Prime-Time Ratings:
Thursday 4/17/08

The following results are based on the fast affiliate ratings (Live Plus Same Day data)

-Total Viewers:
CBS: 10.75 million, Fox: 9.36, NBC: 7.64, ABC: 4.79, CW: 2.79

-Adults 18-49:
NBC: 3.4 rating/10 share, CBS: 3.0/ 9, Fox: 2.8/ 8, ABC: 1.5/ 4, CW: 1.1/ 3

--------------

Note: Any prior rating results are based on the final nationals. Since the level of DVR penetration has increased from 13 percent at this same point last year to approximately 23 percent at present, the overall results may be negatively impacted.

---------------

-Yesterday’s Winners:
Survivor: Micronesia (CBS), CSI R (CBS), The Office (NBC), Don’t Forget the Lyrics (Fox), Without a Trace R (CBS)

-Honorable Mention:
Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader (Fox)

-Yesterday’s Losers (Excluding Repeats):
Eli Stone (ABC)

----------

-Ratings Breakdown:
Despite airing repeats of CSI and Without a Trace, CBS was still the most-watched network on Thursday. NBC was first among adults 18-49 -- 13 percent above CBS. Improved Fox was second in total viewers and third in the demo, while ABC and the CW ranked fourth and fifth, respectively. Keep in mind, of course, that Grey’s Anatomy on ABC is still missing from the schedule. It returns in originals next week, leading into the relocated Lost.

Before we get into the results, let’s talk about CBS’ Survivor: Micronesia, which left cocky Ozzie gasping for air (so to speak) when sly Cirie pulled a fast one and managed to get the immunity idol-holding superstar voted out. Personally, I think this was one of the best moments of the 16-season old series.

Delving into the numbers, Survivor: Micronesia won the 8 p.m. hour, with 12.09 million viewers and a 3.8 rating/12 share among adults 18-49 from 8-9 p.m. Comparably, Survivor set in Fiji on the year-ago evening averaged 13.33 million viewers and a 4.5/13 in the demo. Tied for second was Fox’s Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? and NBC comedies My Name is Earl and 30 Rock as follows:

8-9 p.m. Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? (Fox)
Viewers: 9.19 million (#2), A18-49: 2.5/ 8 (#3)

8 p.m. My Name is Earl (NBC)
Viewers: 6.77 million (#3), A18-49: 2.6/ 9 (#2)

8:30 p.m. 30 Rock
Viewers: 6.42 million (#3), A18-49: 2.8/ 8 (#2)

The positive news for 30 Rock, of course, was growth of 8 percent out of My Name is Earl. But, let’s be honest: this is no big hit. And it never will be.

Rounding off the 8 p.m. hour was a repeat of ABC’s Lost (Viewers: #4, 3.74 million; A18-49: #5, 1.1/ 3), and Smallville on the CW (Viewers: #5, 3.49 million; A18-49: #4, 1.4/ 4).

Minus Grey’s Anatomy, a repeat of CBS’ CSI was first in total viewers (10.69 million), but third among adults 18-49 (2.8/ 7). First in the hour among adults 18-49 were NBC sitcoms The Office (Viewers: #2, 9.81 million; A18-49: #1, 4.9/13) and Scrubs (Viewers: #3, 7.31 million; A18-49: #1, 3.7/10). Worth noting for The Office, of course, was growth out of 30 Rock of a hefty 75 percent in the demo. But after watching, and loving, last week’s dinner party themed episode, the problem with last night is why the show itself is not a mass appeal hit. There is no one to like on The Office. Steve Carell as Michael is completely obnoxious and the employees of Dunder Mifflin leave very little to be desired. Then again, can you really blame them while working in an environment like that?

Also in the 9 p.m. hour was Fox’s Don’t Forget the Lyrics (Viewers: #2, 9.53 million; A18-49: #2, 3.2/ 9), another repeat telecast of ABC’s Lost (Viewers: #4, 4.49 million; A18-49: #4, 1.5/ 4), which is always worth revisiting the second time around, and a repeat of the CW’s Supernatural (Viewers: #5, 2.10 million; A18-49: #5, 0.8/ 2).

Tied for first at 10 p.m. was a repeat of CBS’ Without a Trace and NBC’s ER as follows:

Without a Trace R (CBS)
Viewers: 9.47 million (#1), A18-49: 2.4/ 7 (#2)

ER (NBC)
Viewers: 7.75 million (#2), A18-49: 3.1/ 9 (#1)

Last was the season, or series-finale of ABC’s Eli Stone at 6.13 million viewers and a 2.0/ 6 among adults 18-49. Based on the results, I predict this is the last we will see of Eli Stone.

Sure, Marc, rip the last chapter out of the book so we can't read it.

Yes, please Marc. There seem to be some numbers missing. Half-hours would be great too.

Agreed and it's a perfect example of why this show is still popular and should remain a Thursday night fixture for years to come.

Ozzie's "Daggar of Death" stare back at the tribe when they ousted him was so awesome it will never be forgotten and neither will Eliza's reactions during the ouster...I take back any negative thing I ever said about her-those expressions elevated the show to a completly other level.

As a few of the others have said Marc, I think a few of your 9 PM and 10 PM numbers got cut off.

NBC: 30 Rock was able to bump up .1 in the demo with AI out of the way. The Office had another fantastic night with Grey's missing. 4.9! Tied with last week for second highest rating this season. The real test comes next week.

Fox: 5th grader is losing a little steam but still solid.

CBS: Speaking of losing steam- survivor can't get higher demo numbers against 5th grader than it did against Idol? I definately expected a bump last night in the demo. CBS should be disappointed in that respect.

Is that a record for Total Viewers??? It's darn good.

For all those doubting the pull of Idol, look at Lyrics numbers. Lyrics pulled in greater numbers than 5th Grader by featuring Kimberley Locke, season 2 semi-singer. Just imagine if they get Chris Daughtry or Carrie Underwood on that show. Ratings would be phenominal.

I'm not sure there are two more likeable characters on TV than Jim and Pam. Who's more likeable, Jim and Pam or the two and a half men on Two and a Half Men? I'd say Jim and Pam hands down.

ER is in pathetic shape. 3.1 against a repeat of WAT.

I have a feeling lyrics pulled in greater numbers than 5th grader by airing in the 9pm hour.

Survivor was a great episode; definitely one of the best this season. Could Eliza's mouth have opened any wider?

Kimberley Locke on Don't Forget the Lyrics was GREAT. I don't normally watch this show, but tuned in for her. She was fabulous - very gutsy to go for the $1 million. Sad to see she didn't get it, but it was a very entertaining hour of TV. I wonder why she is isn't a bigger star....

Can't wait for Ugly Betty to return next week.

That was the best "Survivor" I've seen in years! This "Fans vs. Favorites" edition is so much better than the last one. Can't wait for next week!
