-Ratings Breakdown:
Excluding The CW, which continues to air encores, there was good news aplenty for the Big 4 networks on this first Tuesday in February. Led by American Idol, Fox won the evening in both total viewers and adults 18-49, but its advantage over CBS was only 790,000 viewers. Ignited by the return of Lost, ABC finished a healthy second overall in the demo, while fourth-place NBC was on the map care of one of its few hits, The Biggest Loser.

Fox opened the evening with American Idol (#1, 24.44 million; A18-49: #1, 8.9 rating/23 share at 8 p.m.), the highest rated show of the evening, followed by the new season of Kitchen Nightmares at 9.27 million viewers (#4) and a second-place 3.9/10 among adults 18-49 at 9 p.m. While Kitchen Nightmares certainly sounds good on paper, retention out of the second-half of lead-in American Idol (Viewers: 25.52 million; A18-49: 9.3/23 at 8:30 p.m.) was only 36 percent in total viewers and 42 percent in the demo.

CBS continues to score on Tuesday care of its successful combination of NCIS (Viewers: #2, 19.11 million; A18-49: #2, 4.3/11), spin-off NCIS: Los Angeles (Viewers: #1, 16.36 million; A18-49: #4, 3.6/ 9) and The Good Wife (Viewers: #1, 12.72 million; A18-49: #3, 2.6/ 7).

In season-premiere news, two episodes of the final season of ABC’s Lost finished second in the two hours in total viewers and first among adults 18-49 as follows:

Lost (ABC)
9:00 p.m. – Viewers: 12.43 million (#2), A18-49: 5.7/14 (#1)
10:00 p.m. – Viewers: 11.75 million (#2), A18-49: 5.5/15 (#1)

Here is the half-hour breakdown:

Lost (ABC)
9:00 p.m. – Viewers: 12.61 million (#2), A18-49: 5.7/14 (#1)
9:30 p.m. – Viewers: 12.25 million (#2), A18-49: 5.6/14 (#1)
10:00 p.m. – Viewers: 11.56 million (#2), A18-49: 5.4/14 (#1)
10:30 p.m. – Viewers: 11.94 million (#2), A18-49: 5.6/15 (#1)

Compared to the two-hour year-ago season opener on Wednesday, Jan. 21, 2009 (Viewers: 11.35 million; A18-49: 5.0/12 from 9-11 p.m., according to the final nationals) this was an increase of 740,000 viewers and 12 percent among adults 18-49.

Earlier in the evening on ABC was clips show Lost: The Final Chapter at a third-place finish in both total viewers (9.93 million) and adults 18-49 (4.1/11) from 8-9 p.m.

Over at NBC, a one-hour repeat of one the network’s few hits, The Biggest Loser, finished fourth at 8 p.m., with 4.98 million viewers and a 1.6/ 4 among adults 18-49. That led into the two-hour original edition at 9.42 million viewers and a 3.7/ 9 in the demo from 9-11 p.m., with a consistent performance in every half hour as follows:

The Biggest Loser (NBC)
9:00 p.m. – Viewers: 9.47 million (#4), A18-49: 3.7/ 9 (#3)
9:30 p.m. – Viewers: 9.65 million (#4), A18-49: 3.7/ 9 (#2)
10:00 p.m. – Viewers: 9.35 million (#3), A18-49: 3.7/ 9 (#2)
10:30 p.m. – Viewers: 9.22 million (#3), A18-49: 3.7/10 (#2)

Considering the severity of the competition, The Biggest Loser is also a “winner.”

The CW capped off this busy Wednesday with repeats of 90210 (Viewers: #5, 873,000; A18-49: #5, 0.3/ 1) and Melrose Place (Viewers: #5, 661,000; A18-49: #5, 0.2/ 1). At present, there is no news on when these dramas will be returning with original episodes. Is Melrose Place still even in original production?

Wow, insanely competitive 10 pm hour as expected. I figured Good wife would take a bit of a hit but not really concerning considering the competition and which it won't be facing again anytime soon.

As good as Lost was last night. It was nowhere near as good as its pilot, which in my opinion, ranks amongst the best pilots ever made for television....ever!!

It was announced quite awhile ago that both would be returning with new episodes on March 9th.

With all the final season of Lost hype I expected more viewers. Didn't lose anyone from last season that's good.

Not to worried. It will gain viewers with dvr and on-demand. Not to mention that it didnt have two big hits as a lead-in.

Great start for LOST. On a very competitive night of television, It is pretty impressive for a returing show (6th year) to score such impressive numbers, especially in the Demos.

This shows that with decent competition The Good Wife cannot sustain a decent demo. It will not be a long lasting series. With NBC, ABC, FX, TNT, and USA all putting up strong shows it could be kept in the 2s for most of the remaining season. See here and compare TGW to last season's cancelled Without A Trace.

Plus, isn't it now the #1 ABC show in 18-49?

Robert, here you are again with your outlandish comments about LOST.

LOST was all over the MAP yesterday in terms of Yahoo buzz meter, Google search, Facebook, and etc. Where was the Good wife? I don't even know this show exists. Guess, how many people are going to be talking about LOST the next day versus TGW? Look at the Demos. Plus, when we get the 7-DAY DVR numbers, LOST is always in the TOP 5 shows.

I don't know what you are complaining about, because it is becoming very silly and redundant. You need to come-up with some new material.
