-Honorable Mention:
Bones (Fox)

-Disappointing:
Private Practice (ABC)

-Yesterday’s Losers (excluding repeats):
Kath & Kim (NBC) -- please NBC, officially cancel this!

----------

-Ratings Breakdown:
CBS led this second Thursday of the February 2009 sweeps, beating No. 2 ABC by 3.94 million viewers and six percent among adults 18-49. Fox and NBC tied for the No. 3 and 4 spots, while the CW finished a distant fifth.

The Eye net opened the night on a normally dominant note, with veteran Survivor: Tocantins at 12.89 million viewers and a 4.1 rating/12 share among adults 18-49 at 8 p.m. (which is right on par with the Micronesia version from one year earlier). As for the show itself, tone it down, Taj. What was that outburst all about?

Second in the 8 p.m. hour was Fox’s underappreciated Bones at a healthy 9.55 million viewers and a 2.8/ 8 in the demo. Also present was ABC’s hiatus-bound Ugly Betty (Viewers: #3, 7.21 million; A18-49: #3, 2.1/ 6), followed by a repeat of My Name Is Earl (Viewers: #4, 4.41 million; A18-49: #4, 1.7/ 5) and the season (or series) finale of the abysmal Kath & Kim (Viewers: #4, 4.00 million; A18-49: #4, 1.7/ 5) on NBC, and already renewed Smallville on the CW (Viewers: #5, 3.72 million; A18-49: #5, 1.6/ 5). Keep in mind that ABC will debut new sitcom Motherhood at 8 p.m. followed by the return of Samantha Who? effective on March 26.

CBS warhorse CSI and Grey’s Anatomy on ABC led the 9 p.m. hour, but both were below average. Take a look:

Thursday 9 p.m.
CSI (CBS)
Viewers: 16.96 million (#1), A18-49: 4.2/10 (#2)

Grey’s Anatomy (ABC)
Viewers: 13.54 million (#2), A18-49: 4.9/12 (#1)

Hell’s Kitchen on Fox and NBC’s The Office and 30 Rock shared the No. 3 and 4 spots as follows:

Thursday 9 p.m.
Hell’s Kitchen (Fox)
Viewers: 7.76 million (#3), A18-49: 3.5/ 9 (#4)

The Office (NBC) – 9 p.m.
Viewers: 7.51 million (#4), A18-49: 4.0/10 (#2t)

30 Rock (NBC) – 9:30 p.m.
Viewers: 6.41 million (#4), A18-49: 3.3/ 8 (#4)

And Supernatural on the CW capped off the 9 p.m. hour with 2.84 million viewers and a 1.1/ 3 among adults 18-49. Comparably, that put retention out of the second half of Smallville (Viewers: 3.84 million; A18-49: 1.6/ 5 at 8:30 p.m.) of 74 percent in total viewers and 69 percent in the demo.

Moving to 10 p.m., NBC’s ER got a boost care of guest spots by former cast members George Clooney, Juliana Margulies and Eriq La Salle. But it still was not enough to beat CBS’ competing Eleventh Hour in total viewers. Take a look:

Thursday 10 p.m.
Eleventh Hour (CBS)
Viewers: 11.78 million (#1), A18-49: 2.8/ 7 (#3)

ER (NBC)
Viewers: 10.71 million (#2), A18-49: 3.9/11 (#1)

Even so, the double-digit growth out of limited 30 Rock lands ER in the winner’s circle. But Eleventh Hour continues to squander the lead-in support from CSI. Don’t forget that CBS mystery Harper’s Island debuts in the hour on April 9.

Rounding off the 10 p.m. time period was ABC’s Private Practice at 9.07 million viewers (#3) and a 3.4/ 9 among adults 18-49 (#2). Comparably, the retention out of the second half of lead-in Grey’s Anatomy (Viewers: 14.01 million; A18-49: 5.2/13 at 9:30 p.m.) of 65 percent in both total viewers and the demo. That should be good enough to warrant a renewal for next season.

After 8 Days of 2009 February Sweep (in March), FOX First in A18-49s, CBS Most Viewed & Tops in Households

After 8 days of the 2009 February Sweep (in March), FOX is well out in front in young adult demo, attracting the most A18-49s with 4.19, with CBS in second place at 2.98, ABC regained third at 2.41, and NBC fell back to fourth in demo with 2.40. At the bottom are the mini-nets starting with Univision at 1.48, The CW at 0.73, and MyNetworkTV at 0.53.

CBS leads in average households, while FOX is second, ABC is third and NBC fourth. Amongst the mini-nets, Univision is fifth, while The CW is sixth and MyNetworkTV just behind in seventh.

