Any predictions for Apprenctice numbers tonight? I originally expected it to bomb, but with NBC's numbers this week, I'm beginning to think it might do relatively well. I'll guess 10 million viewers with a 3.5 in the demo.

At least some work is put into making PD.

Work, yes. Brains, no. Roll Eyes

quote:
These reality shows are the worst thing now on television

But they're SUPPOSED to be bad. That's what people like about them. The total lack of pretension. "You know you only turned on the TV to forget about your problems, not to be reminded of them, so why should we beat our brains out trying to turn out something inspired and clever 20odd times a year when we know you'll watch anything that gives you an excuse to sit down and turn your brain off? If you were really interested in stimulating your mind, you'd be reading a book, or going outside and doing something!"

That's the rationale behind it, and a very sound (if evil) rationale it has proven to be.

PD is mindless pablum on a huge budget, with expensive camera shots, and lots of postproduction work. It's prettier than reality TV--I just don't agree it's better.

But I don't blame the writers--they gave the networks what the networks wanted--the problem with reality TV is that it doesn't repeat well, and too much of it lowers a network's cachet with the critics, and certain well-heeled demo groups. Doesn't sell on DVD at all. So they keep shooting for something with mindless entertainment appeal that can ALSO appeal to critics, and win awards, and flatter shallow people into thinking they're doing something other than turning their brains off when they're watching it.

PD was a good effort in this vein, but for whatever reason, American isn't quite dumbed-down enough to buy it. Yet.

Maybe next time.

Wink

In the game I guessed 9.1 mil with a 3.1 demo and I believe I overestimated it. I still stick with my original prediction that it will tank. Reviews/reactions to this show on different boards is terrible. Law and Order has a built in fanbase and really good promos to help peak interest. The Apprentice really doesn't have either.

after 3 nites:

abc	7.7	2.8
cbs	6.8	1.7
nbc	9.3	3.0
fox	9.1	3.4

They won't hit a 2.5 this week -- no better than 3rd place. This is nothing to crow about.

So, if you multiply the demo number (in a percent form ex. 3.8 = .038) by the number of Adults 18-49 you get:

4.72 million Adults 18-49 (last year)
4.98 million Adults 18-49 (this year)

So, it grew by 2.37 million total viewers but only about 260,000, or so, in the demo.

So then, you were completely aware that it grew in both viewers AND demo, yet you managed to put a negative spin on it as 'skewing older'. Roll Eyes

I wouldn't be too sure about that. They still have tonights Dramas which should do decent numbers, plus on Sunday, they'll have run over Football and a BIG 60 minutes piece with Roger Clemens

Leno 5.3 / Dave 4.4

Also, Conan toped Ferguson (2.4 v 1.9)

Heck, even Daily saw a bump from because of it, almost topping Kimmel with a 1.4 rating

People probably tuned in to see the 'crash and burn' potential, but leno outrates Letterman all the time anyway, so last night's ratings should be no surprise. It is bad news for the writers though, as it will get all the latenight talkshows understanding that people would rather watch audience interaction (ala Oprah and Jerry Springer) than written monologs of 'topical' humor.
