His achievements and intellect were not being demeaned. But there was a herd reaction by the GOP commentariat to find some fresh alternative to Obama and as usual these media types outsmarted themselves. He had not even proven his mettle on the Sunday am talk circuit and there he was last nite.
Frankly, I think he was foolish to take what was always going to be a thankless job. And I half-suspect one reason he got the job was that his potential rivals for the 2012 nomination wanted to see him screw up (instead of them).
A report today the CBS has extended a three-year deal with Cookie Jar Entertainment to provide programming and secure sponsorship (the block had formerly been programmed by DIC Entertainment). The three-hour block will continue to feature girl-targeted shows.
In Saturday morning kidvid season-to-date, CBS is currently tied for fourth in the targeted K6-11 demographic:
2008-9 Season-to-date (Weeks 1-21), K6-11 Demo on Saturday Morning Kidvid --- 1. ABC 1.0/5% 2. TheCW4Kids 0.9/4% 3. FOX 4KidsTV 0.8/4% (discontinued in December 2008) 4. kewlopolis on CBS 0.3/2% 4. qubo on NBC 0.3/2%
As much as I find politics fascinating, I stopped watching these State of the Union broadcasts back in the eighties when they started to resemble infomercials, with all the phoney-baloney ovationing and such.
I miss when State of the Union speeches were serious, sober reflections on where we've been, how we got there, and where we're going.
Congress should pass a rule requiring all members to sit on their hands and listen, and stop behaving like they're in the galleys of 'American Idol'.
If you started watching them again, I wonder if they'd get canceled?

Thank GOD.
My political heroes fare as well as my television shows.
Governor Adlai Ewing Stevenson II, Senator Eugene McCarthy, Governor Jerry Brown, Rep. John Anderson, Mr. Ralph Nader...there are a few others, but they are even more obscure.
I didn't see either event, but I heard Jindal bombed out. The GOP pundit crowd got on this guy's bandwagon after the election, in what I thought was a hasty overreaction. He's not very telegenic. Even had he performed better, it was too transparent an attempt to go young and ethnic.
He was playing to his party, instead of the country--which is what all the Republicans are doing.
Yes because Democrats never do that. Loading up a stimulus package with pet projects didn't hurt their credibility at all. I think there's a very good chance Republicans retake the House in 2010.
Obama sure as hell didn't--which is why Republicans in focus groups reacted about as well as Democrats to his speech last night.

Yeah, pet projects like monitoring active volcanoes to try and prevent massive death and destruction when they erupt. And of course there was NO Republican pork in that bill.

And considering what a hot streak you've been on lately as a political prognosticator.....

Too bad CW dumped the finale on a night with a rerun for a lead in. Privileged was off the air for a few weeks, and with CW's other shows in repeats there was little promotional platform for this episode.

I found that ending odd as well.
I had hoped that 'Privileged' might see a season high up against President Obama's speech and 'Whacked Out Video' encores on MyNetworkTV but it was not to be.
I would think The CW's remaining open Tuesday hour for next season is now down to 'Reaper' vs the re-boot of the 'Melrose Place' series. I hope 'Reaper' leaps out of the gate with a good-sized audience (and a healthy A18-34 too) next Tuesday when it returns.
I think you might actually see The CW revisit the notion of genre television on Sundays now that they have the night back in hand. And that genre being scifi/fantasy. Reaper and that new Vampire Diaries are candidates. I do not think that The CW will stack 90210 and Melrose back to back. Instead I think they will roll with Melrose behind America's Next Top model and the Gossip Girl spinoff out of 90210. Thursdays and Mondays are locked back up by renewals announced yesterday.

They dumped it there because they had to make room for Reaper which might get better ratings during sweeps. I would say Reaper comes back to get about 2.5 million. But that is a big maybe.
The more I look at the CW I am beginning to see a movement to how FOX tried to get off the ground, with a little bit of The WB tied into it. I do not see anything of UPN in the channel any longer.

All the clapping and standing ovations did not ring true last night.

The outlook for upfront is so bleak at this point that I'm not sure The CW will continue to sell 13 hours of primetime next season (plus 2 hours of Sunday EasyView). Also, even though The CW has improved numbers on Sunday, most of the improvement is outside their core A18-34 demographic which seems to be unshakeable from its preference for FOX's Sunday animation domination and ABC's shows.
If Sundays get chopped, I think Mondays will stay the same, Tuesdays will be '90210' into 'Reaper', Wednesdays 'ANTM' into 'Melrose', Thursdays the same, and Fridays an 'ANTM' encore into an umbrella hour of revolving (low-cost) reality shows.
If the 'Vampire Diaries' pilot clicks, I think it will be held for debut in winter (as inter-season filler) or spring debut.
