-Adults 18-49:

-Given the unusual circumstances last night, the listing of winners and losers is excluded.

----------

-Ratings Breakdown:
Needless to say, it was a very atypical night of television on this fourth Thursday in June, with coverage of the passing of Michael Jackson and Farrah Fawcett flooding the airwaves. Five hours of the Big 3 network line-ups in total were devoted to these two icons. CBS was the most-watched network, while Fox was tops among adults 18-49.

CBS pushed up its regularly scheduled 10 p.m. telecast of The Mentalist to 8 p.m. to make room for news coverage of Michael Jackson. An encore telecast of The Mentalist opened the evening with 6.62 million viewers (1) and a 1.2/ 4 among adults 18-49 (#2t) at 8 p.m., followed by a repeat of CSI (Viewers: #1, 8.51 million; A18-49: #4, 1.6/ 5) and the 10 p.m. news special (Viewers: #2, 7.57 million; A18-49: #2, 2.0/ 6).

ABC kept repeat episodes of canceled Samantha Who? (Viewers: 3, 3.73 million; A18-49: #4, 1.0/ 4) and In the Motherhood (Viewers: #4, 2.69 million; A18-49: #4, 0.7/ 2) in place from 8-9 p.m. But it replaced repeats of Grey’s Anatomy and Private Practice with two special editions of newsmagazine 20/20. The first hour, which focused on Michael Jackson, averaged 5.71 million viewers (#3) and a 1.7/ 5 among adults 18-49 (#2t) at 9 p.m. The next, which focused on Farrah Fawcett, was first with 8.23 million viewers and a 2.3/ 7 in the demo at 10 p.m.

NBC aired back-to-back repeats of The Office from 8-9 p.m., and it averaged 3.05 million viewers (#4) and a 1.2/ 4 among adults 18-49 (#2t). That led into two-hours of Dateline at 5.53 million viewers and a 1.7/ 5 in the demo from 9-11 p.m. Take a look at the half-hour breakdown:

Dateline (NBC)
9:00 p.m. – Viewers: 4.67 million (#4), A18-49: 1.5/ 5 (#3)
9:30 p.m. – Viewers: 5.82 million (#4), A18-49: 1.8/ 5 (#3)
10:00 p.m. – Viewers: 5.64 million (#3), A18-49: 1.6/ 5 (#3)
10:30 p.m. – Viewers: 6.01 million (#4), A18-49: 1.7/ 5 (#3)

In the 9-11 p.m. battle of 20/20 versus Dateline, 20/20 was victorious.

Elsewhere, a repeat of Fox’s Bones kicked-off the night for Fox with 4.56 million viewers (#2) and a first-place 1.4/ 5 among adults 18-49. The live So You Think You Can Dances Results Show followed with a below average 6.86 million viewers (#2) and a 2.5/ 8 among adults 18-49 (#1) at 9 p.m. The CW capped off the evening with repeats of Smallville (Viewers: #5, 1.49 million; A18-49: #5, 0.6/ 2), which moves to Friday next fall, and Supernatural (Viewers: #5, 1.10 million; A18-49: #5, 0.4/ 1).

Wonder how USA did with new programming opposite Michael's saddened too early passing. I was glued to CNN all night watching scripted tv didn't cross my mind.

Yesterday was definitely an odd night of primetime television to say the least. But, those are some great 20/20 numbers for the Farrah special at 10pm. CBS News, oddly, also had some good numbers at 10pm.

This really seemed to have affected the So You Think You Can Dance results show - is that a series low? Perhaps FOX should have been smarter and held off the results show?

I'll end by saying RIP both Michael Jackson and Farrah Fawcett. Yesterday was a tough day, and we'll miss them both.

I was relieved to have something else to watch besides excessive media reaction to the death of a singer who hasn't mattered for a long time. But can I just say--the way he was treated as a child, which ended up destroying him as an adult--that should have mattered to us.

Not feeling Burn Notice this season. I don't think they've found a reason for the story to go on yet, with all the major plot threads resolved. Maybe it'll pick up as the season goes on, but I may just have reached the point where I've had my fill of it.

Royal Pains last night was probably the most entertaining one hour drama I've ever seen on USA. It's earning those ratings, which will continue to go up for a while longer. Such a clever idea--bring back a little-used form--the non-hospital medical procedural (haven't seen that since Marcus Welby)--grafted to the Fish-Out-of-Water story device, and add in the lives of the rich and clueless gimmick. Very neat. But I'd watch just for the female cast members. Wink

You're right pisher. The way he was treated as a child definitely is the reason he was Wacko Jacko as an adult. I think in a lot of ways, his father never letting him be a kid pushed him to wanting to be a kid for the rest of his life.

My guess is that they were down quite a bit because of the news coverage.

