So one week the numbers are up and it should be renewed, the next week the numbers are down and it should be canceled. Geez, this is worse than the network execs.

Anyhow, next week it's facing The Bachelor and will be up again. ROE still has similar numbers when facing the same type of competition.

Will CBS get as much out of a new sitcom as they will Christine on another night next year? That's the real question and my guess is no.

The difference is within 10% of the two. Its really not that big of a deal. Both are solid younger skewing performers. Both should return, but both should make way for a new show in the plump 9:30 slot next fall.

Overnights from Marc's newsletter -- the revised ABC lineup did considerably better than that scheduling mess ABC had last week -- based on these results, get ready for more DWTS recap shows at 8pm on ABC. And Primetime: WWYD is a winner -- much better than The Bachelor did on Monday, and I bet its demo is a lot stronger too. Also stronger than usual 10pm Tuesday occupant BL -- sorry BL fans! And the series finale of Jericho only getting a 3.4 is an embarassment!!!

Prime-Time Metered Market Tuesday Ratings:
Idol Lifts Fox to Victory; Strong Dancing With the Stars on ABC

Tuesday 3/25/08

Household Rating/Share
Fox: 12.3/19, ABC: 8.6/13, NBC: 5.5/ 9, CBS: 4.4/ 7, CW: 1.2/ 2

----------

-Percent Change From the Year-Ago Evening (Tuesday, March 27, 2007):
ABC: + 6, Fox: -19, CBS: -24, NBC: -27, CW: -40

----------

Note: The fast affiliate results for Tuesday will be posted at PIFeedback by 12 p.m. ET. Go to the website, click on Ratings Box (the first category), then Last Night’s Results, and Tuesday, March 25, 2008.

----------

-Yesterday’s Winners:
American Idol (Fox), Dancing With the Stars (ABC)

-Disappointing:
‘Til Death (Fox)

-Yesterday’s Losers (Excluding Repeats):
Beauty and the Geek (CW), Big Brother 9 (CBS), Jericho (CBS)

----------

-Ratings Breakdown:
Fox, of course, led the Tuesday troops care of American Idol, which scored a hefty 14.3 rating/22 share in the overnights from 8-9:30 p.m. Here is the half-hour breakdown:

American Idol (Fox)
8:00 p.m. 13.1/21 (#1)
8:30 p.m. 14.8/23 (#1)
9:00 p.m. 15.1/22 (#1)

As for the show itself, here are my picks for tonight’s bottom three: Chikezie, Ramiele Malubay and Carly Smithson. Although I would love to see deer-in-headlights Jason Castro sent packing (John Travolta…is that you in there?), and am tired of “gosh-golly” David Archuleta, let’s be honest here. Chikezie was a snore last night, Ramiele is weaker than perennial bottom three occupant Kristy Lee Cook, and I am not necessarily sure artsy Carly appeals to middle America. We’ll see what happens tonight.

American Idol led into an original installment of ‘Til Death, which dipped to a second-place 6.5/10 at 9:30 p.m. Retention out of the last half-hour of American Idol was just 43 percent.

ABC was also on the map last night care of the live Dancing With the Stars results show, which scored an healthy 11.4/17 in the overnights from 9-10 p.m., building by half-hour as follows:

Dancing With the Stars (ABC)
9:00 p.m. 10.0/10 (#2)
9:30 p.m. 12.7/19 (#1)

Keep in mind, of course, that American Idol ended at 9 p.m. As for the departures of Monica Seles (doesn’t she look like Celine Dion?) and Penn Gillette, neither was a surprise.

Earlier in the evening on ABC was a Dancing With the Stars recap, which was second in the 8 p.m. hour with a 7.1/12. Newsmagazine Primetime: What Would You Do? got a boost airing out of Dancing With the Stars, with a dominant 7.2/12 in the overnights at 10 p.m.

Despite facing the killer combination of American Idol and Dancing With the Stars, another two-hour edition of NBC’s The Biggest Loser 5 scored a consistent 5.1/ 8 in the overnights from 8-10 p.m., building in each half-hour as follows:

The Biggest Loser 5 (NBC)
8:00 p.m. 4.3/ 7 (#4)
8:30 p.m. 4.6/ 7 (#4)
9:00 p.m. 5.1/ 8 (#3)
9:30 p.m. 6.2/ 9 (#3)

That led into a repeat of Law & Order: SVU at a second-place 6.4/11 at 10 p.m.

CBS got off to a respectable start with a repeat of NCIS at a 6.3/10 in the overnights at 8 p.m. But the news was bleak for the Eye net from 9-11 p.m. with its combination of Big Brother 9 (3.4/ 5) and the series-finale of Jericho (#3, 3.4/ 6), which would have had a better chance of survival if the network put it back in the Wednesday 8 p.m. hour.

Last, and very least, was CW duo Beauty and the Geek (1.3/ 2) and a repeat of Reaper (1.2/ 2). Worth noting – or really not noting – last night was 73 percent of the schedule of a non-scripted nature. Idol, Dancing With the Stars, Big Brother, The Biggest Loser and Beauty and the Geek is just too much on one evening.

Marc, I think you meant to say "keep in mind American Idol ended at 9:30pm.

And yes, Monica was absolutely not a surprise, and on the men's side, it was between Penn and Adam Carolla, and I'm glad it was Penn -- I can't stand the guy.

Monica = good sport
Penn = bad, BAD sport

Must I remind you that Boston Legal's post-Dancing numbers were very similar to that this past fall and that Primetime was really no stronger on Tuesdays at 10 when Dancing wasn't around?

I like BL, I really do. But I don't think you are correct. Here's BL's entire season of ratings:

Week Viewers Demo
----------------------------------------
09/25/07 10.30 M 2.6
10/02/07 10.43 M 2.9
10/09/07 10.58 M 2.7
10/16/07 9.78 M 2.7
10/30/07 11.40 M 3.0
11/06/07 10.62 M 2.6
11/13/07 11.36 M 2.8
12/04/07 8.62 M 2.2
12/11/07 9.02 M 2.5
12/18/07 7.65 M 2.1
01/01/08(R) 4.81 M 1.5
01/15/08 7.43 M 2.0
01/22/08 8.30 M 2.2
01/29/08(R) 5.24 M 1.3
02/12/08 7.25 M 1.8
02/19/08 7.43 M 1.8

According to this, the best BL did with DWTS as a lead-in last Fall was 11.40 million viewers and a 3.0 in the demo, both on October 30. And it only managed to go over 11 million one other time, and it did not manage to even reach 3.0 in the demo again, dropping under 10 million and a 2.6 in the demo, even with the DWTS lead-in. And it did this while DWTS was stronger last Fall.

I don't know about viewers (it should be right in the ballpark with what BL's been getting), but Primetime got higher than a 3.0 in the demo even without DWTS as a lead-in, so I'm sure it'll get more than that last night.

This doesn't mean that BL will get cancelled or anything -- but I think both BL and The Bachelor are improperly used as lead-outs for DWTS, that's all.

It's not done dropping.

Well let me just say this:
1. Primetime and BL definitely skew differently. If ABC likes what Primetime gives after Dancing go ahead. Air it there. Move BL to another night where it can have no lead in and still perform. Second, as far as the demos are concerned, hasn't it been noted that rich people trump young people and last I checked, rich people like myself watch BL. Agreed that both are not fitting lead outs for Dancing so lets not get into a tizzy when neither one does all that hot after it.

CBS made the brilliant decision to announce Jericho's cancellation right before it aired. It made me think what's the point. Wait for the DVD. Watch rerun of SVU or movie or bed.
