Prime-Time Ratings:
Friday 10/19/07

The following results are based on the fast affiliate ratings (Live Plus Same Day data)

-Total Viewers:
CBS: 8.81 million, ABC: 7.61, NBC: 7.44, CW: 4.66, Fox: 3.57

-Adults 18-49:
CBS: 2.4 rating/ 8 share, NBC: 2.0/ 7, ABC: 1.8/ 6, Fox: 1.5/ 5, CW: 1.4/ 5

----------

Note: Any prior rating results are based on the final nationals. Also, since the level of DVR penetration has increased from 9 percent in early 2006-07 to approximately 20 percent at present, the overall results may be negatively impacted.

----------

-Friday’s Winners:
(Keep in mind that the expectations are lower on this HUT challenged evening)
Ghost Whisperer (CBS), Deal or No Deal (NBC), Women’s Murder Club (ABC), Numb3rs (CBS)

-Honorable Mention:
Moonlight (CBS), Friday Night Smackdown! (CW)

-Friday’s Losers:
The Next Great American Band (Fox), 20/20 (ABC), Men in Trees (ABC)

----------

-Ratings Breakdown:
CBS led this fourth Friday of the 2007-08 season, with a still modest finish in total viewers and adults 18-49. The reality of Friday remains lower HUT levels -- more people seem to be out ringing in the new weekend. Tied for the No.2 and 3 spots were ABC and NBC, followed by consistent Friday Night Smackdown! on the CW, and the disappointing two-hour series-premiere of Fox’s The Next Great American Band.

The Next Great American Band opened with just 3.57 million viewers (#5) and a 1.5 rating/5 share among adults 18-49 (#4) from 8-10 p.m. One year earlier, Fox had a similarly lackluster performance with back-to-back episodes of Trading Spouses at 3.46 million viewers and a 1.4/ 5 in the demo on Friday, Oct. 20, 2006. The last thing I think any of us need, particularly at the end of a long work week, is to hear Australian judge Ian “Dicko” Dickson speak to the contestants like they are dirt. Please, go back to Australia!

Tied for first in the 8 p.m. hour was NBC’s Deal or No Deal and CBS’ Ghost Whisperer as follows:

Friday 8 p.m.
Deal or No Deal (NBC)
Viewers: 9.32 million (#1), A18-49: 2.0/ 7 (#2)

Ghost Whisperer (CBS)
Viewers: 8.92 million (#2), A18-49: 2.4/ 9 (#1)

One year earlier, Jennifer Love Hewitt talking to dead people averaged 10.27 million viewers and a 3.0/11 among adults 18-49. And Deal or No Deal scored 11.07 million viewers and a 2.9/10 in the demo.

Capping off 8-9 p.m. was ABC’s relocated 20/20 at a disappointing 6.75 million viewers (#3) and a 1.7/ 6 among adults 18-49 (1.7/ 6), and the first half of the CW’s Friday Night Smackdown! (Viewers: #4: 4.17 million; A18-49: #5, 1.2/ 4). Overall, Smackdown! averaged 4.66 million viewers and a 1.4/ 5 in the demo from 8-10 p.m., which for this network is a real positive.

Week two of ABC’s Women’s Murder Club and CBS’ also recently launched Moonlight shared dominance in the 9 p.m. hour as follows:

Friday 9 p.m.
Women’s Murder Club (ABC)
Viewers: 9.67 million (#1), A18-49: 2.0/ 6 (#2)

Moonlight (CBS)
Viewers: 7.78 million (#2), A18-49: 2.1/ 7 (#1)

The good news for Women’s Murder Club was a) retention from last Friday’s debut (Viewers: 10.85 million; A18-49: 2.5/ 8 on Oct. 19, 2007) of 89 percent in viewers and 80 percent among adults 18-49; and b) growth from year-ago occupant Men in Trees (Viewers: 6.24 million; A18-49: 1.7/ 5 on Oct. 20, 2006) of 3.43 million viewers and 18 percent in the demo.

Third in the hour was NBC’s relocated Friday Night Lights at a depressed 5.48 million viewers and a 1.9/ 6 in the demo. As I have said over and over again, if only they would stop the constant camera movement more viewers might actually tune in.

CBS moved into the sole winning spot at 10 p.m., care of underrated Numb3rs at 9.72 million viewers and a 2.7/ 9 among adults 18-49. Second was NBC’s veteran Las Vegas (Viewers: 7.51 million; A18-49: 2.1/ 7), followed by ABC’s struggling Men in Trees (Viewers: 6.42 million; A18-49: 1.7’/ 5). One year earlier, ABC’s 20/20 averaged 7.59 million viewers and a 2.4/ 8 in the demo in the hour. What a shame more viewers have not found the quirky, appealing Men in Trees.

If Moonlight gets a full season with these numbers i think the future of fridays is bleak. Very bleak.
Last year with these numbers Moonlight would've been axed by now

Nice to see Moonlight rebound somewhat from last week.

