Fox wins the week in sweeps
from medialifemagazine.com

For the week ended Nov. 18, the second full week of sweeps, Fox took first place among adults 18-49 with a 3.4 rating and 9 share, followed by ABC and CBS in a second-place tie at 3.3/9. NBC was in fourth at a still-competitive 3.1/8, followed by the CW at 1.2/3.

It marked Fox’s first weekly November sweeps win since the week of Nov. 16, 1998, back when “X-Files” and “Beverly Hills, 90210” were still on the air.

For FOX winning a week during November Sweeps is like eating the icing on the cake before dinner. Somehow lost with all the arguments on the board between CBS and ABC proponents about who can piss further is the almost forgone conclusion that half through the winter FOX will be killing both nets in the demo and might even catch CBS in viewers by the end of the season.

As for the argument itself, I accept the fact that demo is more important than viewers. What I don't understand is why so many ABC fans seem to need to explain away those good demos when they belong to CBS. Remember last year it was CBS who was second for the season. And if it is total demos that count the most then how old a show skews should not matter.

True..... True!

I myself is in the 20's and many of my friends also watch CM. So i really don't know what you are trying to say by that statement

yes, but you and your friends are not in the majority, most people in their 20s watch something other that CM, which is proved by the fact PP always wins in the 18-34 demo Big Grin

Wrong again buddy. CM won the demo and the night last week also. So that proves CM had the most viewers and the most viewers in the demo you brag about Wink So where is your logic now Wink

thats because most of the viewers in that demo for CM are 35+, and that is proved by the relatively low number of CM's 18-34 demo, but next week, PP will kick some serious a**

Wrong again it never has relatively "low" numbers. It is always 2nd in the demo so how low can they be Wink And last week and last night it won the night in the demo and also won tin total viewers wich it almost everytime does Big Grin

you all can fight about csi vs greys all you want...its quite pointless right now...

greys is far superior in the demos, csi is somewhat superior in the ratings/viewers...

this year greys ad dollars are higher than csi's (no brainer) but greys is down double digits from last year in the demos while csi is off about 8%

i believe when they created the ad dollars they took into count that csi ( a show in its 8th year) would slide some, so its ad dollars were probably adjusted to that

i also believe that greys ad dollars were tied into it winning the hour outright in every demographic

since the beginning of the season greys has lost almost everyweek to csi in viewers/ratings and a few in the 25-54 demos (which is cbs' target audience) and although greys has easily won the 18-49 demo its lead has shrunk from last year.

further complicating things is abc's inability to win thursday nights in the demos as ugly betty is no longer a threat to survivor (a show in its 16th season) which easily (yes easily) beats UB, plus big shots has been a major let down...so much that greys was going over 7 minutes (probably to make good on some ad dollars)

abc and cbs are locked into thursday battle...cbs' shows are all growing older and they are all showing their age....abc is imo in worse shape...greys is an island to itself, if it does not find a strong ally on the night it is very possible that the erosion this show has had this year will continue.

While the advertisers might care more about first run episodes, they put commercials into the repeats as well. So, they ultimately care just as much about the repeat ratings. When first run AND repeats are taken into account, CSI looks much stronger than Grey's. I am quite sure that the ad cost for Grey's will come down considerably in the winter/spring/summer when ABC is out of fresh episodes.

As for the ad cost this season: it is hard to believe that Grey's has lived up to what the advertisers expected at that cost. The 'make goods' Grey's is covering by running long each week might be, in part, make goods on its own shortcomings in the ratings. If not, then once again the network will be wrapping the 'make goods' around into the following year. That is an advertising cycle problem that will hit critical mass soon. At some point, shows will be running all year with nothing but makegood ads from the prior year. The only way to open up ad space for th4e next season will be to refund the companies for the prior year's ad spending.
