-Ratings Breakdown:
ABC and CBS shared Sunday bragging rights, with CBS first in the overnights and ABC No. 1 in total viewers and adults 18-49. Football on NBC finished second in the overnights and adults 18-49, and a still solid third in total viewers, while Fox aired a night of all repeats. As usual, the CW could not compete.

Due to an estimated 15-minute delay caused by an NFL Football overrun, results for CBS are approximate and only the overnights are reported for the individual program results. On that note, the Eye net opened the evening with 60 Minutes at an approximate (and well above-average) 13.2/21 in the overnights from 7:15-8:15 p.m., followed by The Amazing Race 10 (#3, 8.7/13 from 8:15-9:15 p.m.), Cold Case (#3, 10.0/15 from 9:15-10:15 p.m.) and Without A Trace (#2, 9.9/17 from 10:15-11:15 p.m.).

ABC opened the evening on an above-average note courtesy of America’s Funniest Home Videos at a second-place 7.0/11 in the overnights, 11.98 million viewers and a 3.5/10 among adults 18-49 at 7 p.m. That led into Extreme Makeover: Home Edition at a 9.1/13 in the overnights (#3), 15.83 million viewers (#1) and a 5.5/13 among adults 18-49 (#1) at 8 p.m. Although the vastly improved Desperate Housewives dominated (as usual) at 9 p.m., with a 13.9/20 in the overnights, 21.14 million viewers and an 8.3/19 among adults 18-49, lead-out Brothers & Sisters continues to squander the opportunity at an 8.7/14 in the overnights (#3), 12.67 million viewers (#3) and a 5.0/13 among adults 18-49 (#2). Comparably, that put retention for Brothers & Sisters out of Desperate Housewives of just 63 percent in the overnights, and 60 percent in both total viewers and adults 18-49.

Sunday Night Football on NBC (Dallas vs. Carolina) averaged a competitive 12.4/19 in the overnights from 8:15-11:15 p.m., with an approximate 14.91 million viewers and a 5.8/14 among adults 18-49 in prime time. The football pre-game averaged an estimated 5.8/ 9 in the overnights from 7-8:15 p.m. As a reminder, fast national results for any live sporting event are always approximate.

A night of all repeats on Fox finished fourth in every half-hour. A 7 p.m. edition of The Simpsons kicked-off the evening with a 3.2/ 5 in the overnights, 3.86 million viewers and a 1.6/ 4 among adults 18-49 at 7 p.m.; followed by a Sunday edition of ‘Til Death (Overnights: 3.1/ 5; Viewers: 3.93 million; A18-49: 1.7/ 4), regularly scheduled The Simpsons (Overnights: 4.0/ 6, Viewers: 5.38 million; A18-49: 2.5/ 6), American Dad (Overnights: 3.3/ 5; Viewers: 4.61 million; A18-49: 2.2/ 5), Family Guy (Overnights: 3.7/ 5; Viewers: 5.13 million; A18-49: 2.5/ 6) and The War at Home (Overnights: 2.8/ 4; Viewers: 3.63 million; A18-49: 1.6/ 4). Despite disappointing results for ‘Til Death, Fox has placed an additional script order.

Over at the CW, 7th Heaven is the only series generating any interest on Sunday (and it isn’t much) with a 2.6/ 4 in the overnights, 3.14 million viewers and a 1.1/ 2 at 8 p.m. Comparably, that was double the performance of a repeat of lead-in Supernatural (Overnights: 1.3/ 2; Viewers: 1.67 million; A18-49: 0.5/ 1 at 7 p.m.), but considerably less than year-ago occupant Charmed (Overnights: 3.4/ 5; Viewers: 4.32 million; A18-49: 1.9/ 4 on Oct. 30, 2005). A repeat of America’s Next Top Model capped off the evening for the CW with a mere 1.6/ 2 in the overnights, 1.61 million viewers and a 0.7/ 2 among adults 18-49 at 9 p.m.

