I think the first cancellation of the season, otherwise TBL:TBL, could mean encore presentations for The Vampire Diaries... but is that the best thing to do?

... sorry, dumont?
I just saw it on The Hollywood Reporter. What will be replacing it? If I was The CW, I would air repeats of The Vampire Diaries.

That's what they should do - a VD repeat leading into a new VD the next night would benefit the show.
But, knowing The CW, I'm sure we'll see a Melrose Place repeat inserted into the slot.
And not sure what to think on the V delay. Airing only 4 episodes before a 3 month hiatus could be a good move, or it could be a terrible move. Depends on how well it does in November I guess
I wouldn't hang my hat on DVD sales to prove that Supernatural is a huge money maker. Hell I think True Blood has sold more DVD's this year then Supernatural has in its entire run.
That's not the most fair comparison - True Blood is THE highest-selling show on DVD this season (actually, the highest-selling in, well, the last couple years!), and it's been out MONTHS longer than any other current DVD set released. For the sake of the most accurate comparison, how about comparing all of the first week sales for shows that have come out on DVD so far this season? Or just the top 10, because I'm lazy.
1. True Blood: 509,317 units ($19,063,735) 2. The Office: 407,426 units ($13,905,499) 3. Heroes: 304,968 units ($11,433,250) 4. Dexter: 297,580 units ($6,076,584) 5. 24: 274,496 units ($9,055,623) 6. House: 251,986 units ($6,801,102) 7. Supernatural: 245,047 units ($8,924,612) 8. Smallville: 206,341 units ($7,529,383) 9. Weeds: 178,236 units ($4,454,118) 10. Battlestar Galactica: 173,579 units ($5,528,491)
And that's just one week. Supernatural and Smallville have always been the CW's best-selling shows on DVD, by a significant margin. I didn't think this was news to anyone...
And since I posted that list, I do find DVD sales fascinating - it's amazing how lower-rated shows can top higher-rated shows, and it seems that serialized shows sell much better on DVD. No wonder NBC won't let go of Heroes - NBC Studios definitely has a vested interest in keeping it going!
This is too bad....Vincent D'Onofrio has been one of the greater actors on any of the Law & Order series. I've always thought he was tragically underrated, while Mariska Hargaty (sp?) is quite overrated....
I used to feel bad for CI, because I thought it had to face heavier competition and got the promotion shaft from during its time on NBC, at least relative to its 2 sister shows....I can care less what happens to the show now....

The Vampire Diaries held up and I think this is the direction that The CW should be going for.
I bet they are kicking themself for cancelling VM and Reaper those shows are the type of shows that would get good ratings on a good timeslot
OMG. Give it up. VM was getting under 2 million viewers when it was canceled. And that was back in the day when the CW average was in the 3.25 million range. VM got the prime post-ANTM slot back when that show was in its prime, and it STILL flopped. If it was on the air now, it'd be getting Beautiful Life ratings.
The Cautionary Tale of 'Veronica Mars'
For all those who think The CW made a wise decision in cancelling 'Veronica Mars', you need to consider what came afterwards.
Two years ago in May, The CW made what may have been the gravest error in its brief history when it cancelled 'Veronica Mars', one of its brand-defining shows with a fiercely loyal viewership. Yes, the May 2007 episodes were lower-rated, but they were a network-mandated experiment in standalones (averaging 0.96 A18-49, 2,054,000 viewers) vs. season-long story arcs (averaging 1.16 A18-49, 2,528,000 viewers).
At that upfront, The CW renewed 'Everybody Hates Chris', 'The Game' and 'Girlfriends', all three series of which had worst Nielsens in the 2006-07 season, and all three of which saw their fortunes fall and cancellation occur.
And The CW has not fared well with replacement fare ever since it cancelled 'Veronica Mars'. Since the cancellation of 'Veronica Mars', The CW has introduced 21 new series, and of those 21 upstarts, only two series garnered better A18-49s than the 'Veronica Mars' season 3 average: 'Pussycat Dolls' and 'The Vampire Diaries'.
Ever since the mishandled cancellation of 'Veronica Mars', we've witnessed many other low A18-49 series with highly loyal viewer fanbases getting renewals...'Friday Night Lights', 'Dollhouse', 'Better Off Ted'. Wise network presidents have learned to look beyond LIVE Nielsens to timeshifted DVR, Hulu and iTune viewership, or eventual DVD monies to come...the 'Veronica Mars' DVDs did exceptionally well for Warner.
The CW Since 'Veronica Mars': - 3 Lower-Rated Renewal Series, All Failed - 2 Replacement Series Fared Better - 19 Replacement Series Fared Worse
This is the 2nd night in a row that NBC was so frightfully close to the CW in the demo....whichever show eventually does fall below the CW in the demo will never be allowed to live down the humiliation...next day cancellation will be in the cards.
Remember what happened when Joey lost to Everybody Hates Chris?

Lower HUT levels at 11 clearly. Mentalist gained an entire share point and held steady in the demo share despite losing viewers & losing demo.
It is interesting that HUT levels come into play when evaluating ratings for 8:30 sitcoms, but The Mentalist is expected to "sprout" outta CSI, just cuz....

And Supernatural's DVD sales tumbled 76.70% in its second week. From 8.9 million in sales to 2.8 million in sales. What do I take from these numbers? Supernatural blew its wad in the first week and will not sell much more than they have already. They probably won't sell 1 million worth next week. Not exactly having the best legs.
Supernatural - The Complete Fourth Season 57,121 -76.7% 302,168 $2,288,267 $11,212,879 2
That was a fast cancellation even by CW standards, I wouldn’t be surprised if Vampire Diaries repeats fill the slot until Life UneXpected is ready.
The news about Criminal Intent doesn't surprise as the show is doing good on USA but I imagine it's very expensive and by getting rid of the main cast, they can reduce costs and just have Jeff Goldblum and Saffron Burrows but I can't see fans being happy at all.

NBC in the dumpster. Sad but true
VD is a hit for CW, it's official now
Very surprised at FF, another pretentious piece of crap. At least Lost or Heroes had great pilots and great special effects in those. FF's special effects were laughable. Great numbers for GA given the cliffhanger was not a cliffhanger. Good episodes BTW
Fringe is dead.
I'm not ready to pass the collection plate just yet for The Mentalist. Private Practice is nowhere near the competition that Grey's Anatomy is, that's for sure. I can't stand either show, regardless. I'm a fan of The Mentalist and thought last night's opener was weak, but was needed to set up the conflict to come between the Bosco character and Jane's.
I also thought the production elements on CSI were outstanding. It was a real eyegrabber. Worth watching if anyone gets a chance to download.

Production has ceased on THE BEAUTIFUL LIFE in New York. The show will be pulled from The CW’s schedule immediately. Timeslot replacement will be announced shortly.
