-Ratings Breakdown: Led by American Idol, Fox continues to stand head and shoulders above the Wednesday competition, with ABC and CBS sharing the very distant No. 2 spot. Fourth was NBC, followed by an improved The CW.
It was no contest, of course, at 8 p.m., with 28.45 million viewers and an 11.1 rating/30 share among adults 18-49 for American Idol. Comparably, that beat the four competing networks combined in both categories. In the distant No. 2 spot was CBS’ suddenly non-buzz worthy Jericho at 8.22 million viewers and a 2.2/ 6 among adults 18-49. Tied for the No. 3 and 4 spots, respectively, were ABC comedies George Lopez (Viewers: #4, 5.86 million; A18-49: #2t, 2.1/ 6) and a repeat of According to Jim (Viewers: #4, 5.60 million; A18-49: #3t, 2.1/ 5), and NBC’s overused Dateline (Viewers: #3, 6.17 million; A18-49: #4t, 2.0/ 5). Rounding off the 8 p.m. hour was America’s Next Top Model on the CW at 4.43 million viewers (#5) and a 2.0/ 5 among adults 18-49 (#4t). Of note for Top Model was a second-place finish in the hour among adults 18-34 (2.5/ 8), women 18-34 (4.1/11) and women 18-49 (3.0/ 7) behind American Idol.
In series-premiere news, Fox dramedy The Wedding Bells was no Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader (which scored 23.37 million viewers and a 9.7/23 among adults 18-49 in the 9:30 p.m. half hour last week). But it did win the 9 p.m. hour among adults 18-49 (5.2/13), with a second-place finish (behind a repeat of CBS’ Criminal Minds) in total viewers (12.48 million). Comparatively, however, retention for The Wedding Bells out of Idol was disappointing at just 44 percent in total viewers and 47 percent in the demo, while erosion in the second half hour of 3.56 million viewers (14.26 to 10.70 million) and 24 percent among adults 18-49 (5.9/15 to 4.5/11) is even more concerning. Consider this a disappointing start for The Wedding Bells. Do we really want to spend an hour each week watching a wedding being planned?
Even a repeat of CBS’ Criminal Minds was still enough to win the 9 p.m. hour in total viewers (13.84 million), with a second-place finish among adults 18-49 (3.9/10). Comparably, that built from lead-in Jericho by a hefty 5.62 million viewers and 77 percent in the demo. Also in the time period were ABC sitcoms According to Jim (Viewers: #4, 7.57 million; A18-49: #3, 3.2/ 8) and In Case of Emergency (Viewers: #4, 6.09 million; A18-49: #3, 2.7/ 7), the time period premiere of NBC’s Crossing Jordan (Viewers: #3, 8.03 million; A18-49: #4, 2.4/ 6), and a repeat of the CW’s Pussycat Dolls: The Search for the Next Pussycat Doll (Viewers: #5, 3.72 million; A18-49: #5, 1.6/ 4), which was almost identical to its debut one night earlier. For a reality show, that is quite unusual (and worthy of an Honorable Mention ranking).
Worth noting for Crossing Jordan, meanwhile, was growth out of Dateline of 1.86 million viewers and 20 percent among adults 18-49.
At 10 p.m., and opposite a repeat of CBS’ CSI: NY, ABC’s Lost took center stage in both total viewers (12.34 million) and adults 18-49 (5.5/14). But, let’s be honest: ratings for Lost are not what they used to be. Second was the CSI: NY second-run (Viewers: 11.64 million; A18-49: 3.5/ 9), followed by NBC’s Medium at 8.78 million viewers and a 3.0/ 8 in the demo. Comparably, Medium built from lead-in Crossing Jordan by 650,000 viewers and 25 percent among adults 18-49.
Hmm...I think that this is more evidence that PCD should air out of new episodes of ANTM, not repeats of GG. Of course, I wonder now if the CW will just continue to air PCD on both Tuesdays and Wednesdays, rather than running OTH repeats out of new ANTM?

It's probably better to have one new show on both Tuesday and Wednesday, paired with a repeat. If both new shows were on Wednesday, nobody would watch on Tuesday; they should keep encores of the Pussycat Doll show on Wednesdays, though, and maybe shove One Tree Hill repeats in the Sunday @ 7pm slot. Just an idea ...

Sources confirm that Chris Lowell — that's Veronica Mars' Piz to you — has been added to the cast of the in-the-works Grey's Anatomy spin-off (or, as the lawyers over at ABC insist we call it, "The upcoming enhanced two-hour Grey's Anatomy episode with a potential for afterlife").
Althought this is fantastic news for Lowell and his growing legion of admirers, it probably doesn't bode well for Veronica Mars' renewal chances. Also not helping matters: the impressive premiere ratings for those damn Pussycat Dolls.
Still, this is a fraktastic break for Lowell, one of the nicest, most down-to-earth young actors in the biz. Let's hope success doesn't corrupt his soul.
Whatever NBC does with MEDIUM, I can tell you this: it is airing fantastic episodes this season. While the tone has changed somewhat from the early days as the girls have gotten older leading to a somewhat more domestic emphasis, the creativity of this series is at an extremely high level. Last night was yet another example of the powerful imagination behind the writing of this series.

Well - that doesn't bode well for VM, especially since the character of Piz was originally brought in to be a new love interest for Veronica.
Lost didn't even improve in viewers, while the show was on against a repeat of CSI: NY and Medium. I wonder if Lost ultimately will improve in viewers, because this just seems sad, for a show that once avereged +18 million viewers.
I actually did like last night's Lost ep quite a bit. Not GREAT, but certainly very watchable, some interesting developments, and honestly--there's never been a bad Sayeed-centric episode. Sometimes I wish they could ALL be Sayeed-centric episodes.
However, they still haven't made the commitment to end the show with the fifth season, and people are still skeptical about whether there's any plan other than to flog this lucrative media property for all its worth.