I think you're being too harsh on Brothers & Sisters. I understand that given Desperate Housewives it could be better, but not every show is a total hit such as Grey's Anatomy. Brothers is hanging in there on total viewers, which is more than Boston Legal did on this time period. Also, Brothers & Sisters is number two on the key demo (18-49). So again, the show is doing great. It's not a hit, but it's doing better than expected.

Point well taken, tvfan182002. And let me add that the retention is similar to Without a Trace out of CSI in the early days. As for the show itself, personally I'm becoming addicted. Brothers & Sisters is getting better each week.

Totally agree...and with Everwood's Greg Berlanti as executive producer the show should increase its ratings since it gets better and better each week.

But could somebody explain to me why Desperate Housewives built up by 1.5 million viewers though last week's episode was pretty bad and the show lost steam every week since the season premiere aired.

Marc you are being way too freaking hard on Brothers&Sisters. Nobody expected Grey's Anatomy numbers from this show. In fact it was called the most troubled show. The show actually stablized last week and it now went up in it's highest viewership in few weeks. It is going uphill versus a decline. This is much better then ABC is doing with the Nine or Six Degrees. It is the third highest rated show of the fall behind Betty and Heroes. Marc what were expecting a Grey's Anatomy phenom numbers. It is doing better then Boston Legal did when DH was higher. ABC made the right decision. I loved Grey's after DH but they needed Grey's on a different night. ABC did the balliest move of the fall. Everyone thought Grey's on Thursday was a risk but now ABC/McPherson stand to make millions off of Grey's on Thursdays but it is nurturing a future hit in B&S. I guarantee with more acclaim, emmy nods that this show could be the best on TV. Greg Berlanti is a genius and brings magic. Marc damn you are a tough, I think you were expecting Grey's Anatomy part 2.

I'll give a "thumbs up" for Brothers & Sisters also. I think the cast is perfect and there are enough detailed stories to keep this show fresh for years. And I think Sally Field is amazing.

Marc is not saying the show is bad. I agree it is a loser when it comes to the ratings....60% retention....horrible!!

I don't think 60% retention is that bad coming out of a show like Desperate Housewives. That show is a powerhouse. I think people are comparing it to how Grey's did way too much.

Well, come on people, Marc has said that he finds the show is getting better each week creatively. And he didn't label it a loser, just could be doing better. Which, from a ratings POV, it could (no one expects another Grey's, but Grey's showed that something that follows a megahit like Housewives can be, itself, a megahit... so while it's not expected, it's still possible, and it would be nice to see a show of such escalating quality as B&S do better than 63% retenion).

It could definitely be worse. I think ABC has something here with Brothers & Sisters. But why was America's Funniest Videos rated so high last night? And does anyone even care about The Simpsons anymore?

Marc, can you confirm or refute that Brothers & Sisters is doing better than Boston Legal (which should indeed be the benchmark) did in the same timeslot?

From my recollection, I'm not convinced B & S is actually doing better than BL did, but it seems comparable in both absolute numbers and retention out of DH.

Once Sunday Night Football comes to an end and NBC actually has to program the hour with entertainment/reality programming, a real indication of the ratings potential for Brothers & Sisters will show. IMO, with such a great cast and Greg Berlanti this is a good show.

Hey Vemon, Brothers & Sisters is doing better than Boston Legal was. Based on the same amount of weeks into the season, here are the results:

Boston Legal
Viewers: 11.75 million, A18-49: 4.6/11

-----

2006
Desperate Housewives
Viewers: 21.65 million, A18-49: 8.8/20

Brothers & Sisters
Viewers: 13.43 million, A18-49: 5.4/13

Also, it should be noted that Brothers & Sisters is the highest indexed show in upscale households (the percent of B&S's audience in $100K+ households), has the highest median incoming of any show on network television, and is the fourth highest rated in that particular demographic (behind only Desperate, Grey's, and CSI... this is all per MAGNA Global). That's an audience advertisers LOVE so I don't think the show is in too much danger (and thank goodness for that).
