Prime-Time Ratings:
Thursday 2/07/08

The following results are based on the fast affiliate ratings (Live Plus Same Day data)

-Total Viewers:
CBS: 11.98 million, ABC: 10.31, Fox: 9.04, NBC: 8.53, CW: 3.32

-Adults 18-49:
ABC: 4.1 rating/11 share, CBS: 3.5/ 9, NBC and Fox: 2.9/ 8 each, CW: 1.4/ 4

----------

Note: Any prior rating results are based on the final nationals. Also, since the level of DVR penetration has increased from 9 percent in early 2006-07 to approximately 20 percent at present, the overall results may be negatively impacted.

----------

-Yesterday’s Winners:
Survivor: Micronesia (CBS), Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? (Fox), Lost (ABC), CSI R (CBS), Don’t Forget the Lyrics R (Fox), Without a Trace R (CBS)

-Yesterday’s Losers:
Lipstick Jungle (NBC)

----------

-Ratings Breakdown:
It was a night of split leadership on this second Thursday of the Feb. 2008 sweeps, with CBS the most-watched network and ABC No. 1 among adults 18-49. Does anyone know, or care, that it is the February sweeps?

CBS’ Survivor franchise is not the powerhouse it used to be, but 13.87 million viewers and a 4.8 rating/13 share among adults 18-49 was more than enough for the season-premiere of Survivor: Micronesia to win the 8 p.m. hour. Year-to-year, however, Survivor: Micronesia was down by 2.21 million viewers and 14 percent in the demo compared to Survivor: Fiji (Viewers: 16.08 million; A18-49: 5.6/15 on Feb. 8, 2007). As for last night’s opener, why Johnny Fairplay? Why?

Second from 8-9 p.m. was Fox sleeper success Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? (Viewers: 9.51 million; A18-49: 2.7/ 8), followed by another edition of NBC’s Deal or No Deal (Viewers: 9.31 million; A18-49: 2.7/ 7), a repeat of ABC’s Lost (Viewers: 6.50 million; A18-49: 2.2/ 6), and an original installment of the CW’s Smallville (Viewers: 3.97 million; A18-49: 1.8/ 5). Worth noting for Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? was double-digit growth from former occupants ‘Til Death (Viewers: 5.21 million; A18-49: 2.3/ 6 on Feb. 8, 2007) and The War at Home (Viewers: 4.79 million; A18-49: 2.2/ 6).

ABC moved into the winner’s circle at 9 p.m. care of Lost, which led the evening with 15.06 million viewers and a 6.4/16 among adults 18-49. Tied for second was a repeat of CBS’ CSI (Viewers: #2, 11.91 million; A18-49: #3, 3.2/ 8) and NBC’s Celebrity Apprentice (Viewers: #3, 8.66 million; A18-49: #2, 3.3/ 8). Obviously, Donald Trump is keeping around should-have-been-fired Omarosa because she makes good reality TV. Speaking of Celebrity Apprentice, wasn’t it obnoxious how NBC used the bottom left hand of the screen for the countdown clock of Lipstick Jungle?

Rounding off the 9 p.m. hour was a repeat of Fox’s Don’t Forget the Lyrics (Viewers: #4: 8.57; A18-49: #4, 3.1/ 8), which still held up very well, and the CW’s Supernatural (Viewers: #5, 2.67 million; A18-49: #5, 1.1/ 3).

In series-premiere news, NBC’s Lipstick Jungle finished a disappointing third at 10 p.m. in total viewers (7.62 million viewers) and second among adults 18-49 (2.9/ 8). Compared to declining year-ago occupant ER (Viewers: 11.60 million; A18-49: 4.8/13), Lipstick Jungle was down by a hefty 3.98 million viewers and 40 percent in the demo.

Week two of ABC’s Eli Stone remained on the board, with 9.38 million viewers (#2) and a first-place 3.6/10 among adults 18-49. One week earlier, it opened with 11.14 million viewers and a 4.0/11 in the demo. More concerning, perhaps, was a loss of 2.36 million viewers (10.56 to 8.20 million) and 22 percent among adults 18-49 at 10:30 p.m. (4.0/11 to 3.1/ 9).

Capping off the 10 p.m. hour was a repeat of CBS’ Without a Trace at 10.16 million viewers (#1) and a 2.7/ 7 among adults 18-49 (#3). Considering this was an encore, the first-place finish in total viewers makes Without a Trace a “winner.”

Good numbers for Lost but the fast nationals confirm ES is gonna survive a long period of time. LS disappointing as expected

What happened to SN? Ouch. Bad news after bad news for CW

Eli Stone really IS like Pushing Daisies!

Only if the strike ends soon, what excuse will they use to bring it back for another failed attempt to make people watch something that tries so hard to be clever, and only succeeds in being precious and twee?

How many times have they done that already?

If CW itself isn't canceled soon, I could see them bringing it back one more time. But it won't do well in any timeslot, and if they keep switching it around to find a better night and time, people will say the ratings are bad because they keep switching timeslots.

How many years does it need to run? How many variations of the same exact story do they have to come up with? At this point in time, the longer it runs, the less fondly it will be remembered.

Pretty solid numbers for Lost. It looks like that show has rebounded from last Spring. With the writer's strike near an end, it looks likes possibly a whole season of Lost. Pretty impressed with Eli Stone too. I know the numbers went down from last week, but most shows that have led out of Lost seem to nosedive pretty fast. It beat LJ and won the demo. Let's see how week 3 is.

FOX held study with it's surprising combo of the year. Was hoping for that girl to win the million. Even I knew that question. DFTL did very well for a repeat and against the Donald. Did they already cancel Singing Bee?

NBC is in bad shape now. LJ just tanked. It did worse than I thought. I thought it would peak some interest with Brooke as the leading lady. I guess people are just waiting for the Sex and the City movie to come out. Why they renewed Celebrity Apprentice is beyond me. I'm so tired of Trump's ego. The show was good for 1-2 editions. It's just boring now.

CBS is back on the map with Survivor. CBS can't rely on that alone though. Jury is still out on BB9 and Jericho. I still say FOX will dethrone CBS this year as the most watched network. Who would of thought that 10 years ago. Pretty impressive.

Who would have thought a year ago that DOND would lose head-to-head with 5th Grader. That is a little bit of a shocker

Well, I was wondering! Smiler

It's the second half-hour drop that really tells the tale. People were willing to try something different--that's not the problem. The problem is that people wanted GOOD different, not suckstoeffinghell different. This is a distinction the nets seem to have a hard time grasping.

Actually ES is fading faster than most of the new shows

Pisher, it has only had two different time slots. It started on Tuesday nights, but then switched to Thursday nights close to the end of its first season. I think it should go back to Tuesday nights.

Peace!!
