Prime-Time Ratings:
Monday 1/29/07

The following results are based on the fast national ratings (Live Plus Same Day data)

-Total Viewers:
NBC: 12.46 million, Fox: 11.98, CBS: 10.65, ABC: 7.48, CW: 2.43

-Adults 18-49:
Fox: 4.8 rating/12 share, NBC: 4.6/11, CBS: 3.2/ 8, ABC: 3.1/ 8, CW: 1.1/ 3

----------

-Yesterday’s Winners:
Deal or No Deal (NBC), Heroes (NBC), 24 (Fox), CSI: Miami R (CBS)

-Honorable Mention:
Prison Break (Fox)

-Yesterday’s Losers (excluding repeats):
Everybody Hates Chris (CW), All of Us (CW), Girlfriends (CW), The Game (CW), Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip (NBC), What About Brian (ABC)

----------

-Ratings Breakdown:
With CBS in repeats, it was the battle of NBC versus Fox, with NBC the most-watched network and Fox No. 1 among adults 18-49 -- two-tenths of a rating point (or four percent) above NBC. Had Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip not dropped the ratings’ ball at 10 p.m., NBC would have been guaranteed victory in both categories based on the strength of Deal or No Deal and Heroes.

Beginning with 8 p.m., NBC’s aforementioned Deal or No Deal opened the evening with a dominant 16.86 million viewers and a 4.8 rating/12 share among adults 18-49. Fox’s Prison Break was a comfortable second, with 9.91 million viewers and a 4.1/11 among adults 18-49 -- just 15 percent below Deal or No Deal in the demo.

Third in the in the 8 p.m. hour was a repeat of ABC’s Wife Swap (Viewers: 7.99 million; A18-49: 3.2/ 8), followed by repeats of CBS’ How I Met Your Mother (Viewers: 7.72 million; A18-49: 2.7/ 7) and The Class (Viewers: 6.57 million; A18-49: 2.1/ 5), and the CW’s disappointing Everybody Hates Chris (Viewers: 2.76 million; A18-49: 1.1/ 3) and All of Us (Viewers: 2.36 million; A18-49: 1.0/ 3). Comparably, original episodes of the CW’s sitcoms were only on par with repeats of the comedy block on the year-ago night.

At 9 p.m., leadership was mixed between NBC’s Heroes and Fox’s 24. Heroes won the hour among adults 18-49 (6.1/14) with a second-place finish in total viewers (13.57 million); while 24 was the most-watched (14.05 million) and a competitive second among adults 18-49 (5.4/12). Needless to say, both shows are “winners.”

Also in the 9 p.m. hour were repeats of CBS’ Two and a Half Men (Viewers: 12.68 million; A18-49: #3t, 3.5/ 8) and The New Adventures of Old Christine (Viewers: #3, 10.10 million; A18-49: #4, 2.9/ 7), ABC’s Supernanny (Viewers: #4, 8.74 million; A18-49: #3, 3.5/ 8), and CW sitcoms Girlfriends (Viewers: #5, 2.35 million; A18-49: #5, 1.0/ 2) and The Game (Viewers: #5, 2.26 million; A18-49: #5, 1.1/ 2). Old Christine is actually heading to hiatus until March 12, when it moves into the 8:30 p.m. half hour (out of How I Met Your Mother). Look for the debut of CBS comedy The Rules of Engagement (with the grating David Spade) next Monday at 9:30 p.m.

At 10 p.m., a repeat of CBS’ CSI: Miami was more than enough to still win the hour, with 13.43 million viewers and a 3.9/10 among adults 18-49. Second was NBC’s struggling Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip (Viewers: 6.95 million; A18-49: 3.0/ 8), which held only 49 percent of its Heroes lead-in among adults 18-49, followed by ABC’s What About Brian at 5.71 million viewers and a 2.7/ 7 in the demo. Considering that ABC cut the episode order of What About Brian from 22 to 19, the axe is getting ready to swing.

Has the episode order officially been cut for What about brian? ABC has made no official remark. It is an excellent show. It needs a different time slot. Give it another try out of Grey's Anatomy.
Brian needs some more advertising. The president of ABC had said he really liked the show at one point and that was why it got a full season.
It really is a great cast.

Wow, 10:00 at ABC and NBC is a wasteland. Brain's #s continue to be pitiful, and those are Studio 60's lowest #s, yet. And all of this against a repeat of CSI: Miami and no Monday Night Football.

Maybe TBS should start airing reruns of My Boys at this time to air until it resumes in the summer. Or i TV or CMT could air Mamas Family reruns.

What about those rising demo numbers?

The 18-49 demo numbers for the last four What About Brian airings are:
2.0, 2.2, 2.6, 2.7

Last night's episode had a brushfire of sorts, and swept away some of the new characters and plot tangents of the last two months to take the show back to it's core roots centred around the luminous Marjorie, and clear the decks for Miss Tiffani Thiessen to join the cast.

Don't count this show out yet. The short-order of 19 episodes may not have the same ignominious Alias-final-19 outcome. It may just be a show that needs a more compatible non-reality lead-in.

If ABC does let this gemstone fall from the pouch, of all the potential network discards that may floating around at the time of upfronts, this is the one show that The CW should have renewal contracts ready for signature. It over-delivers on their 18-34 female target, and it will capture the hearts of the WB's Felicity audiences.

I am one of few who actually enjoys What about Brian? but I also cant help but be dismayed by its horrible numbers. I actually think that if abc were smart, that they will put on a new show in this time slot once Dancing returns. If Brian has not been able to find an audience after almost a year, I really dont think that it will now, just let it go gracefully. I have heard great things about October Road and feel like this would be a great show to lead out of Dancing.

Marc, I'm not sure if this question has already been answered, but do these numbers include the college ratings? Or will those only be included in the final numbers?

I actually like Brian as well. And the rise in the demo is noted. But 5.71 million total viewers against a repeat of CSI: Miami and a weak Studio 60 isn't going to cut it, I would guess.

This has my vote for funniest paragraph on this thread. And possibly any thread.

Brian and Studio are cronyism in action.
Who wants to go tell JJ and Sorko that their shows suck?

JJ just got like 60 mill to crank out more of this stuff too. And yet, it just ain;t gonna happen. Creatively crushed by cash.

The fact that 24 won in total viewers, but not in the demo, continues to prove a point that I - and many others - tried to make a few weeks ago -- 24 ALSO has an audience of older folks who enjoy the action/suspense. No one said it wasn't a male-strong drama or an older-skewing show, but since 24 got a 5.4 in the demo, while Heroes grabbed a 6.1, is pure evidence. But, obviously, a 5.4 or 24 is still EXTRMELY worthy of accolades and very impressive; I'm not doubting that! Just trying to emphasize something that some people were hesitant to acknowledge a few weeks ago.

A 2.7 still isn't very strong - especially when the series didn't face an original CSI:Miami. It's probably the 5.7 million that's troubling to ABC - as it should be.

Sure, a 2.7 isn't bad for a show that's grabbing only 5.7 million, but those numbers should be MUCH MUCH higher given the little competition (weak Studio 60 and CSI:Miami repeat). Trimming the episode order was smart.

Worse than that--who wants to tell the network honchos that they backed the wrong horse?

Mistakes have a way of perpetuating themselves, because powerful people hate admitting they screwed up. Last week's SOTU was a prime example. Wink
