I was stuck in a hotel room and in a rare moment was forced to watch live tv. I checked out a little of Dance Wars and found it unwatchable. Yet another show trying to be another American Idol. These never worked before and won't again. Numbers will be dipping like crazy next week.
And as for October Road. Monday was the series finale for me. The show had promise at one time, but.... RIP.

Actually, I think AG will be, but it sounds like viewers are not pleased with DW, so its numbers will be down

You are right. I had not realized that Life is Wild was an original episode. Why is anyone delusional enough to think that show should be renewed when it can't break 1 million viewers in first run and gets outrated by an encore of Crowned?

In response to your second point, you are right about the record-setting encore of The World Magic Awards providing juice to MNT's weekly numbers. My point was that on any given night of the week (excepting Fridays), The CW and MyNetworkTV are now running neck and neck,
That really isn't the case. The only night that they were 'neck and neck' was Thursday. MNTV had a big advantage on Tuesday when it set an all-time ratings record with a special. CW has a huge advantage on Friday with regular programming. The two networks are not by any stretch 'neck and neck' on a daily basis.

Of course, this will change when Next Top Model returns (advantaging Wednesday for The CW), but this will likely be offset by the February 4th debut of Paradise Hotel 2 which I expect will put Mondays decisively in MNT's possession.
I doubt Paridise Hotel will be able to beat Pussy Cat Dolls, but even if it does, I REALLY doubt it will be an offset for the kind of ratings ANTM gets for CW. This is similar to your claim that the one time special Magic Awards getting 2.5 million viewers is on par with Smackdown getting 4-5 million viewers every week. All 'wins' are not equal.

The CW has gone from one year ago having 4x the households, 4.5x the viewership and 4x the young adult demo to being just a little bit ahead of MNT today.
You are looking at a week where MNTV set a ratings record and comparing it to what is probably CW's worst week ever, though. Meanwhile, what you are seeing is mostly the effect of CW going down, not MNTV going up. MNTV is making their 'gains' over last year by abandoning original programming. It is a short term 'fix' that allows MNTV to continue as a network placeholder, but it won't lead to long term success. MNTV needs real programming to do that.

The CW in a new direction, letting go of Gilmore Girls, Veronica Mars, Reba and Eight is Enough in favour of a new crop of shows that have underwhelmed in the Nielsens.
CW didn't get rid of Gilmore Girls, the stars of that show killed it themselves. VM was a ratings sinkhole and claiming that it would return to last season's fall ratings rather than where it was headed in the spring is an unlikely conclusion. As for 7th Heaven, hard to say what that show would look like or rate if it had returned in some fashion. The cast was already reworked to bring it back from the dead the first time. There is no guarantee that the cast/writers/etc... would have decided to come back (and at a reasonable cost) even if CW had asked again.

Though Mr. Thomas is most gainfully employed over at the House of Mouse, having produced this seasons Big Shots, and readying Cupid for ABC's fall schedule, Ms. Ostroff should call him up to arrange lunch and see if its not too late to greenlight to series that exceptionally good Veronica Mars: FBI pilot that she took a pass on last June.
Not surprising to me... and pairing the AG finale with the Knight Rider movie is sheer genius...and the summer would be good timing for a Season 2 (another comparision to Fear Factor, since it was originally a summer show)- You can schedule one a week from Mid-June till the first week in September, have a full 13-episode season, and still be done in time for the Olympics...it's enough of a break to not overexpose it too much..

I am sorry to here that you won't be watching October Road anymore. I do agree that this season has been weaker than last, but here is my reason for at least tuning in next week.
BTW what did everyone think of One Tree Hill this evening? It was actually a lot better then I thought. If ABC does cancel OR the CW should consider picking it up, it would fit prefectly with the flash forward version of OTH.

I really liked One Tree Hill, even though I found it a bit depressing in mood...two hours of a downbeat One Tree Hill can be a bit much. HIGHLIGHT OVER SPOILER -> However, all was redeemed with that uplifting father-son ending. I might have missed it, but did we hear during the ep where granddad Dan Scott is? One presumes in prison? I'm not sure I could have continued watching more episodes of the morose Nathan in his wheelchair, which reminded me so of the character in the FOX series Reunion.
And that October Road promo sizzles...HIGHLIGHT OVER SPOILER -> I was wondering when they were going to get it on...and to the Bay City Rollers! Such seventies chic.

