Prime Time Ratings:
Friday 9/14/07

The following results are based on the fast affiliate ratings (Live Plus Same Day data):

-Total Viewers:
ABC: 5.92 million, NBC and CW: 4.31 each, CBS: 4.20, Fox: 3.88

-Adults 18-49:
ABC: 1.7 rating/6 share, CW: 1.3/ 5, Fox: 1.2/ 4, CBS and NBC: 1.1/ 4 each

---------------

-Ratings Breakdown:
One look at the results on Friday and there is an immediate observation: Fox cannot complete. Despite airing another original telecast of Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? and the premiere of Nashville, Fox finished last overall in total viewers, with under 4 million, and a weak No. 3 among adults 18-49. And the reason for its collapse was the non-scripted Nashville, which opened with a mere (and last-place) 2.72 million viewers and a 0.9 rating/3 share among adults 18-49 at 9 p.m. Comparably, that trailed lead-in Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? (Viewers: #2: 5.04 million; A18-49: #1, 1.5/ 6 at 8 p.m.) by a significant 2.32 million viewers and 40 percent among adults 18-49. Also negative for Nashville was a loss of 430,000 viewers (2.93 to 2.50 million) and 10 percent among adults 18-49 (1.0/ 3 to 0.9/ 3) in the second half-hour. Tick, tock…the cancellation clock is ticking.

ABC finished first as a result of a two-hour repeat edition of America’s Funniest Home Videos (Viewers: #1, 5.60 million; A18-49: #1, 1.6/ 6 from 8-10 p.m.) and 20/20 (Viewers: #1: 6.58 million; A18-49: #1, 1.9/ 6 at 10 p.m.). Repeats of NBC’s 1 vs. 100 (Viewers: #3: 4.32 million; A18-49: #4t, 1.1/ 4), Las Vegas (Viewers: #3, 3.86 million; A18-49: #3: 1.1/ 4), and Law & Order: SVU (Viewers: #3, 4.75 million; A18-49: #2t, 1.3/ 4) were on par with typical non-original levels.

Elsewhere, CBS opened the evening with a half-hour Fall Preview (Viewers: #4, 4.10 million; A18-49: #4t, 1.0/ 4), followed by a repeat of Two and a Half Men (Viewers: #4, 4.12 million; A18-49: #4, 1.2/ 4), a repeat of Jericho (Viewers: #4, 3.17 million; #4t, 0.9/ 3), and a repeat of Numb3rs (Viewers: #2, 5.32 million; A18-49: #2t, 1.3/ 4). Friday Night Smackdown! on the CW finished second overall for the night in total viewers (4.31 million -- tied with NBC) and adults 18-49 (1.3/ 5).

I am so glad I picked Nashville as the first cancellation of the season! Props to 5th Grader though. I don't think its Friday debut was highly advertised and that has to be Fox's best Friday performance in a long time.

i doubt 5th grader will go longer than 2 seasons. i agree it did well for a FOX friday, but it's showing signs of slowly losing viewers

Yikes. I thought Nashville could hang around for a few weeks in the low-standards Friday spot, but not with those numbers.

Best episode of the night, by a long shot, was on Doctor Who. Brilliance. This is the first season I've watched of the 700+ episode Who franchise, so I don't have the historical context to say anything about how it compares to the rest of the series. But while I was only lukewarm about the first half of the season, these last three weeks have been stellar.

And I think CBS' fall preview did the best of the bunch. I wonder if that show is available online somewhere.

Maybe Nashville will become an ep of "Insomnia Theatre."

Seems that this type reality show is undergoing a pre-"Idol" shakedown. Most of'em are flopping. "Pussycat Dolls" would be a flop on any of the full-fledged nets, while "Nashville" mighta made it on CW. I doubt if either would have any more viewers on any net.

Did FOX actively hype "Nashville" during its summer shows (HK, Think You Can Dance, etc.)?

FOX seems to have a habit of greenlighting "reality" shows that tend to fit better on a niche cable channel than the main network (The Complex, The Casino, On The Lot, Nashville). I'm thinking Nashville MAY have had a chance (emphasis on "may") on Fox Reality, FX or CMT.

I had Nashville on my TV Dead Pool (as did the Mrs.), so we are both happy this afternoon Smiler

Instead of praising 5th Grader like some are, I'd be praising the amazing 1 VS 100. It literally gets 0 advertisements, and a RERUN of 1 VS 100 only lost to a new episode of 5th Grader by .3, and had the same share. That's pretty amazing and I wish it would send some sign to NBC, but it won't.

1 VS 100 starts taping again on Tuesday. They are taping nine episodes as of now.

1 vs. 100 is very underrated. I'm guessing the nine eps will be used to fill a midseason show, probably in some impossible timeslot where it will fail. Stupid NBC. Roll Eyes

I can't understand why NBC is not more optimistic about 1 vs. 100. It's a better game show than Deal or No Deal.

Two and a Half Men recieving more than 4 million shows that CBS could pull off a Friday.

Over the weeks that CBS has been airing Jericho at 8-and it recieving under 3 million-shows that people don't want to watch that. It also shows what sort of audiance is available for Fridays.

Maybe an hour of comedy encores of Friday or Saturday wouldn't do so bad for CBS.

Wow, Nashville did worse than I thought it would. Guess it's time for some House repeats.

I think an hour of family comedies would work Friday at 8 Ghost Whisper would move back an hour.

Serialized dramas repeat very poorly. Its no surprise Jericho has been doing poorly. Plus the timeslot has been changing almost weekly lately. It's in no way indicative that the show won't do well when it returns and replaces the soon to be 3 and out Cane.
