It would not surprise me at all to see Gossip Girl grow next season because it is clearly catching on with a wider fanbase.
Or maybe fans didn't want to wait for the ep to appear online so they watched live for the finale. Could be a one time thing because none of the other eps did near that well. They should still be reairing online though, just a wait two to three days to put it up (which is normally the length it took because the CW is that pathetic). I am using the summer as an opportunity to catch up on Gossip Girl this summer and give it a shot. So far I'm liking what I've seen. However, I like the other Gossip Girl fans, am too hip for regular TV. I'm watching on my PC.

TNT's L.A. Lakers-San Antonio Spurs matchup Tuesday (7.2 million) and Thursday (6.8 million). ESPN's Boston Celtics-Detroit Pistons telecasts rounded out the top five (6.45 million on Friday, 6.43 million on Wednesday and 6.1 million on Monday).

The CW actually made a conscious choice with Gossip Girl to delay online airing by a week. I believe the last four episodes or so are that way. It was an effort to push people back to the television. Did it work, maybe. They did see a small bump in ratings over that time. But then it might also be due to them pairing it with One Tree Hill.

I think you have it backwards. Gossip Girl ratings when it came back from WGA hiatus were similar to the Fall ratings it had. Meanwhile, One Tree Hill avoided its normal end of year ratings drop because Gossip Girl was there this year to prop it up it with a strong lead-in.

Strong lead in? Give me a break and One Tree Hill held on pretty well considering it was facing House, 2.5 Men, and Dancing by the end of it. Are you forgetting that it had an average lead in of about 1.6 million viewers during the strike season? OTH did very well for the CW this year. The only shows on the CW that did better were Smackdown, Top Model, and Smallville.

Yes. Strong lead-in. Remember last year when One Tree Hill had to finish up its season with Hidden Palms as a lead-in?
Clearly, Gossip Girl was a better lead-in and clearly Gossip Girl was not being propped up by One Tree Hill since Gossip Girl ratings were basically on par with its Fall run.

But i don't think that will happen anytime soon.
I agree that it won't happen any time soon. The allure of ultra-cheap programming is just too much for the networks (and cable too; look at what has become of A&E) Doesn't mean we still can't hope for it's eventual demise though.
Way to go NHL! Excellent result.
EDITED: because hockey and football have many things in common, but they are not the same thing in any way.