In average P2+ viewers, CBS regained bragging rights as most viewed with a 11,856,000 viewer average, with FOX nipping at Tiffany’s heels with a 11,366,000 viewer average, while ABC is third and NBC fourth. Univision is fifth, The CW is sixth, and MyNetworkTV just behind in seventh.

CBS and MyNetworkTV are the only networks showing growth in all key measures of A18-49 demo, households and viewers from last years February Sweep. NBC is up in demo, but down in households and viewers, while ABC is down in demo but up in households and viewers. FOX is down by double digits on all measures, but that is due to the 'Super Bowl' being included in FOX's February Sweep numbers last year.

Overall for the seven networks, after six nights A18-49 demo is down -25% from the 'Super Bowl'-inflated Sweep last year, -13% in households and -19% in P2+ viewers.

The data for this and last year are all final Nielsen numbers, except for the last night of this year which is preliminary data. This year, the February Sweep is being held in March due to the DTV changeover, whereas last years February Sweep included the 'Super Bowl' but was also held during the WGA strike which curtailed original product across some of the networks. Comparison of year-over-year Sweep numbers must be viewed within this context. All Sweep calculations incorporate Nielsen final numbers for primetime programming, Monday to Saturday 8-11 pm, and Sunday 7-11 pm. For daytime over-runs into primetime and primetime run-pasts into latenight (e.g. sports coverage, award shows), only the primetime portion of the program numbers have been factored in. For networks that split programs into multiple segments of sustaining and non-sustaining coverage, the rating for the sustaining portion applies to the entire program broadcast.

Marc, MediaLife is showing an 18-49 rating of 4.9 for Grey's Anatomy (instead of a 4.2, as you show). And you also show that the last 30 minutes was a 5.2, which indicates that its overall rating must be higher than 4.2.

Always enjoy seeing SURVIVOR make the WINNER's LIST. It's been on almost a decade and its still entertaining.

Steven is proving to be a poor pick by Taj for the secret alliance...she needs to get the idol back before he stabs her in the back.

Still wonder why they don't allow Canadian's to be cast. I assume the show is popular up there as well and since Burnett is always looking to stir the pot up for drama maybe he should do an American team pitted against a team from Canada...and it wouldnt' be as controversial as the SURVIVOIR: Race Wars edtion a while back.

Holy Cow...Clooney and Margelies couln't even boost ER passed ELEVENTH HOUR? Shocker.

I hadn't watched ER since around 2001, but tuned in last night to see the returning cast members. It was very satisfying -- everyone dropped back into their roles as though they'd never stopped playing them. If the producers had stayed focused on human-scale stories like the ones from last night, I would have stuck around through the 2000s; it was when they started incorporating helicopter crashes, tanks, and tornadoes that I tuned out.

Disappointing numbers for ER. Clearly the series finale won't do much better. I never liked this show but certinly deserves better for its finale

The demos are saving GA from a being a failure. For now.

It seems like all the 9pm shows were down in the ratings (except maybe Hell's Kitchen). Why do people think they were all down in the ratings?

DST effect with the numbers?

NBC should be used Clooney in a promo. They could have done better than that.

This was the first episode Practice had to hold it's own after the crossover. The numbers don't look different than pre crossover.

I'm guessing Grey's will be picking up over the next few weeks as they FINALLY get into what's been going on with Izzie. Last night was fantastic. A quality from the show that hasn't been there since mid season three.

College basketball conference tournaments (ACC, SEC etc.) no doubt diverted some viewers and preempted others.

YEAH! for ER. ER has completely shown why they've been the most consistent well written drama over the past 15 years and there's no denying. There have been some good offerings from cable but none of them really surpass ER. If it wasn't for ER and St. Elsewhere before that we wouldn't have House or Grey's. Glad to see PP take a backseat to ER as its not their time right now. That episode of ER was the best episode I've seen for any show all season long.

George Clooney = Ratings!

Has FOX become the only smart network outside of the Tiffany Network (CBS)?

They produce back to back nights of good ratings from their procedurals Bones and Lie to Me. You see if you're not on CBS this is how you program procedurals. Steve of ABC are you listening? You need to this with Castle and The Unusuals.

I hope after this season that NBC retools that whole NBC Thursday comedy block. Those numbers are horrendous. Its time for the traditional multi-cams to come back. They just move The Office and 30 Rock to Tuesdays at 9:30pm behind The Biggest Loser.

After ER leaves is in big trouble if Southland or Kings doesn't hit.

It has been reported that Clooney specifically asked that his appearance not be promoted as a condition for his appearance. Otherwise you can be sure it have hyped up the wazoo.
