-Ratings Breakdown: Led by the one-two punch of American Idol and House, there was no stopping Fox on this third Tuesday in April. Dancing With the Stars-ignited ABC was second in both total viewers and adults 18-49, followed by CBS, NBC and The CW.
American Idol opened the evening for Fox with a dominant 25.86 million viewers and a 9.9 rating/27 share among adults 18-49 at 8 p.m. But compared to one year earlier (Viewers: 28.44 million; A18-49: 11.4/32 on April 18, 2006), keep in mind that this was a loss of 2.58 million viewers and 13 percent in the demo. At this point, Sanjaya really needs to go.
Second in the 8 p.m. hour was a repeat of CBS’ NCIS, at a still respectable 11.15 million viewers and a 2.5/ 7 among adults 18-49. Also present was a repeat of ABC’s Dancing With the Stars (Viewers: 6.89 million; A18-49: 1.8/ 5), NBC’s Dateline (Viewers: #4, 5.08 million; A18-49: #5, 1.6/ 5), and veteran Gilmore Girls on The CW (Viewers: #5, 3.83 million; A18-49: #4, 1.7/ 5), which has lost its oomph. Although there is a rumor circulating that Gilmore Girls will return for a final 13 episodes next season, considering that show is down from the year-ago telecast by 1.02 million viewers (Viewers: 4.85 to 3.83 million) and 11 percent among adults 18-49 (1.9/ 5 to 1.7/ 5), why even bother? (Year-ago results are based on the final nationals).
Fox’s House kept the winning momentum alive at 9 p.m., with 22.57 million viewers and a 9.1/22 among adults 18-49 (with retention out of American Idol of 79 percent in viewers and 92 percent among adults 18-49). But the Dancing With the Stars Results Show also deserves accolades on ABC, with a healthy 16.17 million viewers and a 4.1/10 among adults 18-49. We’ll miss you, Clyde!
Third in the 9 p.m. hour was a repeat of CBS’ The Unit (Viewers: 7.32 million; A18-49: 2.1/ 5), followed by a repeat of NBC’s Law & Order: Criminal Intent (Viewers: 5.51 million; A18-49: 1.5/ 4), and Pussycat Dolls Present: The Search For the Next Doll on The CW (Viewers: 3.00 million; A18-49: 1.5/ 4). Retention for Pussycat Dolls out of Gilmore Girls was 78 percent in viewers and 88 percent among adults 18-49.
At 10 p.m., a special edition of ABC’s Primetime focusing on the Virginia Tech tragedy led the hour with 11.34 million viewers and a 3.6/10 among adults 18-49. Second was a repeat of NBC’s aging Law & Order: SVU (Viewers: 8.32 million; A18-49: 2.3/ 7), followed by CBS’ 48 Hours Mystery, also focused on Virginia Tech, with 6.49 million viewers and a 2.2/ 6 in the demo.
It appears that if that were to happen, numbers could fall even more.

The CW is doing the same thing with Gilmore Girls that the WB did with 7th Heaven in 2005...renewing it just because it still has "ratings life", even though the series really doesn't have the creativity it once had.
Marc, I know you love to pick on NBC, but is it really appropriate to label Dateline a loser when it was a 1 hour show focusing on the Virginia Tech tragedy?
The winners/losers aren't based on the content or quality of a series. It's about their ratings performance. And 5.08 million is not good...especially considering ABC's Primetime also focused on this tragedy and (even though it had a nice lead-in) scored twice as high.
I've always seen Marc's winners/losers as almost entirely objective.

This proves what I've been saying all along: neither The Batchelor (which I cannot watch) nor Boston Legal (which I like) are good lead-outs for Dancing performance/results shows, as this Primetime special beat them both. Yes, it was on a high profile event, but so was competing 48 Hours mystery, and that faultered badly. If Primetime can get 11.5 million viewers and, even more impressively, a 3.6 in the demo (from a 4.1 for DWTS), the right scripted or reality show, or even a newsmagazine, from the looks of it, would be better options that the lead-outs ABC now has.

2 nites so far this week and 2 nites abc has beat cbs in the demo; cbs is going down

The following results are based on the fast national ratings (Live Plus Same Day data) -Adults 18-49: Fox: 9.5 rating/25 share, ABC: 3.1/ 8, CBS: 2.1/ 6, NBC: 1.8/ 5, CW: 1.6/ 4
But Boston Legal's timeslot is Tuesdays at 10, and has been for nearly 2 full seasons now. ABC didn't deliberately place BL there to be a DWTS lead-out...it just worked out that way. DWTS is the show that gets moved around...especially this time, to avoid the Idol juggernaut. In the fall, it only ran until 9:30 instead of 10:00 most weeks. But this time, ABC didn't want to take a chance putting any portion of DWTS in the 8:00 hour.

With regards to the big losses this year for Desperate Housewives, American Idol and CSI, is it possible that this is just the noticeable effect of free downloads and TiVo?
CBS's Tuesday lineup is just very older skewing...yet I would never recommend them changing that. Look how well it does up against younger-skewing Idol. No other network can really compete against AI as well as these CBS shows can.
I read in a magazine that Marcia Cross is slated to return to Desperate Housewives for the May 20 season finale! I was happy to hear that... I can't remember which magazine...I just glimpsed at an article about her in one when I was buying groceries this morning.
