-Ratings Breakdown: Led by a night of season finales, CBS won this final Monday of the May 2008 sweeps in both total viewers and adults 18-49. ABC was a close second in total viewers, while Fox was No. 2 among adults 18-49. A distant fourth overall was NBC, followed by the CW.
Dancing With the Stars, which closes the season tonight, opened the evening with a considerable (and, of course, dominant) 18.84 million viewers and a 4.3 rating/12 share among adults 18-49 from 8-9 p.m. Second was the season-finale of Fox’s underrated Bones at 10.15 million viewers and a 3.3/10 in the demo., followed by the season-finales of CBS’ The Big Bang Theory (Viewers: #3, 7.36 million; A18-49: #3, 2.7/ 8) and How I Met Your Mother (Viewers: #3, 7.92 million; A18-49: #3, 3.2/ 9), the first hour of a 90-minute edition of NBC’s American Gladiators (Viewers: #4, 3.71 million; A18-49: #4, 1.5/ 4), and the Gossip Girl season-ender on the CW (Viewers: #5, 2.97 million; A18-49: #5, 1.4/ 4). Comparably, the Gossip Girl finale climbed to its best Monday performance to-date in adults 18-49 (1.4/4), women 18-49(2.0/5-tie) and total viewers). Gossip Girl also scored its best female teen ratings (4.1) since October 10, 2007.
Next season, look for Bones Wednesday at 8 p.m. into returning ‘Til Death and new comedy Do Not Disturb.
Fox moved into the 9-10 p.m. winner’s circle with the season-finale of House at 16.16 million viewers and a 5.7/14 among adults 18-49. Next fall, look for House Tuesday at 8 p.m. into new J.J. Abrams drama Fringe. Next was CBS’ season-ending combination of Two and a Half Men (Viewers: #2, 14.81 million; A18-49: #2, 4.8/12) and Rules of Engagement (Viewers: #2, 12.25 million; A18-49: #2, 4.3/10), followed by the first hour of the expanded season-finale of ABC’s The Bachelorette at 9.69 million viewers (#3) and a 3.1/ 8 among adults 18-49 (#3). Keep in mind that the first five minutes of The Bachelorette included the finale minutes of Dancing With the Stars, so the results are approximate. As for Rules of Engagement, which returns in midseason, the sitcom seems to have found its groove and is worth another look.
Also in the 9 p.m. hour was the final half-hour of NBC’s American Gladiators (Viewers: #4.58 million; A18-49: #4, 1.9/ 5) and the first half-hour of a 90-minute edition of Dateline (Viewers: #4, 4.57 million; A18-49: #4, 1.6/ 4), and the season-finale of the CW’s One Tree Hill at an above-average 3.15 million viewers and a 1.5/ 4 in the demo. Overall, American Gladiators averaged an embarrassing 4.00 million viewers and a 1.6/ 4 among adults 18-49 from 8-9:30 p.m.
Top honors at 10 p.m. fell in CBS’ court, with the season-finale of CSI: Miami at 16.07 million viewers and a 4.4/12 in the demo. Next was the second half of ABC’s The Bachelorette (Viewers: 7.84 million; A18-49: 3.0/ 8), followed by the 10-11 p.m. portion of Dateline at a modest 4.92 million viewers and a 1.8/ 5 among adults 18-49.

so good to hear about the CW! im a little worried about the fact CW could fold at the end of the season next year if ratings dont improve. What are your thoughts mark? do you think we need to worrie very much at this point? Will any of its shows (mainly reaper OTH GG and 90210 if it does well next season) have a chance at staying on air if the network should fold? thanks for any responses
Dancing With the Stars, which closes the season tonight, opened the evening with a considerable (and, of course, dominant) 18.84 million viewers and a 4.3 rating/12 share among adults 18-49 from 8-9 p.m.
Ended the season a little higher than I thought it would, but I still believe that the Fall edition will be when the walls fall.
The Dancing genre is being complete over saturated and this fall may see the beginning of the end. FOX, ABC, Bravo and a couple of other nets have summer dancing series. ABC had better have a very strong list of C-List Stars available for the nxt cycle.
Wow, BBT and Mother dipped a lot -- was it because of the dancing and bones finale? Regarding Mother -- now there is a cliffhanger -- rather than the Housewives annoying one.
Marc, also the bachelorette is not a finale -- but the debut of a new series -- as much as you would like it to be a finale of the whole franchise.
could not disagree with you more. Dancing with the stars is the only fun show on the air. If this show aired in the 9P slot, it's ratings would have been even higher -- should see tonight.

A nice rebound to end the season, but should have been at this level all along.

Rules of Engagement (Viewers: #2, 12.25 million; A18-49: #2, 4.3/10)
Stongest numbers yet. Will be nice for CBS to have this in its back pocket for mid season. The episode was pretty good too. Funny and some nice character development to boot.
I am disappointed BBT and HIMYM both finished under 8 million, but I will say this in their defense. With DWTS drawing 19 million, and Bones now over 10 million these two shows simply have no chance. There are simply not enough viewers left for them in the 8:00 hour. There were able to do well with just DWTS in the time slot, but with now two powerhouses in the time slot they simply have no chance. The better hope Bones stays on Wednesday next season.
What can you say is the reason for the CW finally showing SOME life -- but is it enough?
I hope they have a campaign in place to relaunch the show because I for one have no intention of starting a new serialized show unless it is from the beginning and I kinda feel most feel the same way.
I think a lote was going against BBT & HIMYM last night.
- The Bones Finale - The DWTS Finale - Daylight Savings Time
Next MAY I bet we'll see early season finales from this time slot, Say... 2nd Monday of sweeps?

Will you stop with this nonsense about the 9:00 CBS sitcoms last night. The bump up is plain and simple. It is the first time all season DWTS was not on at 9:00. It ended at 9:00 last night so Men got a bump from no DWTS on at 9:00, and ROE simply took its percentage of the Men audience, and also got a bump up. I mean, it is plain and simple, no DWTS so the 9:00 shows both got bump ups.
Is NBC even trying? Why hasn't American Gladiators been pulled? Repeats of their dramas can score higher numbers than American Gladiators. If they must air it, stick it on Friday or Saturday.
at CBS' Monday 8 to 9 PM comedies. Are those season lows? Timeslot can't be an excuse this time because Bones and Gossip Girl experienced ratings and demo increases. If these are the types of numbers CBS' Wednesday comedy block earns, the block will be DOA. Good news is Rules of Engagement is still doing well and is in reserve. Bad news, how much of its ratings is becaue of its lead in?
CW did very well. However, I don't know if its because of the shows or because the younger audience moved from DWTS and CBS comedies to the CW dramas.
Bones is doing very well and has the potential to grow in its new Wednesday 8 PM timeslot, becoming a powerhouse on Wednesday. Why is FOX scheduling Til Death right after it, killing the increased momentum Bones has right now? Flip Do Not Disturb and Til Death. Let Do Not Disturb have its chance. Figure it out FOX.
The Bachlorette did very well for ABC. Whether those numbers can continue remains to be seen.
