Just curious - What hit shows ABC was airing during that period of success?
I agree -- I was just thinking about how a Stephen King mini-series would be excellent counterprogramming to AI's premiere next season. I went back and looked, and my favorite Stephen King miniseries, The Stand got killer ratings (pun intended ), with 33 million viewers it was the 2nd most watched tv show, beating shows like Seinfeld. In that week, ABC had 9 of the top 10 shows... That was in the mid-90s, and the last time ABC finished 1st for an entire season...

Ironically, since we're talking about their Tuesday woes, that was the peak of their Tuesday success: they relied on top-10 Tuesday sitcoms Home Improvement, Roseanne, Coach, and Grace Under Fire and 10pm cop show NYPD Blue. It was ABC's highly-successful version of NBC's Must-See TV Thursdays...
WOW! I would of never thought AI would decrease. Thats a first isnt it? Does anyone have the breakdowns for AI? However I only watched an hour of it last night. I felt like watching The Biggest Loser last night instead

Considering it had reduced competition than previous years, I think Marc is right that it has peaked. And if people on here are right that no one stood out from the masses of mediocrity, this could be a long season. Plus the word is spreading that Taylor Hicks and Ruben were dropped from their label, that Jordin Sparks record is not doing well, etc. Only Kelly Clarkson and the country girl have done well as winners. Daughtry is doing extremely well after 4th, Clay Aiken did good in 2nd, and Jennifer Hudson only shows how the 5th season went so horribly wrong (she finished 7th).
Could you imagine if Justin Guirini had won the 1st season instead of Kelly? He would have bombed, and AI may have quickly disappeared after a couple of seasons... The reason it became so huge is that Kelly Clarkson's success validated it, and people took it seriously.
