-Yesterday’s Winners: The 43rd Annual CMA Awards (ABC), Criminal Minds (CBS), Glee (Fox), CSI: NY (CBS)
-Disappointing: America’s Next Top Model (CW)
-Yesterday’s Losers: Mercy (NBC), So You Think You Can Dance (Fox), The Jay Leno Show (NBC)
----------
-Ratings Breakdown: ABC rose to the top of the Wednesday charts care of The 43rd Annual CMA Awards, which averaged a healthy 16.85 million viewers and a 5.2 rating/14 share among adults 18-49 from 8-11 p.m. Comparably, that was up from it’s year-ago performance (Viewers: 15.90 million; A18-49: 5.0/13 on Wednesday, Nov. 12, 2008) by 950,000 viewers and four percent in the demo, leading ABC to its largest Wednesday audience with non-sports programming since Sept. 21, 2005. Here is the half-hour breakdown:
Next was CBS with its combination of The New Adventures of Old Christine (Viewers: #2, 7.57 million; A18-49: #2, 2.2/ 6), compatible Gary Unmarried (Viewers: #2, 7.70 million; A18-49: #2, 2.5/ 6), Criminal Minds (Viewers: #2, 12.26 million; A18-49: #2t, 3.3/ 8) and CSI: NY (Viewers: #2, 13.92 million; A18-49: #2, 3.7/10), which featured part two of the Lawrence Fishburne CSI franchise crossover. In the battle of Criminal Minds versus NBC’s relocated Law & Order: SVU (Viewers: #3, 8.81 million; A18-49: #4, 2.8/ 7), the advantage for Criminal Minds was 3.45 million viewers and 18 percent among adults 18-49 last night. Looking ahead, my prediction is SVU will move back into the Tuesday 10 p.m. hour next season after sure-to-be axed The Jay Leno Show fades away.
Speaking of NBC, full-season-renewed freshman medical drama Mercy kicked-off the night with an uneventful 6.78 million viewers (#3) and a fourth-place 1.8/ 5 among adults 18-49 at 8 p.m., followed by aforementioned Law & Order: SVU (Viewers: #3, 8.81 million: A18-49: #4, 2.8/ 7) and The Jay Leno Show (Viewers: #3, 4.59 million; A18-49: #3, 1.4/ 4) from 9-11 p.m. Retention for Leno out of the second half of lead-in SVU (Viewers: #3, 8.91 million; A18-49: #4, 2.8/ 7) was 52 percent in total viewers and 50 percent in the demo.
Fox aired lackluster So You Think You Can Dance (Viewers: #4, 5.55 million; A18-49: #3, 2.1/ 6), which host Nigel Lythgoe is openly complaining about the caliber of contestants this season, and critically acclaimed Glee (Viewers: #4, 7.35 million; A18-49: #2t, 3.3/ 8), which built out of the 8:30 p.m. portion of So You Think You Can Dance (Viewers: 5.98 million; A18-49: 2.2/ 6) by 1.37 million viewers and 50 percent in the demo.
Over at the CW was diluted America’s Next Top Model (Viewers: #5, 3.19 million; A18-49: #5, 1.5/ 4), which concludes the season next Wednesday, and a repeat of The Vampire Diaries (Viewers: #5, 1.22 million; A18-49: #5, 0.5/ 1).
A contestant who participated on the ABC series Wipeout has died.
Tom Sparks, 33, was hospitalized two weeks ago after he complained of knee pain and experienced shortness of breath while on the first part of the show's obstacle course, Entertainment Tonight reports. He died Nov. 5 and the cause of death has been deferred pending additional tests, the L.A. County Coroner's office told ET.
"We offer our heartfelt condolences to the family. This is a tragic loss and our thoughts are with them at this time," ABC and Endemol USA, the production company behind Wipeout, said in a joint statement.
Doctors believe Sparks may have died from a stroke caused by a pre-existing disease called antiphospholipid antibody syndrome (APS), which causes unnatural blood clotting, his father, Bill Sparks, told the Idaho Mountain Express.
I Resampled Old Christine and saw Gary Unmarried for the first time last night OC is still unfunny. Any show that can make Wanda Sykes not look funny, is bad.
I did enjoy Gary Unmarried. Not the greatest sitcom, but still funny. I may just need to put it on my DVR list. Love the BJ & The Bear references.
Depending on what they do with the CBS comedies come Mid-season, I would separate these two comedies. ROE and GU would work well together. OC and AOP could also work better together, or at least move them away from the funnier comedies.
Place OC and AOP on Sundays at 8pm Place GU and ROE on Wednesdays at 8pm Launch a new comedy at 8:30 on Mondays.

Although to be honest, last nights episode was weird. I do not think it was one of their best of the season so far. I do wonder if that, along with the CMA's, caused the slip in viewers.

For me, Wednesday at 9 has been the most interesting timeslot on TV to follow this season, with a procedural vs. procedural dynamic on top of a strong new show vs. strong new show dynamic, plus stuff like baseball and CMA preemptions further shaking things up. SVU even when it gets into the upper 2's is consistently a 4th place show.
I know this may take a little research work, but was was the average retention for 10pm, NBC shows last season? Especially for last years new series? Did it ever git as bad as Leno's retention numbers?

Like with Knight Rider, NBC renewed Mercy way too fast with a full season order. I think this show will drop to a 1.5 or even lower when American Idol comes in. If I was NBC, I'd have Parenthood ready to go in this spot.

I quickly read the story and it sounded like the event that he had problems on, was not that difficult. It is basically running on a treadmill and dodging a ball. I wonder if he had any previous health problems or if this would have happened even if he was at home.
Not sure what the physical condition of the person was, but I do know that Wipeout does have a fair share of larger contestants on the show. Most never make beyond the 1st stage, but it can be physically demanding. If anything, they may need to require more physically fit contestants.

I wonder if the bigger names were performing during the 2nd hour? I think the comedies did benefit by not having ABC comedies against it. I know I watched them for the first time, in a long while.
