Prime-Time Ratings:
Tuesday 1/01/08

The following results are based on the fast affiliate ratings (Live Plus Same Day data)

-Total Viewers:
Fox: 11.88 million, NBC: 11.07, CBS: 8.38, ABC: 6.35, CW: 1.40

-Adults 18-49:
Fox: 4.7 rating/11 share, NBC: 4.3/10, ABC: 2.2/ 5, CBS: 1.9/ 4, CW: 0.5/ 1

----------

Note: Any prior rating results are based on the final nationals. Also, since the level of DVR penetration has increased from 9 percent in early 2006-07 to approximately 20 percent at present, the overall results may be negatively impacted.

----------

-Yesterday’s Winners:
Sugar Bowl: Hawaii vs. Georgia (Fox), The Biggest Loser (NBC), Law & Order: SVU (NBC)

-Honorable Mention:
NCIS R (CBS)

-Yesterday’s Losers (Excluding Repeats):
Just For Laughs (ABC), According to Jim (ABC)

----------

-Ratings Breakdown:
Fox led this first evening of 2008, with the prime-time portion of the annual Sugar Bowl (Hawaii vs. Georgia) at an estimated 11.88 million viewers and a 4.7 rating/11 share. One year earlier, The Sugar Bowl on Fox (LSU vs. Notre Dame) averaged a heftier 14.42 million viewers and a 5.2/14 in the demo on Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2007.

As a reminder, results for any live sporting event are always approximate.

NBC finished second in both total viewers and adults 18-49 with its combination of the two-hour season-premiere of The Biggest Loser (Viewers: 10.45 million; A18-49: 4.3/10), which picked up steam in every half hour and was a vast improvement from recent season openers, and Law & Order: SVU (Viewers: #1, 12.32 million; A18-49: #1t, 4.3/11). Take a look at the half-hour track for The Biggest Loser.

The Biggest Loser (NBC)
8:00 p.m. – Viewers: 8.50 million (#3), A18-49: 3.3/ 8 (#2t)
8:30 p.m. – Viewers: 9.49 million (#3), A18-49: 4.0/ 9 (#2)
9:00 p.m. – Viewers: 11.05 million (#2), A18-49: 4.6/11 (#2)
9:30 p.m. – Viewers: 12.72 million (#2), A18-49: 5.5/12 (#1)

Next was CBS with its line-up of a repeat of NCIS (Viewers: #1, 11.71 million; A18-49: #4, 2.3/ 6), a repeat of The Unit (Viewers: #3, 7.38 million; A18-49: #3, 1.8/ 4) and a Tuesday edition of 48 Hours Mystery (Viewers: #3, 6.05 million; A18-49: #3, #4, 1.6/ 4).

ABC (which is approximate due to the Rose Bowl bleeding into prime-time) opened the evening with the final portion of The Rose Bowl (USC vs. Illinois) at an estimated 9.34 million viewers (#3) and a 3.2/ 7 among adults 18-49 (#3) from 8-9 p.m. That number includes the post game show. Next were the season premieres of Just For Laughs (Viewers: #4, 4.96 million; A18-49: #4, 1.7/ 4), which plays better in the summer, and According to Jim (Viewers: #4, 4.64 million; A18-49: #3t, 1.7/ 4) from 9-10 p.m., followed by a repeat of Boston Legal at 4.91 million viewers (#4) and a 1.7/ 5 among adults 18-49 (#3) at 10 p.m. Why ABC needed to renew According to Jim is beyond me.

Last, and very least, were repeats of the CW’s Crowned: The Mother of all Beauty Pageants (Viewers: 1.43 million; A18-49: 0.6/ 1) and One Tree Hill (Viewers: 1.37 million; A18-49: 0.6/ 1). Season No. 5 of One Tree Hill begins on Tuesday, Jan. 8 at 8 p.m. ET.

Once again, ABC has played the squander-the-Rose-Bowl-demo game. Last season, instead of introducing Knights of Prosperity out of the Rose Bowl, the Alphabet chose America's Funny Videos. This year, the largesse was squandered to the already established Just for Laughs instead of helping introduce a more ratings-challenged show (the Alphabet could have led into Carpoolers instead).

NBC and FOX both had good nights (The Biggest Loser especially...a wowzer was that demo surge to 5.5 in the last half-hour), but CBS has to be concerned that a fresh 48 Hours Mystery didn't perform as well as it has in the past in the Tuesday at 10 pm slot, coming in third and losing in demo to Boston Legal.

When you tote up the sums for the thrice-broadcast episode of Crowned, it gathered up 3.844 million viewers (some of them repeaters, though that's hard to believe) and a 1.5 A18-49. Though not as ample as the Pussycat Dolls three-broadcasts-in-one-week episodes, this total number is probably behind The CW's puzzling decision to renew the series for another cycle.

Has anyone seen an overnight number for MyNetworkTV's "The World Magic Awards" special, which was encored last night.

On its first broadcast, the two-hour special attracted 1.780 million viewers and 0.5 A18-49 on a Friday night, but magic specials have a way of pulling very good numbers for the nascent network.

In the upcoming weeks with CBS going with mostly repeats and ABC going with untested shows that will probably get low ratings (such as Eli Stone), I think NBC has a great chance of coming in 2nd behind FOX in the 18-49 demo.

Isn't most of ABC "Ratings Challenged"??
Well, at least during this rerun filled, writers strike shortened season???

I wouldn't get my hopes up too high for OTH's premiere. Its setting up for a 2 - 2.4 million viewer premiere, with a 1.0 in the 18-49 demo

Crowned is going to pull down OTH's ratings. When AI gets going, OTH is going to struggle to get above 2 million. Crowned's ratings are terrible as always.

According to Jim and Just for Laughs completely tanked. Horrible numbers for a premiere.

I agree. NBC has been promoting hard the fact that they will have all of this new and fresh content for the New Year.

That number may have been better/bigger had the game not been a blowout early. But the same could also be said for the Rose Bowl.

Most of the Bowl games have been big blowouts this holiday season.

If these numbers hold to the 10 million average, NYHunter may be the first ever PIFC Daily Game Winner.

As soon as finals are made available, I will post the final rankings.

With numbers like this, Cavemen may just get a 2nd season. Big Grin

I just read the description of ELI STONE in TV GUIDE and it sounds sort of VIVA LAUGHLINish to me. Originally I was going to give it a sampling but I think I'm going to pass now.

Yikes and I completely agree. These numbers are AWFUL. What was ABC thinking?!
