Prime-Time Ratings:
Sunday 5/04/08

The following results are based on the fast affiliate ratings (Live Plus Same Day data)

-Total Viewers:
ABC: 11.56 million, CBS: 8.71, Fox: 5.26, NBC: 4.59, CW: 1.19

-Adults 18-49:
ABC: 4.2 rating/12 share, Fox: 2.6/ 8, CBS: 1.8/ 5, NBC: 1.2/ 4, CW: 0.5/ 1

--------------

Note: Any prior rating results are based on the final nationals. Since the level of DVR penetration has increased from 13 percent at this same point last year to approximately 23 percent at present, the overall results may be negatively impacted.

---------------

-Yesterday’s Winners:
60 Minutes (CBS), America’s Funniest Home Videos (ABC), Cold Case (CBS), Extreme Makeover: Home Edition (ABC), Desperate Housewives (ABC), Family Guy (Fox), Brothers & Sisters (ABC)

-Yesterday’s Losers (Excluding Repeats):
Dateline (NBC), Everybody Hates Chris (CW), Aliens in America (CW)

----------

-Ratings Breakdown:
ABC scored a typical Sunday victory, with a first-place finish in both total viewers and adults 18-49. CBS and Fox shared the number two and three spots (CBS was second in total viewers, Fox #2 among adults 18-49), followed by Fox and the CW.

The 400th episode of ABC America’s Funniest Home Videos (time flies!) opened the evening first among adults 18-49 (2.4 rating/9 share) and second in total viewers, with 7.32 million from 7-8 p.m. CBS’ competing 60 Minutes was just the opposite, at 10.52 million viewers (#1) and a second-place 1.5/ 5 in the demo. Also airing in the 7 p.m. hour was NBC’s Dateline (Viewers: #3, 4.20 million; A18-49: #4, 1.2/ 4), repeats of animated Fox sitcoms King of the Hill (Viewers: #4, 2.24 million; A18-49: #4, 1.1/ 4) and The Simpsons (Viewers: #4, 3.54 million; A18-49: #2, 1.7/ 3), and a repeat of America’s Next Top Model on the CW (Viewers: #5, 1.09 million; A18-49: #5, 0.4/ 1).

Leadership was also tied in the 8 p.m. hour between the season-finale of CBS’ Cold Case and Extreme Makeover: Home Edition on ABC. Take a look:

Sunday 8 p.m.
Cold Case (CBS)
Viewers: 11.57 million (#1), A18-49: 2.4/ 7 (#2)

Extreme Makeover: Home Edition (ABC)
Viewers: 11.46 million (#2), A18-49: 4.1/12 (#1)

Also in the 8 p.m. hour were Fox sitcoms The Simpsons (Viewers: #3, 6.18 million; A18-49: #2, 3.0/ 9) and King of the Hill (Viewers: #3, 5.69 million; A18-49: #2, 2.7/ 8), a repeat of USA drama Monk on NBC (Viewers: #4, 4.12 million; A18-49: #4, 0.9/ 3), and struggling CW comedies Everybody Hates Chris (Viewers: #5, 1.24 million; A18-49: #5, 0.4/ 1) and Aliens in America (Viewers: #5, 1.04 million; A18-49: #5, 0.4/ 1). Chances of Aliens in America coming back next season are nil.

ABC moved into the sole winner’s circle at 9 p.m., with Desperate Housewives at a still hefty 16.63 million viewers and a 6.2/16 among adults 18-49. Comparably, that built out of lead-in Extreme Makeover: Home Edition by 5.17 million viewers and 51 percent in the demo.

Also airing from 9-10 p.m. were animated Fox sitcoms Family Guy (Viewers: #2, 7.68 million; A18-49: #2, 3.9/10) and American Dad (Viewers: #2, 6.21 million; A18-49: #2, 3.1/ 8); a repeat of Showtime drama Dexter on CBS (Viewers: #3, 6.11 million; A18-49: #3, 1.5/ 4); a repeat of USA drama Psych on NBC (Viewers: #4, 3.75 million; A18-49: #4, 1.2/ 4); and CW sitcoms The Game (Viewers: #5, 1.44 million; A18-49: #5, 0.6/ 2) and a repeat of Girlfriends (Viewers: #5, 1.24 million; A18-49: #5, 0.5/ 1). Worth noting for Family Guy was as increase out of lead-in King of the Hill of 44 percent among adults 18-49.

Must-see ABC drama Brothers & Sisters, which reached yet another zenith creatively last night, dominated at 10 p.m., with 10.85 million viewers and a 3.9/10 among adults 18-49. Emmy voters…you need to take notice of this show!

Wrapping up the 10 p.m. hour was the final repeat installment of Showtime drama Dexter on CBS (Viewers: #2, 6.63 million; A18-49: #2t, 1.8/ 5) and a repeat of Law & Order: SVU on NBC (Viewers: #3, 6.28 million; A18-49: #2t, 1.8/ 5).

Nice to see Housewives rebounding smartly from the last few weeks.

"a repeat of USA drama Psych on NBC (Viewers: #4, 3.75 million; A18-49: #4, 10.2/ 4); "

WHOA! DOND get out of the way...Psych will save NBC now!

Cold Case did badly in a special airing! Cancel! Roll Eyes

What is going on with the Fox animation all of a sudden? It all took a big tumble week-to-week.

Desperate Housewives hasn't recovered at all, and 16.6 isn't exactly "hefty" in comparison to what it used to be.
I'm glad to see Cold Case is still holding steady, but I must comment about last night's ep: I think a new record has been broken. 20 minutes into the show I already knew exactly who the killer was and why they did it. All that was left for me to do is yawn my way to the great "discovery" in the last few minutes. The writers need to wake up and for next season, come up with less predictable plots.
And the 10p soap Brothers and Sisters is hardly "must-see" nor is it "dominating". If CBS / NBC come up with a decent competition, B&S (or as I call it, BS) is a goner. Watching this makes me miss Dynasty.

I can't believe next week is already the season finale of Brothers & Sisters... I have my issues with the faux-incest storyline, but the way it (as well as the Ojai financial crisis) resounded through the entire family's lives... wonderful. I wonder if next week will have Sarah regretting making Holly Chairwoman & CEO of the merged company once it becomes more known that Rebecca isn't a Walker.

The chances may be low, but they are not 'nil'. If CW needs a second sitcom to pair with EHC and The Game cannot fill that role because of whatever financial terms were on the lawsuit, Aliens in America could still be back.

This aspect of CC is what led me to stop watching the show at the end of season I four years ago.

That's a shame, because season two ended up the best one to date, with classic eps like "Best Friends" and the Rocky Horror tribute. The real deterioration started last year, although every once in a while they do produce a gem (like that heartbreaking ep about the two cops).
