I agree. The Oscars should not be labeled as 'winner'. If anything, NASCAR should be labeled as a 'winner' for airing 2 hours of raindrops and talk about gophers and still getting over 10 million viewers against the Oscars.
And, while we are Marc bashing , can I just add that I am really tired of seeing half hour sitcoms get lumped ratings just because they air back to back episodes? The Simpsons and Everybody Hates Chris deserve better.
Is there typically a spike after 11pm for the Best Picture announcement or will it continue to go down?
Dexter's doing better than Shark (R) would do, at least in the demo, but not by very much. My guess is that they'll pull/move it in about six weeks and have Shark play out its post-strike originals in that slot.

I agree with that. I think a lot of people watch the Oscars to see who won, but contrary to the general belief don't care much about the fashion, acceptance speeches or musical numbers. You can find that info online easily.
I can't imagine a more backward way of thinking about the Oscar telecast. People can find out who won easily online. They cannot hear acceptance speeches of musical numbers that way, easily. they can't even see the fashuions, except in still photos 'easily'.
The truth is i was always surprised by the fact that the Oscars do so well. I've always found the award showa to be painfully boring. As i said i would prefer every award show to be like this year's Golden Globes. Just announce the winners: no stupid speeches, no commercial breaks every 5 minutes, no bad presenters, no stupid "jokes" etc.
I was with you until you said it should be more like the Golden Globes. The ratings for which are not exactly booming either, you might note.
I've said like this year's Golden Globes. Just a press conference

Sorry, my bad, the last sentence should have said: you can find out who won online, so if that is all you care about, then there is less reason to watch.

True. Already said that, but true.

Not right away, no. But it'll all be on YouTube soon enough. And since the musical numbers all suck, seeing them in a smaller low-res format can only help.

They can't really see them during the broadcast itself--most of the attendees are sitting down, and the ones onstage are usually shown in long shots for a moment, and then they cut to a clip.
Frankly, you get a much better look at the fashions from still photos.
There is no one reason why the ratings are declining--but people should remember that movie attendance is LIKEWISE declining, year after year.
Can't blame people for being unenthused about what Hollywood is producing lately. Rewarding the edgier lower-budget films will hopefully lead to edgier big-budget films. But the decline may be unstoppable.

ITA that Nascar should be a winner for that That race was scheduled to start since 3:30EST, for that to have 10 million viewers still at Oscar time. Still waiting watching umbrellas and interviews is a winner.

NBC a no show tonight.
Yeah, I don't get people bashing on BIG BROTHER..its had to face AMERICAN IDOL and now the OSCARS. It can't really catch a break and you know what...the show is damn entertaining and thats why I watch TV for. I'm glad it came on in the winter as well.
I am just not comfortable with this winter edition of BB...it should air only in the summer.

I do put everything in perspective, but still think the OScars deserve a position mention. Maybe "Down but Not Out" might have been better.

Yeah, i have to disagree finally with Marc. There's no way Oscars is a winner, it's a HUGE loser. You have to see everything in perspective. I mean if all it counts are the numbers than every show on CW would be a loser on Marc's list
Aliens in America was the BIG winner for The CW last night. Maybe people are sampling it?!?!?
Good numbers for Dexter considering how everybody is against it to take it off. I like the show
Bad numbers for the Oscars.
CW Now IS FINALLY GONE!

They should just make Big Brother a year round tradition. Combine it with the Paradise Hotel concept and bring a new person on after someone is evicted. The longer you stay, the more $$ you get. It's always boring at the end anyhow when there are only 3 or 4 left.

The only part I watched of the Oscars was the opening with Jon (which was eh, could have been a lot better) then well I did stick around for the first award, and well if everyone made their speeches as short as the person who won the 1st award, it would be a better show, she really was up there for 20 seconds, plus does anyone really care about film editing? or best costume design. I don't, thats why I just wait until the morning and look at the list of winners.
