Considering the fact that the target demographic for DWTS and OTH is similar, it really doesn't surprise me to see OTH's ratings slide. It could be blamed on the lack of the Gossip Girl lead-in, but...I don't think that would have really made much of an effect. The fact is that this was the final performance show for DWTS. SO...it was going to win out, as this is more like American Idol. Personally, I don't understand this country's fixation with these shows, and the only AI show I watch all season is at the end when you see all the really bad contestants so I can watch Simon blast them for their crappiness. BUT...the fact is this, this episode's ratings were doomed from the get-go because of the infatuation with these reality shows.
I think DWTS along with upcoming Idol will follow the same path. They have reached their all time highs. Now they are declining. However, there's a point in which they will bottom out and produce steady ratings. At that level, it will still be among the top tier of ratings for the network.
Idol is in better shape because they have loads of corporate sponsors to help share the cost. DWTS doesn't have these corporate sponsors and has to be experiencing increased episode costs with all these guest stars and extras.

Hmmm. I'm unaware of laws forcing anybody to watch this show at any time.

While BBT is funny, HIMYM is cute, I enjoy both though, and i'm glad they're doing better this year. And Neil Patrick Harris is hella HOT! Too bad he's gay.
Chuck is adorable and heart warming. Heroes is the Transformers of television. Just, no.
PB is good again! This is the best season since the first and i'm entertained watching. It's the only suspensefull series on the air right now. But it's time to wrap things up. TSCC is just plain boring, and the ratings support that. Almost unwatchable.
And GG, while a repeat has the best fashion of television. I wish I had some of Blair's designer clothes!

It... is...?
OTH targets W18-34.
DWTS seems to be a pretty good magnet for A50+
I find that interesting, because I know a lot of young women (from middle school age to post college age) and all of them brag on DWTS. A lot of my middle school daughter's friends talk about it. Maybe we are different here, but that is what I hear. Bottom line is this...all these gimicky win something TV shows are killing me. I miss REAL TV. I am tired of seeing them, and miss the days of old with REAL comedies, real drama, and less crap.
Wow, are you serious? Dancing with the stars averages close to 22mil and samantha who? gets that? if abc is gna seriously air this til the last episode, i suggest airing it none stop til march then put a better comedy behind DWTS! maby In the motherhood, or Better off ted, all i know is that it should be anything but this!! maby scrubs!

I think ABC is finally going to test SW, and make it prove its worth. I thought they would put it on hiatus with DWTS, and bring it back in March, but they are not. It will be on without DWTS for the next few months. I think if it crashes at 6-7 million viewers, ABC looks for another sitcom after DWTS next year. It cannot live on whatever 55% of what DWTS gives it forever.

Well, DWTS has such a great audience that i bet a lot of W18-34 watch it too although clearly it's not the main demographic

As much as I would like to make excuses for OTH, as I love it, it was always supposed to be the mid-season ender last night before the hiatus. The only change I was aware of what that from everything I heard, CMM's episode was supposed to lead off into the mid-season finale.
Since they only ordered 7 more episodes, it looks like ABC is planning on ending SW in March for this year. That would mean a new comedy would fill in after DWTS. In the Motherhood or Cougar Town are probably the most likely candidates. If this new comedy has better retention than SW, I think the new comedy will keep its spot afer DWTS. SW would start another comedy block.

I think ABC is testing SW to see how it does on its own to see if it can anchor another comedy block. I think it will fail miserably. If I had to predict SW gets about 7 million viewers without DWTS. It got 6-7 million the once or twice it aired without DWTS last year, and ABC quickly pulled it until March when DWTS returned.