When I found out this morning about the sad passing of Michael Jackson I turned on Sky News and was glued for about half an hour but then I realized they were just repeating the same information over and over so I switched off. All day the cable news and Radio stations (In the UK at least) have been reporting the death of MJ but they just keep saying the same thing over and over and I wish they'd stop until there was new information and report the rest of the worlds news.

I hope they let MJ rest in peace but I think the sad truth is they'll open new inquiries and investigations about his 'questionable' behaviour. But I really hope they just leave it and let MJ rest in peace and don't unnesseccarily drag his family through hell.

Play the 2009 July Sweep Prediction Game

This year, the July Sweep runs from Thursday July 2nd to Wednesday July 29th, and we have the second annual July Sweep Prediction Game. Everyone who is a registered member of pifeedback.com is eligible to play the game. All are welcome.

In an effort to attract back some of those precious A18-49s who have drifted over to cable, some of the networks have aggressively lined up specials and fresh original summer series to stunt for a better result. Just look at the cornucopia of new series debuting, fresh episodes, specials and movie broadcast premieres by network that are upcoming up for the July Sweep:
  • NBC: 'Law & Order: Criminal Intent' (new from USA), 'Dateline: Monday', 'Great American Road Trip' (begins July 7th), 'America's Got Talent', 'The Philanthropist', 'The Listener', 'Chopping Block', 'Dateline: Friday', 'Kings', 'Dateline: Sunday', 'Merlin', 'Meteor' (miniseries July 12th + 19th), 'The Storm' (miniseries July 26th)
  • ABC: 'The Bachelorette', 'Here Come the Newlyweds', 'Dating in the Dark' (begins July 18th), 'The Superstars', 'Better Off Ted', 'Primetime: Family Secrets', 'Wipeout', 'I Survived a Japanese Gameshow', 'Primetime: Crime', 'Samantha Who', 'In the Motherhood', 'Surviving Suburbia', 'The Goode Family', '20/20', 'Eli Stone', 'Dirty Sexy Money' (begins July 18th), 'Just for Laughs'
  • FOX: 'Mental', 'Hell's Kitchen' (returns July 21st), 'More to Love' (begins July 28th), 'So You Think You Can Dance: Performance', 'The Moment of Truth' (returns July 29th), 'So You Think You Can Dance: Results', 'Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader' (returns July 3rd), 'Cops', 'America's Most Wanted', 'Sit Down & Shut Up' (return TBA)
  • CBS: 'Big Brother' (returns July 9th), '48 Hours Mystery: Tuesdays', 'Flashpoint' (returns July 17th), 'Harper's Island'
  • MyNetworkTV: 'Street|Patrol', 'Jail', 'Baggin' (new Wednesday series, begins TBA), 'WWE Friday Night Smackdown', 'The 2009 Hero Awards' (July 7th special), A COOL DRY PLACE (July 18th, broadcast premiere)
  • The CW: no original programming scheduled

MyNetworkTV hopes for heroic Nielsens when it airs 'The 2009 Hero Awards' on July 7th as part of its aggressive slate of original July Sweep programming

So now it's your turn to predict the outcome of the 2009 July Sweep. Will a re-surgent, originals-laden NBC come from behind and move ahead of FOX, who have won the past four July Sweeps in A18-49 demo? Will ABC be able to get its post-DTV ratings back on track? Will the all-repeat The CW be able to beat ION as the two networks battle for July-Sweep-always-in-encore supremacy?

Just go to the following link below and submit your entry.

Good luck to all contestants who enter. Good luck to the networks and their web of affiliates across the country who are in the fight of their life against the incursions of cable into their viewer base.

Thank you,

Finally agree (almost 100%) so thought it to be a momentous occasion to share. I haven't watched a medical show since Medical Center. (Except for a very few eps of Chicago Hope) This is a very entertaining hour.

Ironic, that it took the passing of a Music Video pioneer that helped build MTV into what it is today (or at least what it was in its heyday) to get them to play music videos again.

I not only would like to see the numbers for the cable news channels from 4 P.M. (EDT)onward, but also how the three broadcast-network evening newscasts did last night (June 25th).

I would think their combined ratings were far higher than "normal" for a Thursday evening in late June, perhaps close to double what they were on Wednesday.

'Medical Center' was good, and it did have a rather good run. What I remember best about this series was its tendency to push the envelope with a string of very controversial episodes which, of course, caused panic amongst the more skittish CBS affiliates...Mr. Robert Reed starred in one episode where he was undergoing a sex change.

Mr. James Daly and Mr. Chad Everett starred in CBS's 'Medical Centre', which ran for seven seasons

For me, 'St. Elsewhere' is the definitive medical series. I do wish the producers would issue a full set of DVDs for this marvelous series from the legendary MTM Productions studio. My favourite episodes were any of the many that featured Mrs. Hufnagel, brilliantly performed by Miss Florence Halop.

'St. Elsewhere' defined the medical drama series...Miss Florence Halop portrayed Mrs. Hufnagel in one of the best supporting performances of all time
