What follows is the fast affiliate rating results for Monday, September 14 by network and by network per half-hour (in the order of ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox and The CW):

-Total Viewers:
NBC: 15.11 million, CBS: 5.86, ABC: 5.01, Fox: 4.95, CW: 2.56

-Adults 18-49:
NBC: 3.9 rating/10 share, CBS and Fox: 1.8/ 5, ABC: 1.5/ 4, CW: 1.3/ 3

----------

-Yesterday’s Winners:
America’s Got Talent (NBC), The Jay Leno Show (NBC)

-Yesterday’s Losers (excluding repeats):
One Tree Hill (CW), Gossip Girl (CW)

----------

-Ratings Breakdown:
Led by the debut of The Jay Leno Show, NBC opened the week on a winning note, beating the No. 2 network (CBS in total viewers; CBS and Fox among adults 18-49) by a whopping 9.25 million viewers and 117 percent among adults 18-49. The CW finished last in both categories despite airing the season-premieres of serials One Tree Hill and Gossip Girl, but the rankings were much better in target women.

After a summer of massive promotion and hype, NBC’s The Jay Leno Show was widely sampled, with 17.66 million viewers and a 5.1 rating/13 share among adults 18-49 in the Monday 10 p.m. hour. Comparably, Leno beat the competition combined (repeats of Two and a Half Men, The Big Bang Theory and CSI: Miami on CBS and the last hour of theatrical Dreamgirls on ABC) by a considerable 7.32 million viewers and 65 percent in the demo. Leno built from the 9:30 p.m. portion of lead-in America’s Got Talent (Viewers: 15.22 million; A18-49: 3.8/ 9) by 2.44 million viewers and 34 percent among adults 18-49. And The Jay Leno Show delivered NBC’s highest adult 18-49 rating in the Monday 10 p.m. time period since Nov. 3, 2008 (Saturday Night Live Presidential Bash), and biggest overall audience since the Summer Olympic Games in August 2008.

One year earlier, a Monday edition of Dateline averaged 4.30 million viewers and a 1.3/ 3 among adults 18-49, based on the final nationals.

Results for The Jay Leno Show are, of course, expected to decline as the week progresses. But, personally speaking, what did not work last night was too much packaged into one hour, an odd lack of energy and an uncomfortable flow of segments. While it was timely having Kanye West do a sit-down with Leno (before rapping with Rihanna and J-Z), what the nervous looking host failed to do was specifically ask Kanye why he did what he did to Taylor Swift one night earlier at the Video Music Awards. The opportunity was there, but he chose not to take it.

Earlier in the evening on NBC, a two-hour edition of America’s Got Talent averaged a winning 13.84 million viewers and a 3.3/ 9 among adults 18-49 from 8-10 p.m., with the half-hour breakdown as follows:

America’s Got Talent (NBC)
8:00 p.m. – Viewers: 11.82 million (#1), A18-49: 2.7/ 8 (#1)
8:30 p.m. – Viewers: 13.67 million (#1), A18-49: 3.3/ 9 (#1)
9:00 p.m. – Viewers: 14.65 million (#1), A18-49: 3.4/ 9 (#1)
9:30 p.m. – Viewers: 15.22 million (#1), A18-49: 3.8/ 9 (#1)

Results for second-place CBS are approximate due to the late start caused by the US Open Tennis primetime overrun. On that note, The US Open finished second in the 8 p.m. half-hour, with an estimated 4.1/ 7 in the overnights. Since more than one program shared a time period on CBS, here is the half-hour breakdown:

CBS/Monday
8:00 p.m.: US Open
Viewers: 6.19 million (#2), A18-49: 1.9/ 6 (#2)

8:30 p.m.: US Open / How I Met Your Mother (R)
Viewers: 4.73 million (#4), A18-49: 1.6/ 4 (#3)

9:00 p.m.: How I Met Your Mother (R)
Viewers: 5.95 million (#2), A18-49: 1.9/ 5 (#2)

9:30 p.m.: How I Met Your Mother (R) / Two and a Half Men (R)
Viewers: 6.21 million (#2), A18-49: 2.1/ 5 (#2)

10:00 p.m.: Two and a Half Men (R) / The Big Bang Theory (R)
Viewers: 6.83 million (#2), A18-49: 2.0/ 5 (#2)

10:30 p.m.: The Big Bang Theory (R) / CSI: Miami (R)
Viewers: 5.23 million (#2), A18-49: 1.6/ 4 (#2)

Over at ABC, the network premiere of theatrical Dreamgirls disappointed with just 5.01 million viewers (#3) and a 1.5/ 4 among adults 18-49 (#4) from 8-11 p.m. Here is the half-hour breakdown:

Movie: Dreamgirls (ABC)
8:00 p.m. – Viewers: 5.86 million (#3), A18-49: 1.5/ 4 (#4)
8:30 p.m. – Viewers: 5.25 million (#2), A18-49: 1.5/ 4 (#4)
9:00 p.m. – Viewers: 5.32 million (#3), A18-49: 1.5/ 4 (#4)
9:30 p.m. – Viewers: 5.00 million (#4), A18-49: 1.5/ 4 (#4)
10:00 p.m. – Viewers: 4.56 million (#3), A18-49: 1.4/ 3 (#3)
10:30 p.m. – Viewers: 4.06 million (#3), A18-49: 1.2/ 3 (#3)

