Seriously, the reason The X-Files was a better show than Fringe in its early days (in spite of some really bad episodes like Chris Carter's overbudgeted "Space") is that they had better scripts, provided by Glen Morgan, James Wong, Howard Gordon, etc. And of course the shows whose footsteps The X-Files was following in were mainly forgotten, so it didn't have to suffer from constant comparisons.
I'd sooner watch Fringe than about 60% of X-Files episodes--let alone those two lousy theatrical films.
But I may feel quite differently in a few months time. Fringe has yet to prove itself, but saying Jackson & Torv aren't the new Mulder & Scully is pretty pointless--they aren't supposed to be. There's no skeptic/believer dynamic there. They really are trying something different in this genre that was well-established long before The X-Files premiered.
And since acting talent means box office success. Duchovny and Andreson are great actors. Torv and Jackson are amateurs
And BTW even the X-files movie which disappointed me was still better than the Fringe pilot
I'm surprised that no one has done the "Opportunity Knocks-few answer" pun....I saw the show on the website- I like game shows, but ye gods, what a snoozer..
and I say Cloris or Ted go tonight- Kim does have a bit of a fanbase, and the most well known of the three most in danger (the ones with scores under 21)- but whoever came up with the idea to have Kim dance to "Baby Got Back" should get a raise....

I'm somewhat shocked at the numbers for House. You can't tell me that last year's viewers are flocking to NCIS? That doesn't make sense.
Disappointing for Opportunity Knocks. ABC is going to be an island again this year on Tuesday with poor/great/poor numbers for the night.
Marc, do you have the half hour breakdown for Opportunity Knocks? I'm wondering if people who tuned in liked what they saw.
And there was no talent of any kind evident in that awful waste of film that is "X-Files: I Want to Believe".

Duchovny and Anderson were widely dismissed as wooden inexpressive actors when The X-Files first aired--even by many critics and fans who loved the show.
Frankly, I think they went from being underrated to being overrated--and the correction process continues. They have been in almost nothing but horrible flop movies since the show ended--and the show itself ended as a horrible flop. I hope for Jackson & Torv's sake that Fringe only lasts a few seasons, so they don't get trapped the way Anderson & Duchovny did.

Then why was last night's Fringe watched by several times as many people as went to see the X-Files movie in North America?
Hard to allow for worldwide ticket prices, but I'd bet good money that last night's Fringe was watched by more people in the U.S. than went to see the X-Files movie WORLDWIDE.
I'm actually pleasantly surprised by the drop in the numbers for House. I used to love the series but when they changed the story line during the last season, it was no longer a regular for me. Then, they changed it to a new night this year, placing it up against juggernaut NCIS, and here we are. That should tell the writer's of the series and the network something.
Marc what do you think of the survival chances for The Mentalist on CBS ? Are the initial ratings/demos a good sign or do you think it will start failing against AI ?
Unless you've been in a coma for the last few months all the BUZZ was about FRINGE the next big breakout hit...or so they said it would be.
FOX gave it a big build-up (nothing close to what they gave SCC), but I didn't see that much buzz.

That is how it was overrated because it failed to deliver on being the next LOST.
You mean like every other show JJ Abrams has ever been involved with?
At least it's not the next Alias--already far more successful.
I'm sorry, but that isn't what 'overrated' means. For a show to be underrated or overrated, it has to be on for at least a month or two. Give Fringe a little time to earn your hatred. Hater.
Well it looks like NBC' 7 week winning streak will officially be coming to an end this week. Wow, that network is a mess. Poor fox, I bet that they are really regretting having moved House to a lower HUT time period. ABC, what are you thinking by giving valuable premiere-week real estate to the less than craptacular magician David Blaine. Every one of his specials have been ratings bombs, you could have used that post Dancing time slot to premiere a new or returning show. Idiots. And finally, kudos to Simon Baker, star of the Mentalist, for what seems to finally be a hit for the guy, lets hope that cbs doesnt give you the shaft for the third straight time.

And Fringe will barely be a hit let alone a smash hit
90210 is a bomb, i was expecting that.
CBS must be thrilled with the start they're having. And CM/CSINY will do very well today. Anyone knows why they're delaying CSI for a couple of weeks?
Because there is a presidential debate between Obama and McCain on Thursday October 2nd @ 9PM ET. So unlike ABC which still chose to premiere Grey's Anatomy on September 25 and then preempt it on October 2 and let it return on October 9. CBS just decided appareantly to start CSI: and The Eleventh Hour on October 9, so there will be no interruption after just 1 week. Which I think is a good decision.
I'm not too worried about House. It has loyal viewers, and it was excellent last nite, classic House humor and unigue House logic in solving a case. I loved that he is looking for another man-friend; yet Wilson still pushes his buttons. Such a unigue show, but unless you appreciate this type of show, it won't have mass appeal like the CBS shows. Fringe was good but not great. I like the actors. It's still too early to comment on their chemistry; character development takes a while to build, but the stories I think are interesting. And WAT was awful last nite. Their characters just seem to be going through the motions. Steven Weber didn't add anything last nite. I think WAT and SVU are both stale, and I would like to see some great new show come along for Tuesday at 10. The returning CBS procedurals all have some sort of cliffhanger from last season. I certainly don't expect those numbers to continue into the season. People are sampling now. I think FOX's numbers will improve next week, and will remain fairly constant throughout the season. I expect CBS numbers to drop, however.

Come on, it's way easier to watch the TV than go to movies. And easier
Fringe is overbuzzed while XFiles ended almost a decade ago. Easy to understand why the movie flopped in US (internationally it did well)
I don't get why there is so much comparisson between X-files and Fringe. Sure, they deal with similar themes, but so did countless other shows. I think the two are completelly different in feel, look, character dynamics, dialogue, storytelling... I'm not a big fan of either show, but they're still mildly enjoyable. Acting wise though, I think Torv is much better than Anderson, while Duchovny kicks Jackson's ass.
