Prime-Time Ratings:
Wednesday 3/19/08

The following results are based on the fast affiliate ratings (Live Plus Same Day data)

-Total Viewers:
Fox: 18.10 million, CBS: 8.10, NBC: 7.62, ABC: 6.17, CW: 2.73

-Adults 18-49:
Fox: 6.8 rating/18 share, CBS: 2.6/ 7, ABC: 2.1/ 6, NBC: 2.0/ 5, CW: 1.3/ 4

----------

-Yesterday’s Winners:
The Moment of Truth (Fox), American Idol (Fox), Law & Order (NBC)

-On the Downside:
Survivor: Micronesia (CBS), America’s Next Top Model (CW)

-Yesterday’s Losers (Excluding Repeats):
Wife Swap (ABC), Big Brother 9 (CBS), Men in Trees (ABC)

----------

-Ratings Breakdown:
Reality programming dominated once again last night, with 54 percent of the schedule of a non-scripted nature. Fox’s American Idol led the troops, of course, with the live results show at a hefty 25.53 million viewers and a 9.5 rating/24 share among adults 18-49 from 9-10 p.m. That was quite a shock seeing Amanda Overmyer depart, wasn’t it?

Earlier in the evening, Fox’s relocated The Moment of Truth and a Wednesday edition of CBS’ Survivor: Micronesia shared leadership as follows:

Wednesday 8 p.m.
Survivor: Micronesia (CBS)
Viewers: 11.34 million (#1), A18-49: 3.7/10 (#2)

The Moment of Truth (Fox)
Viewers: 10.66 million (#2), A18-49: 4.1/12 (#1)

While Survivor still has an audience, it is certainly not the ratings blockbuster it once was. Also airing from 8-9 p.m. was ABC’s Wife Swap (Viewers: #3, 5.82 million; A18-49: #3, 2.1/ 6), a repeat of NBC’s Law & Order: Criminal Intent (Viewers: #4: 5.63 million; A18-49: #5, 1.4/ 4) and America’s Next Top Model on the CW (Viewers: #5, 3.71 million; A18-49: #4, 1.8/ 5). While Top Model remains the CW’s most-watched show, year-to-year it remains down by double-digit percentages. To rejuvenate the franchise, why not do a season with all male models in 2008-09?

At 9 p.m., Fox’s aforementioned American Idol not only dominated, it beat the four competing networks combined by five percent. Take a look:

Wednesday 9 p.m.
American Idol (Fox) – Viewers: 25.53 million (#1), A18-49: 9.5/24 (#1)
Supernanny (ABC) – Viewers: 6.87 million (#2), A18-49: 2.6/ 7 (#2)
Law & Order: Criminal Intent R (NBC) – Viewers: 6.78 million (#3), A18-49: 1.6/ 4 (#4)
Big Brother 9 (CBS) – Viewers: 6.73 million (#4), A18-49: 2.4/ 6 (#3)
Pussycat Dolls Present: Girlicious (R) – Viewers: 1.75 million (#5), A18-49: 0.9/ 2 (#5)

Worth noting for Supernanny, however, was growth of 1.05 million viewers and 24 percent among adults 18-49 despite facing American Idol.

Top rated honors at 10 p.m. fell in NBC’s corner, with veteran Law & Order at 10.45 million viewers and a 3.1/ 9 among adults 18-49. Second was a repeat of CBS’ CSI: NY (Viewers: 6.24 million; A18-49: 1.8/ 5), followed by ABC’s Men in Trees (Viewers: 5.83 million; A18-49: 1.6/ 4), which has lost all potential signs of future life due to the haphazard scheduling.

How much longer of the Pussycat Dolls do we have? The show was bad to begin with, but then they changed the format of the show. Please someone tell me they are almost done.

I didn't expect Moment of Truth to do so well. It really did a number to Survivor it looks like.

Next Top Model posted week to week gains. Wonder if that will be the trend now that it is not up against Idol.

Survivor still did pretty good, all thing's considered. CBS Wed @ 8 has been an AWFUL timeslot for them, so it beat that curse, a bit.

I'm surprised Moment of Truth is doing as well as it is.

Hahaha Marc, I applaud your outside-of-the-box thinking, but I highly doubt the show would work with male models. Half the fun of the show comes from the drama and emotion that the females bring -- I think the males would be pretty "blah" and downright boring.

I think I had more to do with people not remembering it moved to wednesday this week. I follow NCAA bball and still almost forgot to watch last night so imagine people that have no clue basketball is on tonight. Most people probably remembered but even 10% forgetting would explain the drop from last week. Year to year its been down on thursday as well

Survivor probably won't be CBS's #1 show this week like it was last week.

Back to back week's of players leaving without being voted out and scheduling the show out of its timeslot for the NCAAs took its toll.

Marc's 'outside the box' thinking is horrible in this case. Doing a show about male models would be like doing a season of American Idol about 'backup singers'. There is no such thing as a male 'supermodel' because virtually no one cares about male models or male fashion.

It's not even funny how big of a gap FOX has opened up from the rest of the networks. Pretty Soon, the debate will be about the other 3 networks being the "weblets" and FOX being the single big network.

I agree, and to make thing worse for CW i think also the time of the female supermodels has gone. It's just not an interesting subject anymore

Hey, was that the first time BB9 did 6 million against IDOL? If so that a bit of an uptick. You have to hand it to BB9 they've got a core group of viewers showing up at least in the 5 million range 3 nights a week (I'm one of them)

As much as I love BB though CBS should be ashamed for not having a second TAR that was ready to go...as that is always going to be the better CBS reality show over BB.

With a steep drop from last season, now in the one millions and poor demo, it's obviously clear there's no longer any interest. They should just end it, no one wants another girl pop group. I'm still surprised that 'Crowned' was renewed, so who's to say that 'Girlicious' won't. The CW is setting the bar very low if keep these shows around, even if they are only fillers.

Survivor usually drops about one million and 0.5 for the first Wed. airing, and this year's drop was about that in demo and a little more in viewers. So this particular week is no big deal really. It's just down because this whole cycle is down.

A.C. There wasn't another AR ready to go. Since last year they only greenlite one cycle, thats all the had ready, and once they finally did green light cycle 13, it was to late. Unlike most reality shows AR takes about 4 to 5 months to plan, cast, do a practise run, film and edit for a cycle.

They still haven't started filming the 13th cycle (though that should happen in just a couple weeks).

The problem was the CBS should have given teh go ahead for two cycles last amy and tehn they would have had to.

Frankly it just didn't make since. Cycle 10 was teh 3rd highest rated cyle. All Stars (will lower then 10) was still an improvement year to year for AR, and one of the stronger performers for AR in the spring.

Oh well, I will be very curious if in May they don't under an additional cycle (but it wouldn't suprise me it they don't, and just do cycle 13 int eh fall or whenever they need filler.

They do a practice run of the entire course? I always wondered about shows like that and The Mole, how do they make sure the contestants don't get into trouble...