In season-premiere news, The CW’s combination of One Tree Hill (Viewers: 2.59 million; A18-49: 1.2/ 3) and Gossip Girl (Viewers: 2.52 million; A18-49: 1.4/ 3) finished last in each of the four half-hours in both total viewers and adults 18-49. But the two dramas lifted The CW to dominance among women 18-34 (2.9/ 8) and females 12-34 (2.6/ 8) from 8-10 p.m., with Gossip Girl delivering its largest audience since Jan. 2009 and best ratings among women 18-34 (3.3/ 8), adults 18-34 (1.6/ 5) and women 18-49 (2.1/ 5) since Dec. 2008.

Fox capped off the evening with back-to-back repeats of House at an average 4.95 million viewers (#4) and a 1.8/ 5 among adults 18-49 (#2t).

Tough to read too much into any of these results, given the time shifts. But an offical "WOW" to NBC and Leno for those numbers. Obviously, Leno will decline, but impressive nonetheless.

Good start for Jay Leno, as expected. It is where it goes from here that is the unknown. However, I do think this show is going to better that expected.

CW can spin the female demos, but the season premieres of GG and OTH were both very disappointing. Neither could break 3 million. And it isn't going to get much better when the other networks debut their lineup. CW needs to broaden their development.

NBC had a great night. Both AGT and Leno did very well. We'll have to see how Leno holds up in the ratings.

Dreamgirls was just a burnoff on ABC.

Right on with your GG comment. I am so sick of that GG buzz machine that takes up all this time and space on the internet. It is a waste of time. No one watches. As you say, when the other networks debut next week those numbers are going down even further.

Great ratings for Leno and dissapointing for GG and OTH, I think Gossip Girl will survive by the skin of its teeth but OTH is likely to be gone by the end of the season.

IMO, Leno is not the future of television because as expensive as scripted shows are, they can be repeated and some repeats very well like NCIS plus syndication will mean a show will make money long after its cancelled and also it can be sold overseas.

Honestly not that impressed with Leno's numbers and based on the feedback from people who actually watched...well, most weren't all that impressed.

Comparing to Conan's opening episode: Jay had a great lead in, a better time slot, bigger guests and more promotion and didn't even double total viewers (not to mention having a demo # that, while it looks good on it's own, isn't all that impressive given the amount of promotion and above factors). It's a good number but I wouldn't call it a wild success, especially given that the best reviews I've heard called it "Ok."

Kicking off its 3rd season, GOSSIP GIRL delivered strong demos in its new 9pm time period, matched its year ago second season premiere with women 18-34 (3.3/8). GOSSIP GIRL improved considerably from where it ended last season, building 27% in women 18-34 and 33% in adults 18-34 versus its May average.

Gossip Girl scored its best women 18-34 (3.3/8), adults 18-34 (1.6/5) and women 18-49 (2.1/5) since Dec 2008. GOSSIP GIRL also posted its largest audience (2.5mil) since Jan 2009.

Competitively, GOSSIP GIRL won the 9pm time period among women 18-34 and women 12-34 (3.0/8). GOSSIP GIRL also ranked second in the hour among adults 18-34 (2.0/5)

I wonder if Leno could follow SNL's lead and do a DVD of the show's best comedy bits. There is a lot of correspondent work in the show. I'm sure the interviews wouldn't be included, but perhaps there's a market for that which NBC could take advantage of.

Great numbers for HBO but interesting that it didn't build in the finale. Perhaps TB has reached its plateau in potential audience.

I was also a little disappointed with how Jay handled Kanye. I expected a little more of a confrontation. I just caught Taylor Swift's appearance on 'The View'; her poise continues to impress me.
I wasn't that impressed with The Jay Leno Show myself, but I am with the ratings. Variety type shows can always expect some ups and downs depending on the guests, but he is certainly off to a great start. There is a part of me that would love to see Les Moonves squirm.

I don't know. in terms of 2009 numbers its pretty d*mn impressive. If it settles in at half what it did last night (8.8/2.6) 5 nights a week NBC'd have to be thrilled.
I do believe that with DVR being so popular right now, that the days of 20 million +/8.0 demos are basically gone.

There goes that GG buzz machine again. Let's see what GG gets next week when it goes up against some real competition in DWTS, Men/BBT, House and Heroes. Let's see how they spin the numbers then.

1. Glad comedy came back last night thanks to Leno and Colbert

2. Fantastic opening for Jay. I'm among those who rarely watches a 10pm drama (only CSIM to be fair) so of course Leno every night at 10pm make me very happy, and i'm sure there are many others. Can't see Leno going lower than 7-8 millions in a month. NBC might've hit the jackpot

3. Leno is probably the only comedian capable of doing good in prime-time so an eventual success for NBC doesn't mean the other networks will do the same. Can you imagine Kimmel at 10pm? Let's be serious

4. Pretty good demo numbers for OTH and GG. CW should be happy even though the viewing numbers don't look as good

5. Dreamgirls did better than i expected
