Prime-Time Ratings:
Wednesday 1/31/07

The following results are based on the fast national ratings (Live Plus Same Day data)

-Total Viewers:
Fox: 22.01 million, CBS: 9.62, NBC: 9.37, ABC: 5.92, CW: 2.82

-Adults 18-49:
Fox: 8.8 rating/22 share, NBC: 3.0/ 8, CBS: 2.8/ 7, ABC: 2.1/ 5, CW: 1.4/ 3

----------

-Yesterday’s Winners:
Bones (Fox), American Idol (Fox), CSI: NY R – 10 p.m. (CBS), Medium (NBC)

-Honorable Mention:
Deal or No Deal (NBC)

-Yesterday’s Losers (excluding repeats):
The Knights of Prosperity (ABC), Friday Night Lights (NBC), According to Jim (ABC), In Case of Emergency (ABC)

-Ratings Breakdown:
Fox, as expected, led the midweek troops by epic proportions on the strength of Bones and American Idol. Bones opened the evening with a healthy – and dominant – 12.56 million viewers and a 4.3 rating/11 share among adults 18-49, building in the second half-hour by a noticeable 1.62 million viewers (11.75 to 13.37 million) and 18 percent among adults 18-49 (3.9/10 to 4.6/12). That could be, no doubt, a reflection of what you would call the American Idol pre tune-in factor.

Second in the 8 p.m. hour was a repeat of CBS’ CSI: NY at 8.55 million viewers and a 2.6/ 7 among adults 18-49. Although ABC rearranged its Wednesday sitcom line-up in the hopes of fueling interest in The Knights of Prosperity, the recently introduced sitcom plummeted to 5.25 million viewers (#4) and a last-place 2.0/ 5 among adults 18-49 at 8:30 p.m. Retention for The Knights of Prosperity out of lead-in George Lopez (Viewers: #3, 7.82 million; A18-49: #2, 2.8/ 8) was just 67 percent in total viewers and 71 percent among adults 18-49.

Also at 8 p.m. was NBC’s recently relocated Friday Night Lights (Viewers: #4, 6.86 million; A18-49: #3, 2.5/ 7) and the CW’s consistent Beauty and the Geek (Viewers: #5, 4.07 million; A18-49: #5, 2.1/ 5).

Fox’s American Idol, of course, went through the roof at 9 p.m., with the one-hour edition at a whopping 31.45 million viewers and a 13.4/31 among adults 18-49. Comparably, that built from lead-in Bones by a mammoth 18.89 million viewers and 212 percent among adults 18-49. In the distant No. 2 spot was NBC’s Deal or No Deal, with 11.42 million viewers and a 3.1/ 8 among adults 18-49, followed by a repeat of CBS’ Criminal Minds at 9.71 million viewers and a 2.7/ 6 in the demo. Worth positively noting for Deal or No Deal was growth out of Friday Night Lights of a considerable 4.56 million viewers and 24 percent among adults 18-49.

Unfortunately, there was not much audience left in the 9 p.m. hour for ABC sitcoms According to Jim (Viewers: #4, 5.75 million; A18-49: #4, 2.2/ 5) and In Case of Emergency (Viewers: #4, 4.57 million; A18-49: #4, 1.8/ 4) and a repeat of the CW’s One Tree Hill (Viewers: #5, 1.56 million; A18-49: #5, 0.8/ 2). Do the math, and comparably American Idol beat the five competing networks combined.

At 10 p.m., NBC’s Medium and a repeat of CBS’ CSI: NY shared leadership as follows:

CSI: NY R (CBS)
Viewers: 10.61 million (#1), A18-49: 3.2/ 9 (#2)

Medium (NBC)
Viewers: 9.83 million (#2), A18-49: 3.5/ 9 (#1)

Growth for Medium out of Deal or No Deal of 13 percent among adults 18-49 lands it in the winner’s circle for the first time this season.

Third in the 10 p.m. hour was ABC’s Primetime Live (Viewers: #3, 6.05 million; A18-49: #3, 2.1/ 6), which still deserves some brownie points for building out of lead-in In Case of Emergency by 1.48 million viewers and 17 percent among adults 18-49.

Still curious as to what happens when Lost returns at 10pm.

And still marvelling at what a quiet little success story Bones has turned out to be.

Just one more successful show, and David Boreanaz becomes one of the TV Immortals.

I mean, he's nowhere near as big as Bixby or Landon, but he's getting up there.

I think Lost is going to drop to about 13 million viewers with a mid-5 rating among adults 18-49.

Good for Bones and Medium! They're both unique shows that have put an interesting spin on the procedural element, ESPECIALLY Medium.

I think Medium is one of the most underrated shows on television right now. Last night's episode started with the family living as dolls in a doll house. It was interesting, and more importantly, FUN and SMART!

Marc, Why do you think Lost will drop so far to 13 million? Last year when it went directly against Idol it did far better than that. At 10PM the competition is much weaker. I still believe CSI NY only does well because of the lack of competition. I don't see any reason why Lost can not come closer to 18 million. Are you thinking there will be such a dropoff becuase people have forgotten about it?

Man - he was in a lot, but I can only recall Vegas being successful. I remember he was in one with Faye Dunaway that lasted about 4 weeks....

Last night's Bones was a fabulous hour of television.

What were its usual numbers in the fall? Even with Idol pre-tune-in in the 8:30pm half-hour, the show seems like it was up a lot (numbers I have place it in the high-eleven millions in the first half-hour). Hurrah for Bones.

I will never understand why this show didn't blossom like House did last year when it was after Idol (albeit against Lost). And I also don't understand why it doesn't seem to appeal to more viewers of the CSIs or Criminal Minds, etc. It's no gorier than they are. And it has the amazing on-screen chemistry of Boreanaz (who would probably be able to create on-screen chemistry with a stump of wood) and Emily Deschanel (sp?)

Assuming that its lead-in is In Case of Emergency (Viewers: #4, 4.57 million; A18-49: #4, 1.8/ 4), Lost is in trouble. Just look at what's happened to ER since they put 30 Rick before it.

Also Ted Danson, and James Garner. But yeah, Urich is in a class by himself. Only I don't like any of his shows. Well, Spenser wasn't too bad.

Of course he was in so many series because most of them failed rather quickly or, in the case of Soap, he was dropped rather quickly. (How can we forget the big "Who Killed Peter" trial of the first season. I still remember that Peter was stabbed, shot, strangled, suffocated and bludgeoned. Four Ss and a B. Smiler )

I'd have to say that Spenser: For Hire was his most successful series. It lasted 3 seasons like Vega$, but Spenser spawned TV movie sequels and a short-lived spinoff (A Man Called Hawk).

I dont think even Vegas was THAT succesful, lasting only about three or four years. I think he also got three years out of Spencer, which was actually a really good show.
