-Ratings Breakdown:
NBC and Fox shared leadership on this improved Sunday, with The 59th Annual Prime-Time Emmy Awards leading Fox to victory in total viewers, and football-ignited NBC No. 1 among adults 18-49. The Emmy Awards averaged 12.89 million viewers and a 4.3 rating/11 share from 8-11 p.m., out of 8.09 million viewers (#2) and a 2.9/ 9 (#2) for Countdown to the Emmys from 7-8 p.m. Keep in mind that fast affiliate results for all live events are approximate. One year earlier, The 58th Annual Emmy Awards on NBC averaged 16.18 million viewers and a 5.2/13 among adults 18-49 Sunday, Aug. 27, 2006, based on the final nationals.

The San Diego vs. New England match-up on Sunday Night Football scored 12.93 million viewers and a 5.5/ 14 from 8-11 p.m., leading out of 7.10 million viewers (#3) and a 2.6/ 8 among adults 18-49 (#3) for pre-game Football Night in America at 7 p.m.

Elsewhere, CBS had a late start in prime-time on the East Coast due to a football overrun, and all results are approximate. Take a look:

CBS/Sunday
7:00 p.m. Football: Viewers - 15.25 million (#1), A18-49: 4.9/15 (#1)

The Emmys were really horrible last night. Will they stop giving Ryan Seacrest these emcee gigs. He is so annoyingly bad. I would rather listen to nails on a chalkboard than to have to endure having to not only look at, but also to listen to his smug ass. It never fails, Fox always puts on the worst Emmy shows of all the networks. Everything about it was awful from the "star trek" stage to the lighting and production values to the tacky tributes and did I mention the host.

3.5 million down for the Emmys...Football did hurt it bigtime.

and almost 8 million for the half-hour that BB had for itself? For a recap show????

and with all that stuff in the Friday thread about gameshows, this is a bit sad: Brett Somers of "Match Game" fame joined her old sparring partner Charles Nelson Reilly in the MG panel in the sky Saturday at 83, according to her website.

Even the football game seemed pretty low for such an impressive match-up. The game wasn't very close, but featured two of the leagues marque players. I have a feeling the networks are going to have slow start to the season. The weather has been so nice here in the East that it really doesn't feel like fall. As long as the weather holds, I think people will stay in summer mode.

Anyway, I'm psyched Terry O'Quinn finally won an Emmy for Lost, even though he deserves to win for lead actor--name a character more central than Locke.

James Spader didn't deserve his last two Emmys, and his perpetual place in the winner's circle is getting old. He and Sally Field both win for being formerly successful movie stars who deigned to go on television.

I think Kyra Sedgwick was by far the best in her category but to say that Sally Field won beacause she was a movie star is absurd. Have you watched her in Brothers and Sisters?

I couldn't be happier for James Spader winning again. He is truly deserving and I love how he can take what could easily be a caricature and turn it into a multi-dimensional and funny character.

Sally Field also has done such an awesome job on Brothers & Sisters and anyone who knocks it probably hasn't seen her performance.

Me too. I've watched Spader as Alan Shore since his first stint on "The Practice". He re-energized that show's final season and is a tour-de-force on "Boston Legal".

If you were a psychic and told me the Best Actor winner will come from a show that airs on Tuesday nights, I'd have easily said Hugh Laurie but of course, not many here are crying for Laurie not winning. But give it time - I'm sure he'll win down the road.

You have to remember that Emmy voters LOVE anything associated with David E. Kelley - just look at the Emmy winner history in the past 20 years and see the many Emmys awarded to people on those shows. I'm a fan of Kelley's work, especially the early seasons of "The Practice" and "Ally McBeal" but Emmy voters must idolize him even more. I mean, the biggest proofs of this Kelley-love: "Picket Fences" actually won Best Drama one year AND in another year, "The Practice" & "Ally McBeal" won Best Drama & Best Comedy (respectively) in the same year!

The final poll results for the first annual Lemon Awards are in! Check 'em out!

We've done a lot of TV bashing on this forum for quite awhile. Yes, it's fun and we'll do it again in the future but for now, it's time to be positive for a change with this forum's 6-week interactive poll entitled the World Series of Underrated Series.

If Sedgwick was the best, as you say, and given that she's far and away more central to The Closer (which is named after her character) than than Field is to hers (which is named after her character's children), and that Sedgwick's show is far more successful in the ratings, why WOULDN'T she win? Hmm? I'll tell you why.

Because she was never a big Oscar-winning movie star, and Field was. Period. They like her. They really like her. They robbed Kyra Sedgwick to prove how much they really like her. And Spader wins for the same reason--TV has a permanent inferiority complex when it comes to movies, no matter how many times they gloat about how TV is better now. Maybe so, but they still feel inferior. And as long as they rob the genuinely deserving so that the already more than adequately compensated can wave another statue around, they'll go on DESERVING to feel inferior.

Yes, pity the viewing public doesn't seem to feel the same way anymore. Big Grin

I suppose network muscle is another factor in some of these undeserved wins. TNT doesn't win a lot of Emmys. But Sedgwick did something amazing--she was virtually unknown for anything other than being married to Kevin Bacon before The Closer, and she became an overnight TV star. That's the kind of performance TV needs to reward. Hiring washed-up movie leads isn't going to accomplish much of anything, long-term. TV has to create its own stars. And honor them, when they arrive.

Ryan Seacrest wasn't that bad. I'll take him over Bryant Gumbel, who absolutely sucked at the Emmy hosting gig a few years back (and Gumbel's a native South Sider)

Congrats to 30 Rock, The Amazing Race (only CBS win), Terry O'Quinn, Late Night with Conan O'Brien (well deserved), Jaime Pressly (amazing how she's in such crappy movies and now she's an Emmy award winner), and James Spader (My great-grandmother knows his family very well and has met him several times. I want to.)

As for the show itself, I was actually thoroughly entertained. Seacrest wasn't the focus, and they gave that focus to real comedians and they were funny.