I really enjoyed last nights episode, it was definitely their best so far, at least for me.

Yikes, the Next Great American Band really did bomb out. Repeats of K-Ville on the Friday timeslot were 3.3 million and 1.6 in the demos. I hate to see how it performs second week out. FOX should just cut it now and start airing repeats and game shows.

Men In Trees is just dead. Last year, the appeal wasn't there, and to put it on a dead night just killed the show. Something will be replacing it by January.

FNL at least stabilized in the 5.5 million range. It's demos went up. Not fantastic news but at least it isn't deflating anymore. Disagree about the shaky camera angles. I like it.

WMC will be getting that full season renewal soon. Great hold from the first week.

Numbers and Ghost Whisperer is doing well. Numbers is absolutely dominating it's time slot. I still think Moonlight should be doing better considering it's lead and what follows. Surely, it's numbers are padded a bit because of spill over or anticipation.

WWE Smackdown saves the CW. It's absolutely solid week after week and got almost as many viewers as ANTM this week.

I think a full season order for Moonlight with these numbers is very premature.

Marc do you think NBC will stick by Friday Night Lights for a full season order?

I mean with or without the camera constant movement, the show is by far the best dramatic hour on television.

To aid 20/20 ABC should:

Cancel TREES and move DIRTY SEXY MONEY from Wed
to after MURDER CLUB-which seems like would be a good fit.

BIG SHOTS then could go to WED at 10 and maybe find and audience

and finally put 20/20 after GRAYS as an alternative to people who do not want to watch the scripted TV on NBC and CBS in that hour.

You think it'll come after just two airings? I agree the drop-off was pretty small, and 9+ million is basically a hit on Friday night, but this seems quick, especially since the demo fell off so much.

Emmy, have you seen Connie Britton lately? She’s absolutely riveting.

Hear, hear! Have never loved this show as much as critics (though a lot of critics are jumping ship this year), but Britton has always been just outstanding.

If FNL stays in 2.0 territory in the demo, it's probably not going to get yanked, at least not in the next couple months. It's a competitive third in the demo.

As for Band, it skewed young, but this has to be considered a big disappointment. Fox just can't get anything at all going on Fridays. Don't know what they can do.

STANDINGS | Congrats to week 11 winner Douglas! | Winter/Spring 2010 Top 5 (thru 3/17):
1. Douglas (3228) 2. spotupj (3032) 3. yankeesrj12 (2612) 4. Ammit (2480) 5. WlcmZ.Texas (2472)

The key is.. it ain't last year..... crazy what a difference a year makes.... Even still with a little DVR help these shows look a lot better minus MIT... Will never understand why they have it on at 10PM on a Friday... if anything put it on at 8PM. The curious scheduling just feels like someone with a lot of power at ABC loves the show and someone with a lot of scheduling power hates the show. Still think it upticks a bit when they get to the 'new ( as in not filmed 9 months ago) episodes...

Wow TNGAB hit with a thud. I thought it might get sampled by at least some of those millions of non-demo Idol viewers. I guess not. I have to admit that I only made it through half. The host and judges are annoying. I guess TNGAB will become this falls Pirate Master.

Is there a more dominate time period show that Numb3ers? It wins by a large margin in both demo and viewers every week. Keeps me wondering what it would do after the Unit.

I think that NBC should move FNL to USA ASAP. It could find a home there and be a hit on that network for years. It's on life support at NBC and only because it's critically praised. It wont ever be more than it is ratings wise.

For what it's worth I LOVE the show... just don't think it makes good TV for the typical American viewer...

The problem with FOX Fridays is that recently it's been the home of left overs, and cheap reality fare. They need to realize that the Friday audience is of the most part a little older that tends to go for more scripted fare. They need to develop a lineup that targets those demos. That being said, FOX probably won't attempt it. FOX seems content on using Friday as a dumping ground and really isn't trying to be competitive.

My how depressing Friday's have become. I guess Moonlight deserves some kudos for winning its hour in the demo, but those numbers stink as a whole. CBS would've axed that puppy in a minute last year. ABC gets kudos for finding Womens Murder Club. Men in Trees' audience is likely one of those that are DVRing it because they're out on Friday (it seems a bit younger skewing than its lead in to be honest despite the demo drop). Here's to ABC switching Trees and 20/20. 20/20 would hold more of that lead in and Trees would do no worse at 8pm imo.

Not surprised American Band flopped- the audience isn't home.

good for WMC, but the 18-49 demo isnt as good as I hoped, anyways I really like the show and I wish they would just switch 20/20 with MIT already, Its majorly affecting the ratings, and I agree with Marc, the camera shaking is annoying to some people, I got used to it after 12 episodes last season, and now I like it, except many people will just be annoyed and not even give it a chance, but the way its shot does somehow makes it more real and realistic
