NBC had it last year as well, didn't they? Maybe it has something to do with USA Network being the primary channel for wrestling?

There is a report today that a new series has been greenlit by WWE called 'WWE Superstars', which is set to debut this coming April 2009 on WGN AMERICA, who of course, lost out in the bidding to MyNetworkTV for the 'Friday Night Smackdown' franchise.

I agree. The NBC WWE show definately pulled in typical WWE numbers. NBC probably wasn't expecting much more.

That's definately a reason for the lower ratings.

Interesting. I wonder if an additional wrestling show is going to oversaturate the market?

I don't know about anyone else but I've really enjoyed some of the recent acquisitions by WGN America. Boston Legal on the weekends, 7th Heaven every night, and Reno 911 in late night have all been fun to view. I'm assuming their repeats of Boston Legal are the same shown on local stations across the country during the weekend, but does anyone know if their Reno 911 repeats or even if their Scrubs repeats are the same that strip elsewhere across the country or does WGN have a separate deal ala Comedy Central?

Given how well WWE stuff still does via pay per view, I don't think it would hurt at all.

The trip from TV land to limbo

A roundup of TV series with fates unknown
By James Hibberd

Dec 21, 2008, 08:00 PM ET

Most TV shows exit the airwaves with a flurry of headlines memorializing their demise. Sometimes, though, a program fades from the spotlight into a scheduling twilight zone: neither declared dead nor returning.

Here's the lowdown on some missing-in-action titles from this year that most expected to see again but which have no airdates on the horizon:

NBC's "American Gladiators." Gladiators ready? No, gladiators are not ready. This competition-series revival enjoyed terrific ratings for its initial run during the WGA strike early this year. A second season launched in May and saw a sharp drop in viewers, with ratings fading throughout its summer run. Most consider reality shows cheap to produce, but this stunt-heavy arena competition is not. NBC has not mentioned "Gladiators" on the record, but it's considered canceled.

Fox's "The Moment of Truth." Another strike-era reality hit, this, too, saw a ratings decline during its summer run. Unlike "Gladiators," though, "Truth" isn't very expensive, and Fox has shot unaired episodes for a new season. Given the troubled economy and the show's controversial content, sources said garnering advertiser support hasn't been easy (another reason Fox hopes the cheerfully altruistic "Secret Millionaire" breaks out). No airdate is planned for "Truth," but with episodes in the can, a summer run might be tempting.

CBS' "EliteXC Saturday Night Fights." CBS planned four experimental off-brand specials and aired three, two of which performed well among younger demographics. With EliteXC declaring bankruptcy in October, though, the fourth special is not happening. CBS could align with another mixed-martial-arts partner but has not found or sought one. The network is doing fine with scripted shows, so it's in no rush to jump back in the octagon.

ABC's "Opportunity Knocks." This game show debuted in the fall and quickly was yanked from the schedule. ABC's insistence that the program might come back was presumed by the media to be spin to avoid cancellation so early in the season. But here we are, months later, and ABC still says "Opportunity" will knock again. The network plans to run off the remaining six episodes in the summer.

Fox's " 'Til Death" and ABC's "According to Jim." Both are modestly rated, critically indifferent sitcoms produced by their networks' sister studios that fill schedule holes when needed. "Death" is off the air, but a midseason appearance is likely. "Jim" will leave the air shortly, and ABC plans to air its remaining 12 episodes in the summer unless called into action earlier.

Modestly rated? That seems a little generous. If these two even have "modest" ratings, NBC's Thursday comedies are a frickin juggernaut. Big Grin

I could go even further, Shi, and post overnight ratings for any requested market (if available) for each of those daytime soaps... with the stipulation that you continue playing any of the forum's games, that is. Big Grin

Interesting articles. I don't think NBC will bring back American Gladiators. Ratings weren't that good in the summer. I do think FOX will bring back MOT in the summer because of its cheap cost of production. I would have brought back MOT Sundays at 7 PM. It'll do better than HITW. I only see ATJ and OK coming back in the summer if they have a weak summer slate and need to fill in holes. Same with TD, but it could come back and fill in on Fridays if the sci fi block bombs.

Probably because most WWE programming airs on NBC Universal. WWE Raw, the flagship program, airs on USA, as does the weekend AM Raw, and ECW on Sci-Fi.

As I remember, the deal includes special programming for NBC twice a year (which I assume the Tribute to the Troops was one of) and the Spanish-language Raw for Telemundo.

Plus, the Tribute for the Troops aired on Raw last year and wasn't a standalone special. (Raw airs on Mondays, and Christmas Eve fell on a Monday last year.)

I don't remember why Smackdown isn't part of the main TV programming contract. But it originally aired on UPN because at the time, most WWE programming aired on Viacom. As I remember, the deal ended badly, which is why many people speculated Smackdown got moved from Thursdays to Fridays (death slot) on UPN.
