In my post above, I was referring to dramas only. CBS has tried Viva Laughlin, Cane, Moonlighting & Jericho to name but a few, but the only thing that has stuck are the procedurals. The procedural genre is definitely past its peak (it's hard to argue otherwise) and CBS knows that. That's why it's been trying different types of dramas, but to no avail.
As for Fox, 24 will still be a demo hit even if it loses audience, and The Simpsons continues to do well in demos. The point with Fox is that it has a balanced schedule; if viewer tastes turn away from procedurals, it's okay. If it turns against serials, it's okay. The net would be hit, but it's definitely not putting all of its eggs in one basket like CBS and ABC.

Fox does have the best mix. NBC is actually fairly split but when one hit is a comedy, one is a procedural, and one is a serialized show and that's all you have its a bad thing too. If NBC could just get some stability on its nights and stop just throwin stuff at the wall every third week, especially the reality and game shows, then they could probably be competitive demo wise.

CBS has Ghost Whisperer, which has been shaking off the procedural genre since late last season. If CBS continues and finds a good show to pair it with, maybe next falls Meant to Be's, then they would not have any problem breaking the mold. GW was a hit for them once and it can be again if given the right night, hype, and buzz like they did during Season 1.

Um...what would happen if viewer tastes turned away from American Idol?

Good question. Without AI FOX would be fourth without a problem

Fox would take a big hit for sure, but I don't think it would fall to fourth. NBC is so far behind the rest of the pack that it would likely settle into third. Fox's big problem used to be the fall, but it's not such a big problem anymore.

Ya I agree but Fox would still have at least the 3 it pulled in the fall when everything was in originals so I think it would still beat the peacock net.

I don't agree, beacause AI also helps a lot of other shows, including in the fall. Just think how bad would Till Deat would've done without the AI promotion, probably it would've been canceled
