that it will spend so much time violating the movies' backstory that viewers will get sick of it. This show has so much potential by TV mindset to turn into a 'monster of the week' type show. I know you said you don't believe that there will be very many Terminators, but I am concerned that the opposite is more likely true.

In the movies, the kid didn't see any Terminators from the time before he was born until he was a teenager. He was actually convinced that his mom was a nut job. Then, when the Terminators came back for him as a teeneager, he got his first look at them, but nothing in the 2nd to 3rd movie suggested that he would see them regularly.

Logically, the series should be about Sarah and John trying to destroy skynet (just a government entity) and no terminators should be envolved up through the time when Sarah dies of cancer (The TV series won't likely reach that point). However, I'm guessing that the Conner's vs. government plot won't be good enough to hold the audience, so there will have to be frequent visits from the future and/or intermediate robot/cyborg attackers built by the government.

Note: I realize that the 'moral of the story' for T3 was that every timeline can be totally different, but that the Terminator/skynet problem is still fated to occur. So, in that respect, the TV show can do whatever it wants without 'violating' anything.

I'm not that concerned about the title now including TERMINATOR in it. All it does is reinforce the brand and the franchise.

After readin the synopsis on IMDB, it sounds like pretty good idea, but could run into the same problems that LOST and now Heroes is facing, in a second season.

I actually like the plot of the New Movie. Could be a great Summer Action Movie, if done right.

One thing we do know is that no matter waht already exisits in a franchise or series or movies timeline, It will be changed if it serve the CURRENT product well. Just ask Howard Cunningham Jr. about it. Wink

No Problem.
I'm happy to see them catching on.

BTW, I just added a BattleStar Galactica Icon. See the Cable thread or the Show Icons Thread
