Supernatural fans always speak of the mythical money making prowess of their show, yet never have an facts to back this up. Show me article, link, bank statement or just anything concrete that backs up these claims.

Well since I am at work I don't have any time to find the links, but just oof of US DVD slaes you can find the first 3 seasons info on thenumbers.com. That would back up the US DVD reports of sales more then doubling each season since its low point of season 2, you can also double check them versus other TV shows, both on the CW and in general (but its a lot of links). But those facts are easy to find.

Hell even tvbythenumbers have mentioned that on their last two weeks of DVD numbers (they hae a nice big tab that will lead you to the last two weeks, (whcih also inlcudes links to last years results).

Probably not, but the vast majority I've encountered online and in real life are rabid and don't believe the simple facts about their show.

I wouldn't hang my hat on DVD sales to prove that Supernatural is a huge money maker. Hell I think True Blood has sold more DVD's this year then Supernatural has in its entire run. Look, someone in an earlier post said that Supernatural was huge overseas, well where are the facts to back up this CLAIM?

If you're going to go on a forum an proclaim things then the least you can do is have some facts, not just hearsay.

Excellent numbers. Those went steadily up. That show has the makings of a hit.

Okay, well besides the fact that it came out of Jensen Ackles' own mouth at the London con back in '07...Dawn Ostroff didn't cancel our show after this season because it has such strong sales overseas...here are a few links.

And dude--of course the sales tumbled in the second week. Supernatural season four DVD was at #1 on the overall best sellers' list at amazon. Not the sci-fi list. Once you reach number 1, you tumble. Anyway, here are a few links:

http://www.jesterz.net/superna...-by-the-numbers.html

..The fourth way to earn income is through international distribution of first run episodes. This is Supernatural's bread and butter, but there's no way to tell for sure just how much Supernatural is earning internationally. I know big name shows like Lost try to fetch near what the license fee is at home, which is currently $2 million an episode. Heroes runs at about $1.3 million. Considering that Supernatural airs in nearly seventy countries at various times, even at [only]$100,000 per episode that comes to roughly 7 million per episode. I'll let you all do the math for 7,000,000 times 82 assuming Warner Brothers sells all four seasons. Often times they don't [they have]. However, with season five on the horizon that number will keep growing. Plus, I have the nagging feeling that I'm grossly underestimating, for the show is likely not that cheap in countries like England and Australia. It probably is that cheap though in Bulgaria, where Warner Brothers' shows are sold in group packages to sister cable outlets.....

She makes clear in the article that while the CW isn't making money hand over fist, it's a different story for Warners itself. It makes its money off Supernatural through DVD sales and international syndication. First run syndication isn't happening for it yet. CSI rules the day in domestic syndication.

A little article about how SPN season four has outsold all the other CW shows on DVD this season. I'm trying to find an online listing of all the markets SPN airs in. We've got people from so many countries at spn.tv it's hard to keep track. It was 70 last time we got a number.

They should go ahead and cancel Parks & Rec and Community. How embarrassing for NBC.

I appreciate the link. I read the article and there is a awful lot of presuming within it. There wasn't many actual numbers just guesses. But if Supernatural fans accept guesses and presumptions as proof, who am I to question their judgement.

Thanks. I wish I could find that listing of all the markets. Using Alice Jester's formula, and she's right that it probably draws more than $100,000 per episode licensing fees in some countries, that adds up to a nice chunk of change for Warners in the long run. It makes a lot of sense for them to keep it around. A very nice chunk of change. I know we've had guest from Russia, Brazil, Japan, Malaysia (it airs everywhere in Malaysia) and every European country at our site where it airs. They're fascinating people.

Jamhexxx, there were plenty of numbers in the second article. Numbers of units sold and profit margins. I'll find that listing of markets for you. Just do the math with the licensing fees. TVByTheNumbers.com is an excellent site for facts and figures of that sort.

Nope. That's not acceptable. This is one of the most expensively produced shows on the air, not Jay Leno. And frankly, I don't blame FOX one bit for the drop--sure, it was going to take a hit in that timeslot, but it should be doing better than this. Fringe is not delivering the goods this season so far. I've worried about the quality of the scripts, but these first two have none of the excitement of the best first season eps. And no Leonard Nimoy.

It was a good gambit, but I'm starting to think they need to replace the showrunners. And I'm not sure that can happen. But I wish it would.

Oh, and just like that--Greys is #1 in viewers and the demo again.

I guess Marti Noxon must be gone?

In a perfect world, pisher. In a perfect world she'd be gone.

Sorry to disappoint you, meggie. I'm not sure I'm even a fan at this point. They have the wrong people making that show. All the elements of a cult hit, in terms of the cast, premise, etc--but it really goes to show you, WRITING MATTERS. They just don't have the scripts.

Well, she's on Private Practice. She can only do so much harm there. Greys has mainly worked its way out of the various idiotic cul de sacs she ran it into.

Hmm, wonder if she's doing some consulting work on Fringe? Wink
