-Ratings Breakdown:
ABC and CBS shared bragging rights on Monday, with the home of Dancing With the Stars the most-watched network and CBS first among adults 18-49. The CW dominated among target women 18-34 and females 12-34.
A 90-minute edition of ABC’s Dancing With the Stars took center stage, of course, with 17.66 million viewers and a 4.0/10 among adults 18-49 from 8-9:30 p.m. Here is the half-hour breakdown:
Dancing With the Stars (ABC)
8:00 p.m. - Viewers: 16.35 million (#1), A18-49: 3.7/10 (#1)
8:30 p.m. – Viewers: 18.35 million (#1), A18-49: 4.1/10 (#1)
9:00 p.m. – Viewers: 18.29 million (#1), A18-49: 4.2/10 (#2)
Although Rocco DiSpirito is certain to be exiting tonight, personally I have had just about enough of goofy Cloris Leachman. Haven’t you? All I can say is…”Phyllis…it sure isn’t you!!!”
Dancing With the Stars led into the second season-premiere of Samantha Who? (Viewers: #1, 11.70 million; A18-49: #3, 3.1/ 7), followed by the final season of tired Boston Legal at 8.18 million viewers (#2) and a fourth-place 2.1/ 8 among adults 18-49. While Samantha Who? was the most-watched show at 9:30 p.m., retention out of the last half-hour of Dancing With the Stars was just 64 percent in total viewers and 74 percent among adults 18-49. And one year earlier, the Christina Applegate sitcom opened with a heftier 14.42 million viewers and a 4.5/10 among adults 18-49 (on Oct. 15, 2007).
Over at CBS, the weak link remains freshman sitcom Worst Week, which dipped by 4.79 million viewers and 38 percent among adults 18-49 out of Two and a Half Men this week (but did get a minor boost from one week earlier by not facing Dancing With the Stars). Both The Big Bang Theory and How I Met Your Mother deserve accolades, meanwhile, for the continued strength among adults 18-49.
Monday
8:00 p.m. The Big Bang Theory – Viewers: 9.36 million (#2), A18-49: 3.6/10 (#2)
8:30 p.m. How I Met Your Mother – Viewers: 9.14 million (#2), A18-49: 3.8/10 (#2)
9:00 p.m. Two and a Half Men – Viewers: 14.57 million (#2), A18-49: 5.3/12 (#1)
9:30 p.m. Worst Week – Viewers: 9.78 million (#2), A18-49: 3.3/ 8 (#2)
10:00 p.m. CSI: Miami – Viewers: 13.00 million (#1), A18-49: 3.9/10 (#1)
The biggest surprise was a 21 percent dip for CSI: Miami from the comparable year-ago evening (Viewers: 15.59 million; A18-49: 4.8/12). on Oct. 15, 2007).
In series-premiere news, NBC drama My Own Worst Enemy got off to a sluggish start, with 7.30 million viewers and a 3.0/ 8 among adults 18-49. But comparably, that was an improvement from year-ago failed occupant Journeyman (Viewers: 6.75 million; A18-49: 2.7/ 7 on Oct. 15, 2007). And the retention out of the second half of lead-in Heroes (Viewers: 9.01 million; A18-49: 4.4/10) was not terrible at 81 percent in viewers and 68 percent among adults 18-49. But what could be concerning is a loss of audience at 10:30 p.m. of 690,000 viewers (7.64 to 6.95 million) and six percent among adults 18-49 (3.1/ 8 to 2.9/ 7).
Overall, Heroes averaged 8.63 million viewers (#3) and a 4.2/10 among adults 18-49 (#2) -- which dipped considerably from one year earlier (Viewers: 11.41 million; A18-49: 5.2/12 on Oct. 15, 2007). Also on NBC was fading Chuck, with a fourth-place finish in both total viewers (6.01 million) and adults 18-49 (2.3/ 6) from 8-9 p.m.
Over at Fox, game four of the NLCS Championship Series could not compete at 7.28 million viewers (#4) and a 2.4/ 6 among adults 18-49 (#4) in primetime.
Capping off Monday was CW duo Gossip Girl (Viewers: #5, 3.34 million; A18-49: #5, 1.6/ 4) and One Tree Hill (Viewers: #5, 3.43 million; A18-49: #5, 1.7/ 4), which built from the year-ago rotation of Everybody Hates Chris, Aliens in America, Girlfriends and The Game by an average of 212,000 viewers and 70 percent among adults 18-49. In their target demos, both finished second in their time periods among women 18-34 (Gossip Girl: 3.4/ 9, One Tree Hill: 3.9/10). And One Tree Hill, in particular, ranked first in the 9 p.m. hour among females 12-34 (3.6/ 9), and second in adults 18-34 (2.6/ 7 – tie) and persons 12-34 (2.4/ 6). Too bad the CW is not like this every night.