I agree that OTH was a bit depressing, but it looks like it will be a little more upbeat next week. I will be interested to see how it does in the ratings.
Looking at final numbers, AG fell 10% in viewers and 19% in the demo from sunday to monday:
week day date network show Viewers 18-49 week 15 Sunday 01/06/08 nbc American Gladiators 12,060 5.9 week 16 Monday 01/07/08 nbc American Gladiators 10,910 4.8
decrease (1,150) (1.1) decrease % -9.5% -18.6%
That's an interesting stat!
As down as I am on the show, I'm wondering if it still might have a chance.
As we enter the all-rerun-and-reality season, and the competition becomes more unpredictable, it may be anybody's ballgame.
FWIW, I spent a good couple of hours on YouTube Saturday night. I found myself watching these shows from Adult Swim I'd never seen before, "Tim And Eric's Awesome Show, Great Job." It's a weird sketch comedy show.
Granted, I'm just one guy, but because of it, I didn't pay any attention to the broadcast networks, and I'll actually be watching Adult Swim now when previously I wouldn't have been.
As we progress into the strike, with broadcast networks being more limited on their options, and the internet becoming more of a factor, ya never know.... AG (or who-knows-what) may have more of a chance of becoming a hit.
The networks may just go for the cheapest programming they can get to make the numbers crunch. And, it may work out for them.
I'm wondering why YouTube hasn't gone onto cable, providing a loop of their most popular, content-safe videos (and, of course, commercials), with a smattering of new videos mixed in. Seems like this would be a great way to monetize...
One Tree Hill was One Tree Hill. It felt exactly the same, just without high school. I guess that is good.
What I did notice was the new graphics package for the CW. That silver and black logo is pretty sleek looking to me. And when they did the next week teaser for One Tree Hill, for some reason I swear I was watch a WB promo.

They had that. It was called Online Nation on the CW. It got the axe after two weeks. Well okay, it wasn't youtube precisely, but it was viral online videos.

Yeah, I think it's gotta be a 24/7 deal on cable, on-demand, the way YouTube is 24/7 online, in order for it to work.
I'd think they could sell a :15 or :30 spot between every video...
Originally posted by AL: Dumont, just a quick question. How did you obtain such a fondness, a love for MNTV? The network really has no identity and has no show that would blow anyone away. And to me, the fact that its numbers are getting so close to CW is more of a sign on how weak the CW is more so than how strong MNTV is doing. UPN and WB were doing far better in their 2nd year than MNTV is doing (I believe). I know that viewing levels are far lower in this day, but still, MNTV's numbers are tiny.
Such a fondness for MNTV would probably be from their two (or three) nights of movies, many of which have never been aired on network television. I have a fondness for films, and while some of the MNT movies are over-played junk, they are more than offset by the extraordinary broadcast premieres...The Cider House Rules, Mulholland Drive, Hotel Rwanda, The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, Something Wild, Whale Rider...I could go on, but those are just a few titles that come to mind that have created an IFC-type brand over MNT movie programming. Last season, when there was not a single regularly scheduled movie night on any of the broadcast networks, MyNetworkTV single-handedly revived the network movie frnachise.
Such a love for MyNetworkTV would have to be the telenovellas, and specifically Wicked Wicked Games. MNT's noble experiment in the telenovella genre was a ratings failure, but I still contend it was because American viewers were not ready to commit 12 hours a week of primetime to two continuing storylines. But MNT learned from their mistakes, and they really had the formula down right, and the costs too ($200K/hour production costs), and I hope when the time is right, MNT might bring the telenovellas back on a limited basis...they do have a stockpile of scripts ready for two more cycles of 130 hours ready to be produced.
As to where MNT is vis-a-vis WB and UPN, yes, they're a bit behind those new networks, but remember that The CW cherrypicked away all the prime affiliates from WB and UPN (except for the FOX-owned outlets), so MNT was left with a bit of a rag-tag network of affils that has had to claw its way back into contention. UPN launched big because of the ratings power of Star Trek: Voyager, whereas Dubba-Dubba You had more limited beginnings and it's slow growth came from really outstanding series development and nurturing.
I'll finish my post by reporting that MyNetworkTV got some good numbers last night:
Celebrity Expose: Britney Spears 1.0HH/2%, 1.420 million viewers, 0.7 A18-49
Meet My Folks (R): 0.6/1%, 0.880 million viewers, 0.4 A18-49
I watched Meet My Folks last night while waiting for Medium to come on, and I rather enjoyed it. All young women would benefit from parental advice, brown paper envelopes and lie-detectors administered by their parents in selecting the appropriate mate. I wonder if MyNetworkTV will do a follow-up episode on how Miss Decastro got on during her holiday with the young man who was all buddy-buddy with her Dad?
