Any reaction to these numbers?

I think CBS will win the week because they will get a huge boost from Saturday NFL playoffs. FOX has a bit of football in Sunday primetime, but their Friday and Saturday will hurt the 18-49 numbers too much.

13 shows were on the major nets last night. "ER" finished 6th in total viewers and 4th in the demo, (handily beating its competition AND every other NBC show in the demo).

It also finished higher than NBC's season to date averages (8.9 million viewers, 3.3/9 in the 18-49. (And that counts in NFL Sunday night football, of course.)

So a glib and know-it-all remark might play well here, but the facts are, by the loowered standards of NBC, that "ER" is doing a bit better than the average program the network it offering. It's 3.5 last night is also ahead of any network's season-do-date 18-49 average. And "ER's" ratings performance is far ahead of the critically acclaimed NBC Thursday night comedy block.

Lots of things in this world might be labeled pathetic. But "ER" and its still decent ratings just isn't one of them.

Well, I'm still sticking to my opinion, which is, the show is a loser if it can't hold its audiance, meaning something has gone wrong.

There's a reason for Marc's comments.

Justin - then let's call 60 Minutes a loser every week. It finishes fourth 18-49 and is down from the 30 million viewers it had in the 1980's.

ER is being penalized because of its longevity. Isn't Law & Order down to its early seasons? That got labeled a winner...

ER is probably going to finish top 20 18-49 this week. Sounds like a winner to me.

ER was the No. 3 show for original programming last night 18-49 behind CSI and Grey's...

Sounds like a winner to me.

Wanna know something funny? If you look at the post 1 year ago for Thursday night 1/11/07, Marc was calling for ER to be retired then as well.

From a business perspective, I think ER's biggest problem (and I still watch it) is that it is still an expensive show with an expensive cast. Sure, it's numbers are pretty good. And, NBC may not be able to replace it with something that will draw ER's audience or demo--though they should be able to get an audience if ABC keeps tanking in the slot. Still, a lower rated replacement may be more profitable if it costs a lot less to license, especially if it can be rerun.

I think that was probably part of the reasoning in keeping L&O and Medium: they did not see a more profitable replacement. As in baseball, the question is value over replacement show.

What is your favorite crossover episodes in TV history? Among my favorites were when Archie Bunker and Maude would tangle with each other; or when "Happy Days" and "Laverne & Shirley" casts would visit each other.

What shows on the networks would you like to see cross paths? How would you see those encounters playing out?

If NBC does dump ER, and goes through several stinkers in that spot, those numbers and the 8 mil license fee won't seem so bad. Given the track record of NBC, (other than Heroes) I think they should have something to move there before they go that route. It's not like 30 Rock and Scrubs are providing a great launch pad. And promoting a new show is expensive, Er does that number and they don't have to spend any money or promo time on it

The listings never carry it to 10:01, but if you actually watch the show, it starts at 10:01.

I believe Without a Trace was on at 10:00pm. Your numbers say :01 every week, and that's never the case.

Just saying.

Off the top of my head these 10pm Shows pull MORE than 10 million each week.

CSI: Miami
CSI: NY
Without A Trace
Boston Legal
Shark
Law & Order
Law & Order: SVU
Brothers & Sister

With exception of Numb3rs (a Friday Show) most of the remaining 10pm shows that draw LESS thw 10 million are, at best, considered borderline renewal for next season. (DSM, Journeyman, Cane, Life, Big Shots, Casmier Mafia, Las Vegas)

FOX's Friday won't be too bad. Last week Bones drew a 1.7 in the Demo, and HOUSE drew a 2.3.

Their Saturday demos are usually around a 2, despite football being on.

They wont drop to far, as ABC and NBC will.

Of those, Las Vegas is probably the most likely to get renewed, but it would not surprise me to see them all cancelled.

Aside form your viewers comparison, DEMO is also important. ER performs even better when looking at demo. It is by no means the best show out there, but once again NBC is faced with lots of empty slots to fill and only so many shows in development. Then again, maybe NBC will just give up on scripted programming and go with an almost all DoND lineup mixed with a few hours of The Biggest Loser, American Gladiators, Apprentice, and such.

A 2 isn't exactly a good number even if it held up. I doubt they can hold up as well vs. professional playoff football as against college ball, though. Still, CBS may be looking at a 10 for their Saturday demo.
