-Ratings Breakdown: As expected, it was a huge victory for Fox on this third Tuesday of 2008, with the seventh season-premiere of American Idol at a hefty 33.24 million viewers and a 13.8 rating/32 share among adults 18-49 from 8-10 p.m. Comparably, that more than doubled the second most-watched show of the evening, CBS’ NCIS (Viewers: 15.91 million). But year-to-year, American Idol actually dipped by 4.20 million viewers and 13 percent among adults 18-49 from its sixth season-opener on Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2007 (Viewers: 37.44 million; A18-49: 15.8/36). So, at this point it is safe to say that American Idol has officially peaked.
CBS finished a distant, albeit respectable second in viewers and third overall among adults 18-49 with its combination of the aforementioned NCIS (Viewers: #2, 15.91 million; A18-49: #2, 3.0/ 7) and part two of miniseries Comanche Moon (Viewers: #2, 12.48 million; A18-49: #4, 2.4/ 6 from 9-11 p.m.). Two days earlier, Comanche Moon kicked-off with 15.76 million viewers and a 3.3/ 8 in the demo.
Opposite American Idol, NBC’s The Biggest Loser 5 took a hit, with a season-low 7.18 million viewers and a 3.0/ 7 among adults 18-49 from 8-10 p.m. Compared to one week earlier (Viewers: 10.13 million; A18-49: 4.3/11 on Jan. 8), that was a decrease of 2.95 million viewers and 30 percent in the demo. Capping off the evening for NBC was Law & Order: SVU at a dominant 12.14 million viewers and a 4.6/12 among adults 18-49 at 10 p.m. Comparably, that built from the last half-hour of The Biggest Loser 5 (Viewers: 8.27 million; A18-49: 3.4/ 7 at 9:30 p.m.) by a significant 1.86 million viewers and 35 percent in the demo.
ABC remained out of the competitive loop on Tuesday care of two episodes of Just For Laughs (8 p.m. Viewers: #4, 4.52; A18-49: #4, 1.2/ 3; 8:30 p.m. repeat, Viewers: #4, 4.22 million; A18-49: #4, 1.2/ 3), According to Jim (Viewers: #4, 4.06 million; A18-49: #4, 1.2/ 3), a repeat of Carpoolers (Viewers: #4, 3.09 million; A18-49: #4, 0.9/ 2), and a repeat of Boston Legal (Viewers: #4, 7.41 million; A18-49: #3, 2.1/ 6). Start packing, Jim Belushi!
Although the CW’s One Tree Hill (Viewers: #5, 2.74 million; A18-49: #5, 1.3/ 3 was nothing to boast about, it did manage to build from a repeat of Reaper (Viewers: #5, 1.57 million; A18-49: #5, 0.6/ 2 at 8 p.m.) by 1.17 million viewers and 117 percent among adults 18-49. And that is enough to keep it off the list of losers.
I think the numbers for Comanche Moon were pretty good considering it sat on the shelf for so long and then was sent to the slaughter house against AI.
As for AI having peaked, so has mount everest!

I dunno, I think if the Top 24 or Top 12 are as electrifying as season five's crop, Idol could crawl right back up from it's "decline". Especially as the season wears on and there's really nothing else on TV.

Yeah it did what could with CBS really stronger than usual Cane, and with a lead-in which was simply ridicolous. I'm sorry 'cause the episode deserved way better.
And in the end the love you take is equal to the love you make.
If you find my english is bad, it's because I'm italian. :-)

Wow, what a disaster for ABC! But don't let the exclamation make you think I'm the least bit surprised: as soon as I saw this midseason schedule for ABC's Tuesdays a few weeks ago my jaw dropped at how ABC was giving up an entire night. At this point, a test pattern would get higher ratings...
