They'll just let the scripts run out at the new year and stop airing them--put on game shows and the like in their place. Soap operas as we know them may well be over.
That and the fact that the viewer reaction last time was overwhelmingly negative.
I grant though that many of the soaps were already in genuine danger pre-strike. IMO, at least half of them could fold up by decade's end.

Which is truly a tragedy. I remember back in the day when soaps used to pull huge numbers. I think Y/R used to get in the 12 range. Now, it's lucky if it pulls a 5.

Originally posted by songstolove: So what does this strike mean for shows "on the bubble" (Journeyman, K-Ville, Life etc.)?
I'm expecting the strike to last awhile which would mean that they wouldn't be able to have a back nine ordered. Would they be canceled as soon as the net's burn off the episodes that have been produced?
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but those shows wouldn't have the back nine ordered without a strike. With the strike, they're all probably lucky enough to not be cancelled before the nets burn off all the episodes already produced.
As for bad-buzzworthy shows like "Swingtown," which had just started production and barely has one whole episode in the can, what the strike means, is probable cancellation.
Not bad news for me, I don't watch any of them. I really don't like this TV season.
For some soaps, like the ABC ones (and others), doesn't the reairing on Soapnet make an impact on the overall numbers? And DVR's too of course.

The only thing is that the second season premiere did way better than the rest of the season. And not just in the normal season-premieres-are-higher-rated way. (I'm talking about just the Monday numbers, not the Monday plus repeat numbers.)

Like everything the POS known as WTK-V writes here, this IR is ALoC.

Remind me: how many hours per week is BB stuffed down our throats over the summer? It does not get any more 'overkill' than BB.
