mushu and Riff are apparently STILL in denial about this concept.

Denial? I just stated how HIMYM failed to grow out of its lead in when it had a lead in of 3 million more people and less competition. Regardless of the share, Big Bang is still doing well and will make a second season. Unlike last season's 8:30pm occupants, it is managing to take advantage of more people being available, unlike the Class and Christine. Had HIMYM been given a better lead in, it probably could've
been developed into a hit for CBS.

if and buts...... to me though.. as much as I like HIMYM the only way it would ever be a hit would be if it was on NBCs Thursday night lineup. I dont think CBS attracts enough of the 'hitmaking' crowd to ever make a 20 something comedy a hit...

actually, mushu, HIMYM built on KOQ in 18 to 49 most of the time in season one, and only dipped in total viewers (to be expected for a first year show versus a popular show entering its curtain call run).

That's not the point, though. The point is, for a show to go up by a certain margin at 8:30pm isn't remarkable -- it's what networks expect.

HIMYM and Big Bang are doing what they should in the incredibly difficult context of 2007 sitcoms.

I agree totally. In fact, overall I like the shows on NBC much more than those on any other network. I regularly watch seven shows on NBC (Chuck, Heroes, Journeyman, 30 Rock, the Office, ER, Friday Night Lights) compared to two on CBS (Cane and Big Bang Theory), none on ABC (one when Lost starts), three on Fox (Simpsons, King of the Hill, and Family Guy (4 when 24 starts), and one on CW (Reaper). Besides proving I watch too much TV, this shows that NBC is my favorite network.

The surprising thing about NBC is that at the end of the day 'Life' is probably their best new show and I don't think they spent .50cents at the start of the season promoting it. BW has been an absolute bust to this point. I'm still watching Journeyman and it's a shame Heroes can't pull it's own weight to get more eyes on JMan. Although apparently Jman forgot to read the lost playbook on how to keep viewers... failing to reveal answers = lost viewers....

Or maybe you should stop refering to shows that got a full-season order as "most likely" to not get renewed.

For the record, how many new shows has ABC canceled so far this year? They've picked up four of them for a full season so far.

It's not about more or less likely--personally, I'd have given DSM more of a chance than some, but if they really are using scab writers (and this thread is the first I'd heard of that), it's all over. The audience they have is hardly so loyal that they'll just hang around when the quality goes to hell, and it will. Period.

Why do people take it so personally when somebody says a show they like getting marginal ratings might get canceled? Shows with GOOD ratings sometimes get canceled. Roll Eyes

An actual series high for Samantha Who. I suspect more to do with DWTSs above-average ratings and some viewers hanging on for the Bachelor finale than a sign that the show is going to do anything but drop drastically in two weeks without DWTS as a lead-in and against televisions real number one comedy.

So sad about AiA awful numbers, this series is hilarious. With CW's new philosophy about "Nielsen ratings don't matter anymore" (see EW article about GG), any chance it could get a second season?

First I have heard of this as well... if it is happening... to me it depends on what the 'scabs' are doing... if they are being tasked to write full episodes then forget it... but if it's polishing the scripts they had almost done not sure too many people would catch that. I believe they have 11 episodes in the can and had another two scripts kicking around...

Travis, do you have any access to the numbers for Ellen Degeneres' variety special 9:00-10:30 ET on TBS last night? Thanks for always posting the finals. It is much appreciated!

Nice job for Samantha Who. I predict it falls to around 10 million once Dancing is over and possibly regains some when the Dancing spinoff premieres.

I hope so. This show is so well done. Every week it seems to get better. I think there is something magical about Christina Applegate.

I haven't tallied all of my shows by network til now.

CW - Smallville, Supernatural, Reaper
ABC - Grey's Anatomy, Lost, Private Practice(hate it, but haven't missed an ep), Desperate Housewives(3 years of hating it, still watching), Pushing Daisies
CBS - Amazing Race, Survivor, Moonlight, Jericho(when it returns)
NBC - Chuck, Journeyman, Heroes, Bionic Woman, Life, Scrubs, 30 Rock, The Office, My Name is Earl, ER, Medium(when returns)
FOX - Prison Break, 24, Kitchen Nightmares, Bones

So totals and fav show on network in ()
NBC - 11 Shows Heroes/Scrubs
ABC - 5 shows Lost
CBS - 4 Shows Jericho
FOX - 4 Shows Bones
CW - 3 Shows Supernatural

I also watch a few on DVD delay when the seasons come out like House, HIMYM, and The Unit

I do watch too much television, but I am fine with that.

I totally agree. I've been reluctant to say it for fear of getting bashed, but there are moments when she has the same sort of spark that Mary Tyler Moore has.

Thanks Travis ... especially for the cable numbers.

So assuming for the moment that the averages for MNF as relatively consistent, it looks like MNF was second in both viewers and demo from 8:30 to 9, fourth from 9 to 10 and third from 10 to 11. Not an exact comparison since I don't know the break down of MNF and I am comparing Fast Nationals to the Finals, but it should be close.

A few other points, ESPN probably beat NBC in both viewers and demo two out of three hours. Looking at this reminds me of how tough it is for the nets these days. You might as well say that there is a 5th Network for the Big 4 and CW to compete against on air on Monday's.
