Prime-Time Ratings:
Friday 1/04/08

The following results are based on the fast affiliate ratings (Live Plus Same Day data)

-Total Viewers:
NBC: 7.07 million, ABC: 6.38, Fox: 6.08, CBS: 6.00, CW: 4.07

-Adults 18-49:
NBC: 2.1 rating/6 share, Fox: 2.0/ 6, ABC, CBS and CW: 1.6/ 5 each

----------

Note: Any prior rating results are based on the final nationals. Also, since the level of DVR penetration has increased from 9 percent in early 2006-07 to approximately 20 percent at present, the overall results may be negatively impacted.

----------

-Friday’s Winners:
(Keep in mind that expectations for Friday are diminished due to the lower HUT levels).
1 vs. 100 (NBC), House R (Fox)

-Friday’s Losers (Excluding Repeats):
Friday Night Lights (NBC)

----------

-Ratings Breakdown:
NBC dominated this first Friday of 2007 in total viewers and adults 18-49 with its combination of the season-premiere of 1 vs. 100 (Viewers: #1, 8.59 million; A18-49: #1, 2.4/ 8), Friday Night Lights (Viewers: #3, 5.53 million; A18-49: #2t, 1.8/ 5) and Las Vegas (Viewers: #2, 7.08 million; A18-49: #2, 2.0/ 6). A few observations:

1) It’s great to have 1 vs. 100 back, and congratulations to the million dollar winner! Unlike Deal or No Deal, which is just itching for someone to win the grand prize, 1 vs. 100 beat it to the punch. (And there is no nasty banker present to break a contestant’s good luck charm).
2) Erosion for Friday Night Lights out of 1 vs. 100 was 3.06 million viewers and 25 percent among adults 18-49.
3) Las Vegas is what it is, and that is not much.

ABC finished second overall in total viewers and tied for third with CBS among adults 18-49 with its uneventful line-up of a repeat of Grey’s Anatomy (Viewers: #5, 3.86 million; A18-49: #5, 1.0/ 3), which does not play well in repeats, Women’s Murder Club (Viewers: #1, 7.68 million; A18-49: #2t, 1.8/ 5) and 20/20 (Viewers: #1, 7.60 million; A18-49: #1, 2.1/ 7). Worth noting for Women’s Murder Club was growth out of the Grey’s Anatomy encore of 3.82 million viewers and 80 percent in the demo. As for regularly scheduled 8 p.m. occupant Men in Trees, where is it? With several episodes held back from last season plus the ones already recently produced, shouldn’t there be many more originals?

Fox finished third overall in total viewers and second among adults 18-49 with encore telecasts of Bones (Viewers: #3, 5.87 million; A18-49: #3, 1.7/ 5) and House (Viewers: #2, 6.53 million; A18-49: #1, 2.3/ 7). Success the second (and third) time around for House means it could have solid value in the off-network marketplace.

CBS aired encore telecasts of Ghost Whisperer (Viewers: #2, 6.77 million; A18-49: #2, 1.9/ 6), Moonlight (Viewers: #4, 5.09 million; A18-49: #5, 1.4/ 4) and Numb3rs (Viewers: #3, 6.14 million; A18-49: #3, 1.6/ 5). And the CW capped off the evening with underrated Friday Night Smackdown! at a respectable 4.07 million viewers (#5) and a 1.6/ 5 among adults 18-49 (#4t).

Not great numbers anywhere, but then right now no one has a clue when something is new and something is old. Anyway, I think WMC will definitely(or at the very least has a very good chance of it) be back next season and I'm glad about that. By the same, I'd think Vegas and FNL will need a bit more strike luck to move forward.

The final new episode before the strike. Next week a repeat of Cashmere Mafia airs and then DH repeats take over the slot on the 18th.

Thanks Marc and Brent!

If DH repeats as badly as GA, they might be better off keeping repeats of WMC instead. (DH did fairly well in the repeat it had this season, but I don't know whether that's a normal level for their repeats or not.) Repeats of WMC could at least beat repeats of Moonlight.

Speaking of Moonlight repeats, ouch! I realize that it's not a procedural, so it's not going to repeat as well as one of the CSIs, but if CBS has anything else to air then (or at 8, moving GW to 9), they should try it.

Didn't ABC say MIT would return on Wednesdays at 10pm after Cashmere Mafia finished its seven episode run? MIT has ELEVEN (yup) episodes left to air. If Supernanny can keep up the numbers it posted this week, MIT could certainly beat out CSI: NY repeats in the timeslot (I can't for the life of me remember what NBC will be airing...)

I'm not so sure about that. Even if it got the ratings it got last season (it averaged 8.4 million viewers), CSI: NY could still easily beat it in repeats (which are generally 10 million+). It will probably win the demo (last year's average was 2.8).

NBC will be airing Law & Order (which could bring the CSI: NY repeats down some).

Check out the repeat numbers for CM and CSI:NY this week. They were not pretty and 8 million viewers and a 3 in the demo will be beating it by the time originals are used up, which will be when Men in Trees is around. Plus, Trees will likely face several L&O repeats so I'm guessing it will not be facing much.

Its certainly not a solid repeater, but its not even a solid show in first run either so this is expected.

Let's make a deal. I won't pretend that ABC's numbers the Wednesday before Thanksgiving are indicative of how the Wednesday shows perform in general, if you'll stop pretending that one bad night for CBS's Wednesday repeats says how they will always repeat from now on. OK? If those low numbers continue after they finish airing the new episodes, I will be very surprised, but I will concede that you are right. Until then, we'll just have to agree to disagree on whether last week's numbers were a trend or an anomaly. I will continue to base my statements on how the shows usually repeat.

Men in Trees has aired 9 episodes this season. To date, only 1 episode topped 6.5million viewers. Even in first run, it will struggle to compete with the CBS encores.

Wednesday night was way different than Thanksgiving Eve. NBC, ABC, and Fox's lineup proved that. Even GG grew out of its lead in for the CW. Face it. CBS shows will not be repeating all that great once viewers realize there are no more new episodes.
